Family Dinner ~ @EvieAlexander_ @AvaWilke @Phin_Alexander
Evie: I looked at my phone and sighed before I picked it up. I wasn’t sure how Phin was going to react to me inviting him to dinner. We were back on speaking terms, but it wasn’t anywhere like it used to be with us. I looked at the picture of Kayden and smiled. I couldn’t help but hope Phin and I got close again. Kayden deserved to be surrounded by the family he had left. I scrolled through my contacts and clicked on Phin’s name, taking a deep breath as the phone rang.
------------------
Phin: I set the papers I was looking over to the side when I heard my phone ring. I was shocked when I picked it up and saw my sister’s name. It was unusual for her to call out of nowhere. I quickly thought something must be wrong and answered it. “Evie? Are you okay? Is Kayden alright?” I was relieved when I heard her laugh quietly, “Are things still that...rough...with us that I can’t call without something being wrong?” I relaxed a little, “Not at all. It’s just...not normal?” I could hear her sigh, “I know. I’m sorry. I was actually calling to see if you would like to join us for dinner? Kayden and I would be so happy to see you. Daniel too, I’d really like for y’all to get to know each other better.”
I was quiet for a few seconds, “Phin?” “I’m sorry, I’m here.” “You...you could bring someone with you? If you want?” I frowned at the tone in her voice and could tell she was expecting me to say no. “I’d love to, Evie, but I’ll have to get back to you about whether I'll have someone with me. What time and what would you like me to bring?” I could tell by the tone in her voice she was smiling, “Oh, nothing. I have it all covered. You know me.” She laughed before she continued, “Just let me know. I can’t wait to see you Phin! Let’s say...tonight at...7? Will that work for you?” I chuckled, “Tonight at 7 is perfect, see you then. Love you.” I was a little surprised when she said it back before hanging up. Maybe things really were getting better since we were here.
------------------------------
Daniel: After delivering the papers, Rick needed to get signed, I sat in the waiting room. He had asked me to wait and bring them back signed. I decided to send Evie a quick text while I had some time. I pulled out my phone. “Hi, Sweetheart. Just letting you know I’m thinking of you. Hope things are going well at work. Miss you. xoxo” Smiling as I pressed send, i opened the browser and started scrolling through news headlines.
—————————-
Evie: I smiled when I read Daniel’s text and quickly replied back, “I miss you too. I invited my brother to dinner tonight. Would you be free to join us as well?” I had already told Phin that Daniel would be there, but I figured I’d better ask him to be sure. I really did want the two of them to get to know each other better.
-------------------
Phin: I set my phone to the side and thought about my conversation with Evie. I hated to think she thought that I would tell her no. I hadn’t realized that things had become that bad for us. Brothers and sisters fought, sure. But Evie thinking I wouldn’t want to have dinner with her and Kayden hurt my heart.
-------------------
Daniel: I saw the text notification just before the receptionist called my name. I got up to take the signed contract from her, tucking my phone away for now. “Thank you. Have a good day.” I gave her a smile as I headed back out to the car. Once the envelope was safely on the passenger seat, I took a minute to read my message. “I would love to join you for dinner. I’m almost through for the day, can I come by and help?” I smiled as I sent the message and drove back to the office. Happy to know that Kayden and Evie were going to see her brother again.
——————
Evie: I smiled at his text again. I quickly replied to him, “I would love it if you would be able to come help, but if you can’t I can take care of it all. Dinner is at 7, and he may be bringing a guest. I already have everything we need so an extra set of hands would be great.” I put my phone in my pocket and headed to the kitchen to start the process of dinner.
-----------
Phin: I picked up the paperwork I’d been working on before the call and went in search of Ava. I wanted to let her know that all the papers were in order for the new families and that they had nothing to worry about. Everything would be taken care of in the next few days.
----------------
Daniel: After telling Evie I would be there later this afternoon, I turned the radio on for the rest of the drive back to the Alexander Foundation. It was a pretty day, and I was looking forward to joining Evie before the others got there. Luckily traffic was light today so the drive wasn’t as long as I thought. Soon I was heading up to Rick’s office to drop off the contract. Since he was on a call, I left the papers with his secretary. Then I was back in the car on my way to Bon Temps.
——————-
Ava: After my meeting with the Ramseys, I headed back to my office. They were one of the first families I had helped when I started here at the Foundation. I liked to check in with each family or homeowner we helped get a new home at least quarterly if not bimonthly. Once I was in my office, I logged into my computer to update the Ramseys file. Entering my notes before I forget what we discussed.
