Earnest query for the RWDE: Why do you keep coming back to RWBY?
Look, I’m not entering this tag to change anyone’s minds if I can help it and I’m not going to be upset if you somehow dislike things about RWBY that I do.
But many times when I get more than a few… intense rebuttals to my takes, I often find myself curious and semi-quoting Simmons: “Do y’all ever wonder why you’re here?”
Like… when it comes to series that I like at first but later don’t do it for me, I usually step back if I can help it or if it’s still ongoing. Even when I was obsessed but later not, I’ve often stepped away when it doesn’t spark joy.
Yet I often find certain RWDE posters that I catch hands from with very verbose posts I curiously find going back to Volume 2 or 4 even. Yet despite the anger, many seem to keep coming back to RWBY.
Why is that? What compels someone to keep watching a show that seemingly gives them one proverbial migraine after another? I might get bend out of shape myself but (to use a metaphor) if a food was constantly giving my stomach pains, I’d stop eating.
I repeat, this is not meant to be antagonistic.

I think Yang is an amazing sister, personally. Despite what others have said. Of course everyone is allowed to have their own opinions. I just don’t think calling her relationship with ruby “toxic” is accurate based on volume 9. In fact, I think it reflects the complexities of sibling dynamics quite accurately, based on my own experiences.
I’m not saying she definitively is or isn’t a good sister, because that’s something purely up to interpretation and can’t be quantified objectively, I’m just giving my own thoughts.

The lack of an onscreen gay male character in RWBY is genuinely inexcusable btw. As a gay man, I can’t believe that a good chunk of this fanbase I’m apart of is genuinely against seeing me represented in the show becuase it would “overshadow” their beloved F/F ships. Please remember that this “female-lead” show you’re obsessed with is written by two straight guys.

Honestly if Robyn hill was Salem spy a change I would have done is reveal the crimes team RWBY and team jnr before I die (like spider far from home) to cause distrust to the world.
Crimes listed:
-Yang and Blake revealingly government information (who will ever trust them after that?)
-Argus incident (how they allow a city to be defenseless against the Grimm.
Bonus: a discord member gave a scenario where Jaune finds out that his sister family died because of that plan in volume 6. Grimm swarm and wiped it out)
-Weiss pointing his sword at his brother. To really messed with the public have Robyn tampered with Weiss’s weapon tricking the world that she is a psychopath)
-highway battle in the beginning volumes to show how destructive team RWBY can be etc
When it is all over, even if the kingdom survives, no one will ever trust this team, especially Yang and Blake. (considering how awful their personality is in the newer volumes it’s all but guaranteed Yang will make things worse.)
Ooh, interesting. :)
Assuming that RWBY/JNR’s constant “evading the consequences of their actions, lucking out and being hero-worshipped for things they didn’t do or relied massively on others for” aura on Remnant gets turned off or runs out here, this could get RWBY/JNR permanently distrusted, turned into global fugitives or thrown in jail.
And even if their aforementioned "we're the protagonists" luck-charm is still on, this could still cause them setbacks - particularly framing Weiss for blasting Whitley, with released footage.
(Also, Whitley if I remember correctly is a civilian who doesn’t have his aura unlocked – so an explosion like that could seriously hospitalise him or even kill him.)
Ooh, I like that idea of Jaune’s family in Argus dying to the Grimm due to it being left defenceless after the events of Volume 6 – that could drive Jaune away from Team RWBY altogether if he blames them more than himself for leaving Argus defenceless. It kinda reminds me of the spoiler-y state of Mistral-era Team JNR in Calxiyn's Can One Change Fix All of RWBY? scenario on Youtube.
And yeah, Atlas-era Yang definitely won't do anything to help mend burned bridges, even if some of the others do try.

