Fair Game Parallels

Since there’s still debate over whether Clover and Qrow were meant to be romantically-coded, I’ve decided to make a list of the times that Fair Game paralleled either a) scenes that the fandom largely considers flirt or romantic-coded, or b) scenes between pairings that are either romantic in-canon or heavily implied. Note that this doesn’t cover every interaction in detail, since it’s focused on the parallels specifically.

In animation, every small detail matters. Someone chose to include that expression, to have the character make that gesture, or to frame a show in a certain way. CRWBY is aware of this. We’ve even heard about some of the small changes they made to scenes this volume to ensure the proper tone came across. So, for this analysis, all of those small details are, no pun intended, fair game.

Another thing I’d like to note is that Winter apparently got hurt enough by Cinder to bleed and get damaged, but we like. Don’t see her wound bleeding out or anything at all. You don’t even see where the cut was.

I know she didn’t get killed ,but I think it adds to the brutality of Clover’s death. We saw him get gored. We saw the blood. The bleeding wound. We saw his life fade away.

But every other death and injury before it wasn’t nearly as gory. The worst we saw was A. Yang’s arm get cut off, and it was stylized with little/no blood.and B. The random dude who was a faunus bigot get killed in Adam’s short. where we still didn’t see the injury, and it wasn’t a character important enough to care about and didn’t have any ties to any characters.

Winter got injured enough to show blood but I couldn’t even see where she had gotten cut. Clover, a man who was queer coded and was only important to Qrow gets brutally murdered by Qrow’s own weapon and wrongdoing in one of the least satisfying ways possible. (as if it would’ve been satisfying to begin with) and we literally watch him die.

Hey remember when Miles Luna said he regretted not keeping the pilot from V5 gay because he ended up being popular, despite the fact that he would have died anyway? I guess we know why Clover died now, he was still itching to kill off a popular gay character.

So many people said they didn't care about Clover (and I was like: how can you not? but well). So clearly, Clover did not have enough screen time for people to get attached to him. Literally all his scenes were interaction and FLIRTING with Qrow. So the only people who would be impacted by his death would be fairgame shippers. Either the writers made him die for NOTHING, or it was to shock fairgame shippers only, period. And then people say we're overreacting and imagining things. Yeah sure.

The fact that Robyn doesn’t draw that bolt back until this moment–the fact that it’s done pointedly and in the foreground–is significant.

What happens to prompt this?

Clover verbally confirms that he’s going to arrest Qrow.

Up until that point–yes, he’s acting weird and she’s scared and deeply angry. They just got a terrifying cut-off panicked warning that Ironwood is abandoning Mantle to die, having just hours earlier declared his intent to stand with them. But he hasn’t, technically, done anything yet.

(And from her perspective…Isn’t it terribly convenient, how Ironwood sent Robyn down there first? How she’s currently in an enclosed space–the worst possible environment for a ranged fighter who works from a distance against a physically stronger opponent–with the leader of the AceOps. How this betrayal happened mere minutes after confirming that the job he needed her cooperation for–capturing Tyrian Callows, after calming the impending riots in Mantle–was complete?)

(Isn’t it terribly convenient how he avoided using her Semblance for anything but confirming the Salem story, rather than explicitly swearing to Mantle’s safety?)

(From her perspective, none of that even matters. The point is that Ironwood’s lost his mind and is going to leave her people down there, and he’s seized absolute power and is arresting anyone who might disobey or interfere with those orders. There are thousands of lives at stake. She has to act, and it has to be now.)

So of course she pointedly brings up her weapon and sticks it in Clover’s face–but as this moment highlights? That was just to make a point.

It–visibly–wasn’t fucking loaded yet.

She was giving him a chance to show his true colors. Because up until this moment, Clover hadn’t actually confirmed whether or not he intended to obey these patently cruel orders. He’d just carefully, kindly informed Qrow that he’d received them. He hadn’t acted on them yet.

Robyn, despite her palpable fear and fury, did not react wildly or out of uncontrolled emotion, and she did not escalate the situation out of control. She waited and listened and gave Clover every opportunity to see reason.

When he showed what side he was on (“After everything we’ve been through tonight, please don’t make me arrest you too,” both making an ill-informed attempt at emotional manipulation by trying to sway her loyalties despite everything he’s been complicit in, all the harm he’s enabled against Mantle, and confirming that he is very much about to arrest Qrow despite the circumstances), she reacted appropriately.

But she waited for that confirmation, and I’m getting a little sick of people implying otherwise.

tfw when you're really happy and excited to finally (finally!!) get some good ol' mlm representation because homophobia is still alive and well in media representation among animated shows particularly for mlm pairings and you "read too much into" blatant flirtations and get your hopes up only for the cute Irish dude you ship your favorite character with to get brutally murdered in the second to last episode of the season 🙃😂 and you don't even know who to be mad at because the animation industry is a shit show run by a conglomerate of motherfuckers who don't want to deal with any potential "backslash" from mlm pairings being made explicitly canon 🙃😂😂😐

There is a difference between expressing justified anger and harassment and some of y'all need to learn that.

I have seen nothing from the Fair Gamers, the mlm community, or anyone else hurt by yesterday's events that comes off as even remotely inappropriate or hateful, and honestly? With as much as this hurts, that says an awful lot our corner of the fandom. If there are any people put there sending honest-to-God hate/threats/harassment to CRWBY, please stop. I know you're pissed and you have every right to voice that anger, but hate closes down lines of communication that we desperately need open if we're ever going to get an explanation or an apology for this absolute bullshit (not that either will undo any of this but we deserve at least that much).

As for the rest of you coming at us with your lectures... kindly and respectfully back the fuck off. We're pissed and we will continue to voice that anger and make our pain known until we feel we've been heard. As long as that anger is appropriately displayed, it has absolutely nothing to do with you and you have no place telling us to sit down and shut up. Most of us have been doing that our entire lives when it comes to this. No more.

They chose to make a character. They chose to make him male. They chose to make him have heavy mlm subtext. And they chose to kill him off so Qrow could be sad again.