——————-
Evie: Since Kayden was upstairs playing his game, I turned on my music as I got everything together for dinner. I sang along with the song, dancing too, while I took the pots and pans I needed. I started chopping up the onions, mushrooms, and bell pepper while I continued to sing and dance a little.
----------------
Phin: When I arrived at Ava’s office, I took a few calming breaths before knocking. When she called for me to come in, I opened the door and smiled when I saw her. I sat and let her finish up her work. I didn’t want to interrupt. When she was done, I handed over the paperwork, “Everything looks good. There shouldn’t be any problems.”
------------
Ava: Reaching for the papers from Phin, I smiled over at him. “You turned these around so quickly. Thank you.” I flipped through the forms and saw that everything was signed and initialed. “The Mitchells will be so excited to spend the Fourth of July in their new home. Have you seen the pictures? It’s one of the best ones Rafe and Aly Caldwell have done so far. At least I think so,” I laughed.
—————
Daniel: When I was only about twenty minutes away from Evie’s house, I texted her and asked if she needed or wanted anything from the store. I drummed my thumb along to the music while I waited for a response. I started to sing along as I drove.
“So I'm going home,
Back to the place where I belong,
And where your love has always been enough for me.”
—————-
Evie: When my phone dinged, I smiled and responded to Daniel, “Nope. Just need you. I have everything else, even the wine. So, I just need you. Please be careful. I can’t wait to see you.” I hit send and started playing my music again, getting back to work on dinner.
-----------------
Phin: I shook my head and grinned, “I have not, but I have heard that they do some amazing work. I’m looking forward to getting to see some of it soon.” I took a deep breath, “Ava, I was wondering if you would like to, uh, join me for dinner? It’s at my sister’s house. She called just a little while ago and said I could bring a guest with me. I, um, thought of you.” I might have blushed as I said that last part.
----------------
Ava: Each time Phineas and I talked about anything that wasn’t work related, he suddenly became shy and tripped over his words. I wasn’t sure if it was because of me or not. It was sweet but also a little sad. “I would love to join you and your sister for dinner, Phin. Is there anything I can bring?”
—————
Daniel: I couldn’t help but chuckle over my self-sufficient girlfriend’s response. Of course she didn’t need anything. Good thing I had selective hearing, I thought as I made a quick stop on my way. What she didn’t know yet wouldn’t hurt me, right? A few minutes later I was back on the road and just moments away from her house.
—————
Evie: Before long the main entree for dinner was in the oven, and I was moving onto one of the side dishes. I’d missed cooking big meals; even though I had the chance too, I just haven't. But that was about to change. I hoped so anyway. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to have dinner with everyone.
----------------
Phin: I smiled and shook my head, “I asked the same thing and was told she had everything under control. And to be honest, that doesn’t surprise me at all.” I chuckled. “Evie has always been one to plan ahead on any dinner, get together, or anything that involves food. That’s her passion. And she’s really great at it. If you ever leave Evie’s still hungry, that’s only because you didn’t eat enough. She always has plenty and then some.” I grinned.
--------------
Ava: When he talked about his sister, he always warmed up and lost the stammer. It made me happy to hear him talk about her. I had met Evie a few times but never spent much time talking to her. “What time should I be there? I probably should go home and change, right?” I didn’t want to embarrass Phin in front of his family.
—————
Daniel: I pulled up at Evie’s house and got out of the car. I thought for sure Kayden would be outside with his soccer ball, but I didn’t hear or see him anywhere. Maybe she had him working as her sous chef in a fancy apron. If so, maybe I could take his place. I tucked one arm behind my back and knocked on the door.
————-
Evie: I paused my music and smiled when I heard knocking. It didn’t matter how many times I told Daniel he could just come in, he never did. I wiped my hands off and headed to the door, grinning when I pulled it open and saw him standing there. “Hi!”
-------------
Phin: I shook my head, “It’s just a casual dinner. Nothing fancy. And you can either meet me there at 7, or...I could pick you up and...we could ride together? But that is totally up to you.” I was totally failing at this. Ava probably thought I was crazy.
-------------
Ava: “You really think I look ok?” I got up and turned around so he could see I had a dress on, not slacks. The look on his face made my stomach flutter. It was so tricky trying to read him sometimes. “If you don’t mind driving, that would be great. I should be done in about an hour. We can leave any time after that.”
