Reasons Why Rosegarden is Canon: #012

Both character's solo arcs parallel off of each other's in many ways. One of the most notable is how Ruby and Oscar both struggle with themes around choice and identity. It's no wonder when their main allusions are Little Red Riding Hood and The Little Prince, respectively. And how both of their stories work as brilliant allegories for the trials and challenges of "growing up". How the people we meet, experiences we have, responsibilities, losses, and grief we carry all shape us as people. And how we don't often have a say in what will influence us or how.

For Oscar, he always knew he wanted to be more than a farmhand, but he never asked for the hand he was dealt. And now, at 15, he feels like the choice and opportunity to become the person he wants to be has been robbed from him. That his only fate is to become just another Oz in the long line of those that came before him.

Whereas Ruby always knew she wanted to be a huntress. A hero, like in the fairy tales her mom read to her. Ruby acts on these convictions, and she stumbles, fails, and loses more than she can bear. When she reaches her breaking point, she tries to throw herself away only to be offered the choice to become anyone she could possibly hope to be.

The parallels between their personal journeys, their shared attachment to one another (and the subsequent fear of loss), as well as how the merge and ascension are very clearly set up as mirrors, foreshadows and builds up to their arc in the coming season(s). Can't explain ascension with Oscar's leitmotif playing in the background and have Ruby undergo ascension after being shown an illusion of his death at her own hands, followed by him speaking to her at her grave about those very themes around identity and uh. Not address it. The Boy Who Fell From the Sky and the Girl Who Fell Through The World will have to face their reflections at some point. And a reunion after the latter returns from the other side of the looking glass is as opportune a time as any. So #greenlightvolume10 pls

Reason Why Rosegarden is Canon #008

In V6, there is an interesting series of events where Ruby mentions that food makes her feel better when she's upset, and we see Oscar overhearing this conversation.

A few episodes later, Oscar sees Ruby crestfallen at the conflict in their group in light of Ozpin's lies getting exposed, and so he stands up to try and mediate when Ruby has run out of things to say and looks defeated.

💡 Note: the framing of the fractured wall right behind Ruby's head to emphasize how she's feeling.

After the conflict escalates, Oscar disappears for some retail therapy but comes back while everyone is out looking for him and starts making dinner. When asked if something is cooking, he starts to say he did it to help people feel better after the earlier argument - specifically pausing to look at Ruby as he does so - before he deflects at the last minute.

So the tl;dr is Oscar heard Ruby say that food makes her feel better and the moment he saw she was upset, he went out to buy ingredients to make her a casserole to hopefully lift her spirits. But he didn't want to make it weird, so he DODGED THE QUESTION when asked why he did it.

All this after putting on new clothes that are essentially Remnant's equivalent of a marriage ritual. Boy is atrociously down bad and is as subtle as a brick through a glass window. 😔

Everyone’s willing to acknowledge Krillin is head over heels for 18, but I really feel like people strongly underestimate 18’s Krillin Thirst. No joke, that woman legit swoons over him, makes cream hearts in his coffee, punched a hole through a giant magical girl’s head for him…

So yesterday I met Aaron Dismuke at a con and he is legit the sweetest person ever he really liked my Ruby cosplay too. We talked Rosegarden, Oscar, the merge, he mentioned the Oscar protection squad and how we are doing a splendid job, Oscar’s trauma and much more. I also got both a photo and autograph. Anyway the main reason for this post is that he did a recording for me and I legit died. Btw this was all his idea ( I didn’t know what I wanted him to say).

Look, I love the little guy, but v5-v6 Oscar was sort of a loser and yet Ruby looked at him like:

There's no defending her, she's down bad and she doesn't even knows it.

i go kind of wild thinking about this panel because it's the first one that blatantly confirms the theory i've had for years that the rejection of fate is an ability both ichigo and orihime share and that, on a surface level ichigo's bankai is really confusing because it doesn't have an obvious "type" (water, ice, fire, etc, which is interesting when you realize engestu is a fire type but zangetsu....isn't) but on a thematic level it makes sense that fate is his domain considering ichigo has bounced back time and time again from situations he shouldn't have (death, the vasto lorde takeover, the loss of his powers and the old man's warning about it's permanence). it's not surprising for ichigo to possess this because, on a meta level, he's a protagonist in this genre and in this genre, protagonists always win, but i do think this remark is interesting because of how similar their powers are after all. they shape the world according to their own makings, their whole shtick is to make the impossible possible with his bankai and her rejection of events, which is why the irony hits so good when you realize they're both the most human among the entire main cast. who stood in an enemy's shoes and grieved for them? who has repeatedly emphasized this need to protect people that stems from childhood grief and trauma? who settled down in a small town with a job in an area they're passionate about? both of them. they're deeply powerful – almost godlike – but their goals, their dreams, the thing that drives them is almost always deeply human.