I hope we get to find out Taiyang's semblance at some point.
I got reminded of all the discourse around how he talked to Yang during her recovery in Volume 4, and while on actually revisiting those scenes I do think a lot of it is kinda overblown, I can still kinda agree with the complaint that like, his dismissal of her Semblance as "a giant temper-tantrum" doesn't entirely sit right, given how they're tied to the soul. I don't think it's an entirely unfair assessment, at least of how she used it in the Beacon volumes, but it still does come off as pretty uncharitable.
But then it occurred to me that of Team STRQ's members, we only know half of their semblances; the Branwen twins. And uh. One of them is literally constant bad luck forever all the time, and the other is the portal connection power held by the least likely woman on the planet to make frequent use of it. So if Taiyang's own semblance, or Summer's for that matter, is similarly incredibly unhelpful or seems weirdly disconnected from the person who has it, maybe that could reframe the scene a little bit. Is Taiyang thinking of a semblance as a manifestation of the soul and thereby casting indirect judgement on Yang's personal character? Or is he thinking of it along similar lines as Qrow thinks of his, and not really ascribing the same meaning to it that we know to do so, when he's making a point about the drawbacks of Yang's?

So apparently some people don't get the appeal of Rosegarden or even think it is creepy? Allow me.
It can be summarized as a tragic romance where one character is doomed by the narrative. I'll compare it to Fakiru (Ahiru/Fakir from Princess Tutu.) Spoiler warning.
Tumblr media
Ahiru is doomed by the narrative because she is actually just a duck, not a human girl, who is fated by the story to lose to Rue. By the end of the story her role is to disappear and return to being a duck. (In PTT the characters are trapped in a story that was written by a now-dead writer, which has become reality. So "doomed by the narrative" is meant in a very literal sense.) That is similar to Oscar's plight. He is designed by the narrative to disappear as Ozma takes over his body.
It really is that simple. It's a cinnamon roll squared ship with an inherently tragic element. Oscar is stated by canon to have a crush on Ruby, similar to how his inspiration character (The Little Prince) falls in love with a rose. However, he is in the process of merging, essentially dying so Ozma can take his body and live. Oscar is written to be a sacrifice the same way Ahiru is.
It is really strange that people's first thought is that RG means Ozpin/Ozma in Oscar's body being in a relationship with Ruby. To get to that conclusion you really have to be coming in with a bad faith argument. Ozpin/Ruby is an entirely different ship.
🤷‍♀️ Stop misrepresenting it. In the same way Fakiru does not mean anyone wants Fakir to literally have adult time with a literal duck, RG does not mean anyone ships Ruby with an immortal wizard who is thousands of years old.

The hypocritical Woobification of Raven Branwen
I dont think it is a secret to anyone who has followed any RWBY discourse, that female characters are treated VERY differently from male ones in the wider fandom, especially in regards to the morality of their actions. I dare anyone who wishes to enter the words like "Raven" "Ironwood" "Adam" "Cinder: and the like into the search bar of websites like twitter and even Reddit to some extent. What you will find more often than not, besides fan-art and porn are discussions about these characters.
After browsing through these discussions one can quickly notice a pattern. Ironwood and Adam are either demonized or have complicated discussions surrounding them. While characters like Raven and Cinder, while having their detractors mostly have discussions focused on shipping or on justifying/excusing their actions.
Raven Branwen is of course, the most iconic example of this.
Raven Branwen in Canon