————
Daniel: I smiled when she opened the door. “Hello, Beautiful. I missed you. I know you told me that you didn’t need anything, but I thought these might look good on the table.” I surprised her by pulling a lovely bouquet out from behind my back. “I hope you like the vase too. I thought it might suit your decor.”
Tumblr media
——————
Evie: I couldn’t help but grin big as I took the flowers, “These are so beautiful! Thank you so much! I love them.” I took the flowers and kissed him softly, “I don’t know what I would do without you. These will be perfect on the table.” I closed the door behind him and led the way inside, setting the flowers on the table as we passed it. “How was work?”
------------
Phin: I cleared my throat and nodded, “I think you look beautiful.” I tried not to stutter, but I’m not sure it worked. “I don’t mind driving at all. It would actually give me someone to talk to on the way there.”
---------------
Ava: “Thank you,” I smiled before sitting back down. “I’ll meet you in the lobby as soon as I finish. It will be nice to take a drive and talk for a bit. You can tell me more about your sister on the way.” Mike hadn’t spoken of her much. I think she spent more time with Rick and Brandee before she got married.
——————
Daniel: “I’m glad you liked them. I saw the vase in the window and asked them to create the arrangement for it. Something cheerful and summery. It was an easy day today. Just being a courier for some contracts that needed signing.” I followed her into the kitchen. “Something smells good. I thought Kayden might be helping you when I didn’t see him outside. Not home?”
——————-
Evie: I smiled and pointed upstairs, “Since he did so great with school, I gave him a pass to play his game just a little longer. He deserved it. He’s worked so hard.” Getting back to chopping a few things, “You can go up and say hi if you want. I’m sure he’d be happy to know you are here.”
-----------
Phin: I stood and nodded, “Sounds great. Just text me when youre done and I’ll meet you then.” I waved as I walked out of her office and made my way back to my own. I had a feeling the rest of the day was going to drag by ever so slowly.
--------------
Ava: “Sounds like a plan. I’m looking forward to it.” I watched him leave, and then quickly texted my roommates to let them know I had plans tonight. Hopefully, Aubrey would be fine on her own if Darius and Macy weren’t home. Even since her Mom came back, she’d seemed distracted. I just wished there was something any of us could do to help.
————-
Daniel: “I’ll do that if it’s ok with you.” Evie nodded and laughed when I kissed her cheek after I held her hand down with the knife in it. You know. Just in case. “Be right back,” I said as I went to find my buddy. I knocked on his door even though it was open. I didn’t want to startle him. He waved me over to show me the game he was playing. We talked privately for a few minutes, then I headed back to the kitchen after an epic high five.
—————
Evie: I started working on the next side dish. After a few minutes of quiet, I decided to hit play on my music again. I wasn’t sure how long Daniel and Kayden would talk and I hated cooking in the quiet. Once the music filled the kitchen, I was singing along and dancing as I cooked again.
---------------
Phin: I headed back to my office and decided to attempt to do some work, though I wasn’t sure how much I was going to actually get done. I quickly sent a text to Evie, letting her know that Ava and I would be joining them for dinner. And, even though I knew the answer, asked if there was anything I could bring. Every time I was around Ava, I always became shy out of nowhere. I knew it was because I liked her a lot. No matter how much I tried not to be awkward, it was always there. Ava just seemed to have the effect on me, not that I was complaining.
----------------------
Ava: This last hour had dragged. Since I knew that there was a mini road trip ahead of me not involving work, I couldn’t concentrate. I decided to stop before I made a careless mistake on something important. I logged off my computer and decided to freshen up as best I could in the ladies’ room. With a fresh coat of lipstick and a light comb through my hair, I decided I was presentable. I rubbed a little light perfume on my wrists and behind my ears. Then I walked back to my office to text Phineas and let him know I would wait in the lobby for him. I told him to take his time since I was a little early.
—————————-
Daniel: With a smile on my face and a slight spring in my step, I returned to the kitchen. I stopped in the doorway watching Evie perform as she cooked. When it looked like her hands were free of any sharp utensils, I slipped in behind her taking her hand and dancing her around the kitchen.
————————-
Evie: I laughed as Daniel and I danced around the kitchen. It was so fun and carefree. When he dipped me at the end of the song, I couldn’t help but grin. “Why thank you for that amazing dance.” I kissed him softly. “Was Kayden happy to see you?”
---------------
Phin: I had just put the last set of papers I was looking through down when I heard my phone go off. I smiled when I saw it was from Ava and that she would be in the lobby waiting. I sent her a message back and let her know that I just finished up and would be joining her in just a few minutes. I gathered my things and made sure everything was done before I sent a message to Uncle Rick that I was leaving for the day.
----------------
Ava: The breeze outside where I sat on the bench reading a book on my phone was heavenly. I had just finished a chapter when Phin texted me to let me know he’d be right down. I bookmarked my spot in the novel and then slipped my phone in my purse after checking my lipstick in the reflective case.
—————-
Daniel: “He was. We had a good chat. He showed me his game and then I returned to see your performance. I could not resist joining you.” I looked around. “So what can I do? I’m not just a pretty face, you know.” I wasn’t sure if she’d accept my help but it was worth offering.
—————
Evie: I thought for a minute about telling him I had everything under control, but decided against it. I loved spending time with Daniel and having him here with me because he wanted to help me meant a lot. I smiled, “You can cut the veggies for the salad if you want? There is another cutting board by the sink and a good chopping knife in the drawer right under that.”
----------------
Phin: Once I heard back from Uncle Rick, I grabbed my briefcase and headed down to the lobby. I couldn’t help but smile when I saw Ava waiting for me. I took a deep breath before joining her outside, “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.” She smiled and shook her head as we made our way over to my car. I opened the door for her and smiled.
------------------
Ava: He looked so grown up with his briefcase. Such a change from his stammering earlier. I buckled up while he came around the car and got in. “I am never far from a book or two. It wasn’t a long wait,” I confessed. “I decided to quit for the day while I was ahead because the thought of our drive was just too good a distraction. I didn’t mean to rush you. If we get there too early, we could always go for a walk.”
————-
Daniel: I found the cutting board and knife she mentioned and before long we were working together like we did it every day. “Don’t let me stop you from singing or dancing,” I teased. “I promise not to record you on my phone.” As tempting as it was. “Are we having an Evie Alexander original for dessert, too?”
————-
Evie: I couldn’t help but laugh as I turned down the music, but only a little. “I don’t like cooking in the quiet. I wasn’t sure how much catching up you and Kayden were going to do, so I turned the music back on. And yes, yes we are. But you won’t get to see it until later. I have some finishing touches to put on it, but those can wait for now.”
---------------
Phin: I smiled as I buckled up and started the car, “I think a walk sounds nice. Bon Temps has its own natural charm. It seems like every time you visit, you see something new.” I pulled out of the parking space and started the drive to my sister’s. “And you didn’t rush me. I had just finished reading over the last few pages I had when your text came through. I actually thought I had made you feel rushed.”
-----------------
Ava: “Not at all. I think maybe we both needed to get out of the building. I haven’t spent much time in Bon Temps. I’m more familiar with Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Are you and your sister happy to be here in the area?” I wasn’t sure where Phineas and Evie grew up. I just remember Evie spent some time living with their uncle before she got married.
——————-
Daniel: “Nothing wrong with having the music on, Sweetheart. Cooking can be a creative outlet so music makes sense to me.” I was slowly building piles of brightly colored chopped vegetables on my board. “I can’t wait to see your dessert tonight. But right now, do you trust me to put these salads together or would you like me to leave the veggies for you?”
—————-
Evie: I smiled as I stirred my pots on the stove, “I trust you to handle that. I wouldn’t have let you help me if I didn’t.” I smirked and blew him a kiss. Once I was sure everything on the stove was cooking properly, I checked the oven, grinning as the smell wrapped around me when I opened the oven. I looked over at Daniel, “Smells good?”
—————-
Phin: “I think Evie loves it here. I know she was staying with our Aunt for a while, but she found a house that’s actually not that far from her. She and Kayden have been really happy there. I try to stay back and forth, but have been staying closer to the office since Evie and I don’t really spend a huge amount of time together. Though I do hope that changes soon.”
——————
Ava: “I’m happy that Evie and your nephew are doing so well. I’m sure your aunt is thrilled to have them nearby. I know how important family is to her and your uncle.” I looked out the window, lost in thought for a few minutes. “So you haven’t really settled anywhere quite yet? Are you leaning towards one town or another?”