In the canon of RWBY, Raven Branwen and her brother Qrow both hail from a bandit tribe. They were sent to Beacon to learn how to kill hunters where they learn the values of family and friendship, with team STRQ becoming close. Raven even marries Tai, her teammate and has a kid with him, then ditches him with the child and leaves Summer to come into the picture while Qrow remains an eternal bachelor.
It is revealed to us that Ozpins tendency to keep secrets is what lead Raven to losing trust and leaving the side of good. That, and feat of Salem who she knows is immortal and thus cannot be killed directly.
She returns to her bandit tribe and becomes a bandit queen, killing entire villages for loot and plunder. One of which we can see in the show.
Her becoming a bandit is not something that was thrust upon her, she was not forced to do it or anything of the sort. She chose to do it under her own volition.
Her only "redeeming" point is not being allied to Salem and having a "I will save you once" rule with those she knows and nothing more.
And yet...
Raven Branwen in Fanon
If we were to follow the most common discussions of Fanon then Raven is a tragic lesbian who could never be with Summer, a mother who understood her limits and wanted her daughter to have a better life than with her and who was forced into the position of providing for her tribe and had absolutely no choice but to raid villages for survival of her poor tribe.
If people arent thirsting over Raven herself and or her "romance" with Summer then one can always find many excuses and people calling her a "tragic" and "understandable" figure. They will say that "Shes not perfect" and things like that when in reality, Raven Branwen is just a straight up evil person in the story. Complicated? Yes. Evil? Also yes.
Her only saving grace is that most of the time she is not an antagonist. And she is not related to Salem and in fact would oppose her if she wasnt a coward. And yet, her actions, her being a literal murderous bandit seem to be ignored by a lot of the fandom.
The same fandom that will give shit to Ironwood for bringing 3 airships to Vale and calling it a "military occupation" and Adam wanting to blow up a train (with its crew) will then turn around and pretend that Raven killing innocent villages for shits and giggles on her own volition never happened.
They will cry about how Ironwood and Adam never deserved redemption! How they are deeply evil and have always been deeply evil people, while convincing everyone that Raven is perfect for redemption and was just "forced" to be a bandit queen.
The hypocricy of the RWBY FNDM is staggering, but not news.
What is worse however is how Raven is seemingly receiving the same if not even faster way of redemption that Emerald has. By now most people have probably seen both the RWBY:Beyond first episode and of course the ending animatic. And who else is there in Vacuo if not Raven. Shes just there. Like she just belongs amongst the heroes despite being a literal BANDIT QUEEN.
Despite Ironwood and Adam turning evil they had a good cause at the end of the day. A cause they wanted to fight for.
And instead the people praise and want the redeption of a terrorist who worked for Salem and a literal bandit queen, both of whom did the things they did out of selfish needs? Seriously?
Whats worse is that it seems that CRWBY is more than okay with that. It seems that this is at least currently one of their goals. Which to me is just staggering.
Conclussion i guess
Sorry for the ranty nature of this post. I know that im preaching to the choir but i just needed to get this out of my chest after seeing 10000000000000 posts about Raven and Summer fucking on twitter. Because yeah, THATS Ravens most identifying feature, being a girlkisser. After fucking years of being called a fascist and a bootliker for simply saying that Ironwoods heel turn was shittily done and that SOME of his plans were good it fucking maddens me to see people simp for a literal BANDIT QUEEN without push-back.