—————
Daniel: Chuckling as I started building our salads, I agreed that whatever was cooking in the oven smelled incredible. “Are you sure there will only be five of us tonight? There might be enough for a dozen people here,” I teased her before stealing a kiss. Evie was a wonderful cook. I just hoped she’d give herself time to relax and enjoy the company too.
————
Evie: I couldn’t help but laugh, “I’ve never really gotten used to cooking for a small number of people. Most of the time I can freeze what's left to go with another dinner later. The food that I can’t do that with, I try to pass it out so that nothing goes to waste.” I’d rather feed strangers than see the food go to waste. Besides, feeding strangers who needed it was the best way to help them.
—————
Phin: I shook my head as I stopped at a light, “No, I haven’t. To be honest I’ve been considering a place closer to the office. I mean don’t get me wrong, I really hope Evie and I become close again, but it just makes more sense for me to be closer to work since I’ll be there more. Or is that crazy thinking?”
———————
Ava: “Not crazy at all. It does make sense. I’m only in New Orleans once a week or so. I usually work from the Baton Rouge office which is where the house I share with my roommates is. It’s only a little over an hour’s drive, but not something I’d want to do everyday. You and your sister don’t have to live next door to each other in order to grow closer, right?”
————————
Daniel: “I was only teasing you, Sweetheart,” I grinned as I put the finishing touches on the salads. “There! I think these are up to your standards. Once you approve them, I can move them to the fridge and see if Kayden will help me set the table.” I moved aside to wash the knife I used and then my hands while she inspected my work.
——————-
Evie: I glanced over and smiled, “They look perfect! And that would be great,” I glanced at the clock, “They should be here soon so having the table set already would be perfect. Thank you so much for all the help you’re giving me.” After he finished washing the knife and cutting board he used, I walked over and hugged him, placing a kiss on his cheek.
——————-
Phin: I smiled and nodded, “Exactly. I mean we grew up in the same house together and fought like normal brothers and sisters fight. I think it’s time for us to have our own space, right?” I laughed as I stopped at a stop sign, “Besides after everything she has been through, she needs her space. I don’t want to crowd her and make her feel like I’m hovering.”
————————
Ava: Now that we were out of the office and talking about his family, he seemed so much more relaxed. Smiling, I looked over at him. “I can’t picture you hovering, but I guess that’s a brother’s prerogative.” He chuckled after stealing a glance my way. “You do deserve your own space. Of course, you do. My older sister moved in not long ago. It’s been great having her so close, but I know it’s a temporary thing.”
————————-
Daniel: “I love doing things together with you, Evie. Especially something you love so much.” I returned her hug and kissed her properly before drying the knife and cutting board and putting them away. I kissed her quickly once more than went up to ask Kayden to help me set the table. We talked for a few minutes, exchanged high fives, and then proceeded to set the table even better than we ever had before. It was a special occasion after all.
—————————-
Phin: “I bet it’s been great having her so close though. I miss being that close with Evie. But a lot has happened, especially after the accident. I'm not so sure we can ever be what we used to be, but I am hoping that we can rebuild our bond and make it stronger.” I pulled into the drive and took a deep breath, “We’re here.”
-----------------
Evie: As the guys set the table, I made quick work of making sure everything was done and ready to be carried in. Once they came back and told me the places were set, we carried the food in and arranged it on the table so that everyone could reach everything, but it wasn’t crowded. I looked over at Kayden and Daniel, “Well, what do you guys think? Am I missing anything?” I bit my lip.
----------------------
Ava: I wasn’t exactly clear about the accident, but now wasn’t the time to ask. I reached over to squeeze Phineas’ hand. “I think you two will get there. To that closeness you miss. This is a good step, right?” I gave him a smile and started to reach for the door. I did not think he could move that fast. He shot out of the driver’s seat and over to my side to open my door in a blur. I tried not to laugh as I took his offered hand and got out of the car.
————————
Daniel: I looked at Kayden and winked. “Everything is gorgeous, Evie. Almost as beautiful as you are. Right, Kayden?” He grinned and gave Evie a thumbs up. “Looks awesome, Mom.” I was about to give her a kiss when we heard a knock on the door. “Perfect timing!”
————————-
Phin: I smiled as we walked up to the door, “I hope you’re right.” I took a deep breath and knocked. I looked over at Ava while we waited, “I’m glad you came with me.” I stopped myself before I said anything more.