A few comments on a recent post about RWBY I made got me thinking about something. Basically, I think that Rooster Teeth – and possibly by extension its parent companies – have artificially inflated RWBY as a media project and franchise rather than letting it grow organically. Therefore, it became a bubble that was bound to burst at some point. RWBY might never have been a profitable IP, which might be very relevant for its future.
This is not a problem that arose after Monty Oum‘s passing, I feel like this was already coming before that. Shane Newville‘s open letter (which absolutely comes from an emotional, mentally unwell state of mind, but has had many of its contents confirmed over the years, even beyond being one of the first descriptions of the toxic work environment at Rooster Teeth) makes a few points that support this impression. Whether you agree with the letter or not, you cannot deny that the first two volumes of RWBY, while they also had merch accompanying them and stuff, were not produced following industry standards – starting with the 3D software used, Poser Pro (Monty Oum‘s preferred tool for animation). This led to some really creative animation work that, while not always high-quality by industry-standards, was certainly pushing boundaries. It was creative and it worked for what RWBY was: a passion project created by someone who saw animation as his strongest suit – as his preferred medium to tell a story. I‘ve seen a lot of people claim that Monty Oum wasn‘t a writer, and while that‘s true, I feel like the implication of that statement is always that he couldn‘t tell stories on his own. I don‘t think that‘s true. I think Monty Oum was a great storyteller when it came to expressing certain things through animated action scenes. It‘s just that he wanted to tell a story that included more than just that and a few lines of dialogue – which is where Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross come in, two at the time very inexperienced writers (who possibly had a fallout with Monty Oum over creative differences later), as well as some talented folks – people like Shane Newville. They were chosen to work on this because Monty Oum acknowledged their potential and liked to work with them, and I feel like that created an environment where they were really allowed to flourish. Volumes 1 and 2 are certainly not flawless, but I feel like I can tell the people making it had fun.
To Rooster Teeth however? I think RWBY (and by extension, Monty Oum as a creator) might have been little more than assets to them. RWBY was first created around a time when RT first tried to be more like, well, an actual company. At least from 2014 onward, but possibly even earlier than that, this included an effort to conform to industry standards more, mostly in order to be able to hire more people – very visibly so in RWBY in the form of the switch to Maya (my opinion about that is, the way they did it didn’t do RWBY any favors at all). I think they saw RWBY and Monty Oum as an opportunity to appear… More important, bigger, than they ever really were.
So what did they do? Again, I kind of have the feeling that they “upscaled” RWBY to a size where it appears like this big thing, but it became far too much to handle. Essentially, they created a mock giant, or a metaphorical quasi-star: something that can appear big from afar, but is actually very small / unstable (and if we go with the quasi-star metaphor, disturbs all of its surroundings). This is what I mean when I say that RWBY was a bubble bound to burst, because no star lives forever – and quasi-stars can only exist under very specific, very unstable conditions (I linked a Kurzgesagt-video in case you’re interested what exactly a quasi-star / black hole star is / was, cosmology is so fascinating IMO). Once these conditions exist no longer, they both fall apart and collapse into the black hole that is their core at the same time.
My main argument for this is that RWBY was essentially a huge money sink for RT (Source: Barbara Dunkelman’s unprofessionalism). They pumped so much money into this… Perhaps even more than they ever made from it. While this isn’t 100% confirmed, it is very much possible (and IMO not exactly unlikely) that RWBY was never profitable — which it might have been if RT hadn’t been so hellbent on creating the illusion of a multi-million-dollar franchise.
This is purely speculative, but this might also be why Volume 10 was never greenlit. We know that Volume 9 was to a significant part funded by Crunchyroll and in fact would not have been possible without them (probably because RT was already out of money at this point). They might have bought into this mock giant, then realized they had pretty much been scammed once Volume 9 aired. This might have led to Crunchyroll’s unwillingness to fund another season for something they knew now was effectively a money sink. Since RT at this point lacked the funds to produce Volume 10 alone and therefore was dependent on investors like Crunchyroll and Warner Brothers… Volume 10 was never greenlit, no matter how hard they attempted to get their fans’ hopes up and start a hashtag campaign on social media (as far as I remember, that was started by Rooster Teeth, not the fans. I don’t have my Twitter account anymore though, so I can’t check). Again though, this is speculation.
The worst part? This refusal of RT to just… Downscale RWBY again, this determination that it had to be this huge franchise… Was all put on the backs of the creatives working on it. We know at this point, from multiple sources, that RWBY and other RT productions have had an incredible amount of crunchtime, working overtime, employee abuse, … going on behind the scenes, which seems to only have gotten worse after Monty Oum’s passing. At the end of the day, all RT does and has ever done is blame others for their incompetence. Like, no shit, I’ve seen fans claim that it’s the FNDM’s job to “keep the show alive” (particularly in the light of #GreenlightVolume10), which… No, that’s not the fans’ job. It’s the job of the company who has been entrusted with this beloved IP, and said company has proven to be utterly incompetent on multiple occasions, which is unfortunate, but a sad reality for all those who love RWBY. And while Rooster Teeth has never directly said such a thing, they have certainly implied it and taken advantage of the existing sentiment within their fanbase, as well as their parasocial relationship with it (again, see #GreenlightVolume10 for reference).
To clarify, I’m not saying none of this would have happened if RT didn’t insist on making RWBY this big franchise (and biting off far more than they could chew in the process) – again, RT was far too notoriously incompetent at everything a company should manage – but I do think it might have played a role. It also isn’t an excuse for all the employee abuse. Again, what they should have done is downsizing the project, not inflating it further and further.
If I’m not somehow completely in the wrong (because IMO this just makes way too much sense to not be at least partially true – but let’s face it, a lot of this is just me connecting dots, and there is always a chance I’m connecting them wrong, even though I don‘t think so), then it kinda blows my mind that there are still people who believe in this scam. Though I will say, emotional attachment can do that to anyone. If anything, I’m honestly sorry that those folks lose something that means so much to them, and that false promises were made to them.
At the end of the day, the story of RWBY (the “franchise”) is twofold. It’s a story about an incredibly talented creator who passed away far too early, who was given the incredible opportunity to make his dream come true. It’s a story of people he trusted taking up his torch, and maybe getting lost in the dark along the way. It’s an inspiring story regardless, and I hope to see it continued at a downsized scale so it can grow organically, preferably in the hands of an indie animation studio like Dillon Goo (🤞)
But it is also a cautionary tale to both creatives and companies who employ them, a tale about false promises, abuse of both employees and fans, as well as how to not run a project. Don’t blow your thing out of proportion too early, don’t create a mock giant / metaphorical quasi-star. Let your ideas and projects grow and flourish organically and sincerely.