-----------------
Evie: “Suck ups!” I laughed as we all went to the door together. I opened the door and smiled when I saw Phin, “Hi! I’m so glad you could make it! Please come in.” I stepped back so that they could both step into the house and closed the door behind them, “You actually have perfect timing. Dinner just got placed on the table.”
-------------------
Ava: l had barely finished telling him I was glad he asked me when the front door opened and his lovely sister was ushering us inside. “It smells fantastic,” I smiled as I walked in and took a quick look around. “Your house is so lovely. Bright and welcoming.” I couldn’t help but notice Daniel’s arm around Phineas’ nephew’s shoulders. Next to Evie, they were the picture of a happy family. It made me smile.
———————
Daniel: “We’re glad you could both join us. Evie only knows how to cook enough for a crowd. Or a growing boy,” I grinned as I ruffled Kayden’s hair. “I hope you’re hungry. If not, you’ll need a suitcase for leftovers.” Evie blushed as I teased her. I knew she was a little nervous so I hoped getting everyone to laugh would help prevent any tension. Kayden led the way over to the dining room. I pointed out the guest bathroom in case they wanted to freshen up after the drive.
——————
Phin: I excused myself for just a minute to wash my hands and take a couple deep breaths, I made sure not to take too long because I didn’t want Ava to feel like I abandoned her. I smiled at her as I rejoined them, “Ava is right, it does smell incredible Evie.” I looked over at Daniel and grinned, “I will always have room for leftovers too!” We laughed as we made our way over to the table. “Wow, Evie, this looks amazing.”
----------------
Evie: I smiled as everyone took their seats, “I just thought it would be nice to have a good meal and good company. We haven’t really had the chance to hang out much or talk since everyone is busy, and I thought we should take the opportunity while we had the chance.” I was trying not to be overly talkative and show my nerves, I just hoped it was working.
----------------
Ava: I placed my napkin on my lap and then briefly rested my hand on Phin’s. “I think I’ve been looking forward to a home cooked meal since Phineas invited me earlier today. Your uncle raves about your cooking so often.” I reached for my water and took a sip. “Did you help your Mom with the cooking, Kayden?” He looked at Evie and then shrugged. “I tried to stay out of her way. She kinda likes to perform when she cooks.”
———————
Daniel: Thank goodness I wasn't drinking when Kayden answered Ava. I would have spit it all out accidentally. “Um…Evie likes music on when she cooks. Right, sweetheart?” I reached for her hand under the table and gave it a squeeze. “I put the salads together but this feast is all Evie. Kayden and I did set the table though so she could put her finishing touches on everything.” Kayden snickered while he pretended to focus intently on his salad.
——————
Phin: I couldn’t help but laugh at what Kayden had said, when I looked over at Evie she was blushing a little. I grinned over at her, “Do you remember what started that?” I could tell she was trying to remember, so I decided to help her. “Dad was working late, again, and we were hungry. You had been watching cooking shows for weeks and wanted to cook. We went into the kitchen and you were second guessing yourself because you were scared you were going to mess it up. I went upstairs, grabbed the radio and brought it downstairs. I plugged it up and put your favorite cd in.” Evie looked at me and grinned.
------------------------
Evie: I couldn’t hold my smile back as I remembered that day. “I was scared dad was going to be mad, especially if I messed up dinner and wasted food. You told me that you knew I could do it and that you were there to help with whatever I needed. After that you hit play and stepped back. Before long I was singing along to the cd and was cooking our dinner...spaghetti right?” Phin grinned and nodded, “With your special garlic bread.” I laughed. “I can’t believe I forgot about that, having music on while cooking became a habit after that.”
-----------------
Ava: Watching Phineas reconnect with Evie over shared memories got me a little misty-eyed. I stayed quiet eating and sipping my water. Every once and a while Kayden and I would catch each other’s eye and try not to laugh…much. He seemed like a great kid. Funny and polite. Watching him interact with Daniel was a glimpse into the future. I had a feeling Daniel was a permanent part of this family even if he stopped working for the Foundation.
——————-
Daniel: I was so happy that Evie and her brother were reminiscing so affectionately tonight. I knew how important he was and how much she missed him. Kayden deserved to be able to spend time with him, too. I raised my glass. I couldn’t help but wonder if Ava would become a frequent visitor in the near future. She seemed to balance and calm Phineas’ energy. I reached for my glass, raising it. “To music, family, friends and good food!”