That disgusting Critter just made a new hate video about how RWBY fails at using its cast. Of course an idiot like her would say that. Not every single character in a show matters. And of course she says that a racist like Cardin should get more screen time in the show.
There is a word people have for somebody like her.
The Female version of Hero Hei.
But anyone who says that Cardin should get more screentime , or god forbid Adam? That's a red flag.
Why the hell do people keep insisting on shipping cardinxvelvet or wanting cardin and velvet on the same team?
And here I thought Tauradonna fans were sick in the head.
Here
youtube
Here's a counter-video, a video explaining how RWBY actually uses its characters well.

Not Tumblr recommending me another "this is why that one time Yang showed interest in men doesn't count and she's totally a lesbian" post 😩
God, is this fucking fandom just allergic to the idea that a person can be attracted to more than one gender? I've seen people calling Blake a lesbian too despite her having been explicitly said multiple times to be bisexual.
I swear to god, I've lost track of the amount of times I've seen "comphet" used as an argument against the possibility of a character being bi. It's honestly infuriating.

(saw your confession on rwby confess) i think the current problem with critics and fans is that *both* sides that go to war (NOT the critics and fans who are minding their business and only occasionally engage, shoutout to them, i love you all) either made their side their whole personality and/or they're actively trying to one-up/destroy the other. you can't post anything without them NOT reading, rather already crafting a response in their mind to counter your point, even if they didn't even read what your point is. it's a really uncomfortable situation because anything you do will put you in this or either side and you cannot get the whole fan experience. i've honestly been afraid of posting knightshade not because i dislike bees (I'm rather indifferent to them) but because i'm afraid of people thinking i hate bees and that it's cheating art and the whole nine yards (saw it happen to many blacksun, dragonslayer and knightshade art). i made ONE joke and people already painted me as a critic and a hater. ONE.
also, while some critics bring very valid points and give excellent food for thought, the majority that goes into forums and twitter usually repeat the same points that have been analysed to death. like, in reality there's always something new to criticize about rwby, but no, in forums it's always the same stuff. it feels like they're fishing for praise or engagement instead of actually posting their thoughts.
anyways good luck with everything
... *Inhale*
FUCKIN YES! THANK YOU!
Finally a anonymous ask that isn't someone being a prick but also engaging with me! You have no idea how happy I am.
Outside of that. THANK YOU, you finally put into words how frustrating this community can be. Like I love this fandom but God damn does it make me wanna pull my hair out.
And it sucks even further since neither side are complete pieces of SHIT! It's just some choose to be the fuckin worst or reiterate on points that don't work! Its just utterly frustrating because I just wanna talk about Rwby and how I view this series but instead you gotta pick a fuckin side because this fandom chooses to act like fuckin toddlers!
I'd like to make a thread out of this but I wanna make it natural. But regardless. THANK YOU!

I think a lot of people tend to get wrapped up in the arguments of "Rwby good" and "rwby bad" but honestly I think generally most of the time those people no matter the side hold some love for the show, they just don't have many ways of showing it.
Now there are people who do genuinely hate the show but most of the folks I've seen in the Rwby Fndm on both sides share a similar sentiment. "I love this show".
Though I might be misunderstanding so if I am I do apologize.

Team RWBY post fall of Atlas arrive to Beacon Era RWBY and try their shit against past RWBY. Past RWBY seeing what they had become need to stop their future selves. What will be the end result? What will the interaction be before and after they become enemies?
Ooh hoo! :3 :3
At first, maybe both the Beacon and Post-Atlas Team RWBY's will get along and see each-other as allies, as both sides will (quite arroganty) figure, "who better to trust than ourselves." PA!RWBY might also convince B!RWBY at first that they can't trust Beacon!Ozpin to do what's right and that B!RWBY shouldn't put much faith in him. Beacon!Blake would probably be the most distraught at hearing this given her trust issues, Beacon!Weiss on the other hand would be the most reluctant to believe an important authority figure of theirs can't be trusted, and Beacon!Ruby+Yang would be in the middle. But PA!RWBY telling Beacon!RWBY about Lionheart's treachery under Ozpin's nose, the extent of Ozpin's secret-keeping and that future!Ironwood snapped and turned on everyone (of course leaving out the role that PA!RWBY themselves played in that whole damned mess in the first place), coupled with Beacon!Team's instinctive repulsion to authority in general, would push Beacon!RWBY to all slide over to Post-Atlas!RWBY's side, at first.
This cooperation between the two Team RWBY's wouldn't last indefinitely, as it becomes increasingly clear how different the two Team RWBY's are and how much worse PA!RWBY are than Beacon!RWBY in certain areas. Some individual interactions between each Team RWBY members:
Beacon!Ruby, after hostilities have broken out, would probably call out PA!Ruby that she lost sight of honouring Summer's memory and of one of the most important duties of being a huntress (protecting those who can't protect themselves) in favour of living out PA!Ruby's own self-centred hero fantasy at far more expense than benefit to others.
PA!Weiss would, pre-hostilities, probably have a bit of an annoyed and exasperated "I hate past me" annoyed reaction to Beacon!Weiss, and Beacon!Weiss's indignant initial responses to that would probably make Beacon!Weiss seem even more immature compared to PA!Weiss's relatively put-together and calm demeanour. Until Beacon!Weiss finds out about how PA!Weiss helped her teammates destroy Atlas-Mantle and impoverish everyone including their family in the future timeline.
Beacon!Blake, before the two Team RWBY's fall out, would probably be very ambivalent when she realises PA!Blake no longer thinks about doing anything for Faunus in the future, which later turns to disgust. Post-hostilities, Beacon!Blake would kick PA!Blake's ass in a 1v1 because PA!Blake doesn't have her blonde codependent to back her up, and Beacon!Blake would probably deliver a post-fight one-liner about how she (Beacon!Blake), for all her own faults and internal struggles, is a much stronger and braver person than whatever PA!Blake has let herself devolve into since the Beacon time.
Beacon!Yang pre-hostilities would probably at first be a bit disturbed by how much colder and less cheerful PA!Yang as her future self is, in part due to her missing arm. Beacon!Yang gets more and more appalled by PA!Yang as relations between the two Teams are breaking down, and Beacon!Yang takes a lot of issue with seeing an older version of her be so callous to Ruby's needs. Personally, I just like to think Beacon!Yang does this at some point when PA!Yang endangers, neglects or disregards one of the Ruby's badly enough:
[Beacon!Yang punches PA!Yang square in the face while PA!Yang is off-guard, throwing her back and sending spittle flying out of her open mouth.]
Beacon!Yang: THAT'S [YOUR/OUR/MY] SISTER, YOU BITCH!!!
Beacon!RWBY probably wouldn't beat PA!RWBY on their own (though they might try it when they first find out, only to get their asses handed to them in Round 1). After that failed first fight, Beacon!RWBY, already "Future Me Scares Me" shaken by PA!RWBY's Knight Templar-ness, would probably take the Round 1 outcome as the reality check it is, leading to positive character growth for them. Having the Ozpinati and their resources plus Beacon!Team JNPR backing Team RWBY up the next time would probably help turn the tide against PA!RWBY once and for all.
As for what happens when PA!RWBY are defeated, Beacon!RWBY at first would probably just be content to kick PA!RWBY's asses back to their own timeline, but the Ozpinati - especially Ironwood, with Ozpin agreeing with his logic - would probably want to instead detain PA!RWBY so they can ply them for information about the future timeline with which to counteract and head off Team Salem in the Beacon timeline. Though PA!RWBY, even defeated, might be just cunning and slippery enough to retreat underground and set about either getting themselves home or about still trying to "beat" Beacon!RWBY And Co. so they can "save the past" themselves.

Not to start any discourse, but I'm still left utterly aggravated by the school of thought that "X character did bad things means they cannot have been right about anything and there is nothing of value to be learned from them." It is not an uncommon writing tactic to use villains to put mirrors up to the flaws of our heroes or the systems they work in (and by extension similar flaws of IRL systems) that nobody else would be suited to pointing out. But this crowd willfully ignores that, because they have a similar mindset as Steven Universe discoursers. TBH I'd be surprised if there isn't some overlap.