———————
Phin: I raised my glass with Daniel, “To music, family, friends, and good food!” We clinked glasses and took a sip before continuing our dinner. “So Kayden, your mom was telling me you’re really big into video games?” Kayden grinned and nodded, “I am. Mom lets me play as long as I keep my grades up and behave.”

Evie: I smiled and nodded, “Kayden is a big help to me. I don’t mind giving him a little leeway. He’s a great kid and hardly ever gives me problems.” I was so proud after everything we had been through that he had turned out so great. “He’s already decided he wants to go to college to become a programmer for games and such. We’ve talked about it at length, researched it, and he knows I fully support that decision. He’s been working really hard to keep his grades up. I’m very proud of how hard he’s working to accomplish his goals.”
--------------------
Ava: “You know my roommate is a really talented graphic designer. He and his partner do all kinds of websites and projects. I bet he would be happy to talk to you about it some time.” I looked over at Evie. “If that’s okay with you, of course. You met him I think. Darius. He dates your cousin Macy.”
——————-
Daniel: Kayden got so excited that I couldn’t help but laugh. “I think that would be a good idea. I bet he could recommend software you should learn and what kind of computer would be good, too.” I glanced at Evie.”You know for the near future. If you keep your grades up.” I wasn’t about to promise him anything. He wasn’t my son. But I would definitely talk to Evie about us possibly going together on an upgraded computer in the future.
———————
Phin: I couldn’t help but smile. I could tell Evie was so supportive of Kayden’s dreams, she wasn’t just saying it to make him happy. She really meant every word. I smiled even more when Ava offered to introduce him to Darius and see if he could help him. And the way Daniel jumped in to support him without stepping on Evie’s toes. I could tell how important they were to each other.
-------------------
Evie:  I smiled as everyone was talking with Kayden about his future plans. It made my heart so happy to hear how excited everyone was for him and willing to help him. I smiled over at Ava, “Thank you so much for that offer, that would be so awesome for Kayden. Phin can give you my number and, after you talk to him, you can call and let me know. I know that would mean so much to Kayden and myself.” I grinned over at Daniel and reached for his hand, squeezing it gently to let him know how thankful I was for him and everything he was doing.
-------------------
Ava: “I’d be happy to set it up. Darius used to live here in Bon Temps and volunteered at the Library delivering to homebound patrons. I’m sure your aunt would vouch for him,” I said with a laugh. I didn’t want her to think that he was some random friend who might or might not be a good influence on her son. “The food is delicious, by the way. I feel like we’re in a fine restaurant.”
--------------
Daniel: “Everything really is delicious, Evie,” I smiled as I took another bite. “Maybe someday we will all be gathered in Evie’s very own restaurant, not that I don’t love the cafe and bakery that you work at.” I had a feeling that Evie would have a fantastic restaurant if that’s what she wanted in the future. And I would certainly help her if it was her dream. I knew her family would as well. “So Phineas, how are you enjoying working for the Alexander Foundation? You work in the legal department, right?”
---------------------------
Phin: I took a sip of my drink and nodded, “I do. And I love it. But I do have to admit, it’s a lot more different than I expected, but in a good way. I always thought I was going to be stuck in courtrooms battling it out with another lawyer, wondering if I was doing the right thing. But working with the Foundation, I don’t have to wonder about that. I know I am. And it’s a really good feeling.”
----------
Evie: I smiled as I listened to Phin talk about his work. “You seem really happy working there.” Phin nodded, “I really am.” “I’m glad to hear that. I think working somewhere you like, doing something you love, I think it makes all the difference.”
------------------
Daniel: After finishing my food, I pushed the plate aside. “You’re absolutely right. If I was working as a messenger and driver for anyone else, it might be boring and make me look elsewhere. But working with the Foundation is fulfilling and they make me feel valued.” I lifted my glass. “Would anyone else like a drink refill?” I winked at Kayden and started to get up. “Yes, please!”
——————-
Ava: “I think Mike and his brother do value the people around them. Maybe even more so after growing up as they did. At least from the little I have heard.” I bit my lip hoping I hadn’t said something wrong. “Um…I would like some more. Thank you.” I smiled as Daniel nodded and cleared his plate.
———————
Phin: I thought about what Ava said and nodded. “It would make sense that people who have been through or dealt with a lot would have a different outlook to those who have been handed everything, if that makes sense.” I thanked Daniel for the refill when he set my glass down. “So, Evie, how are things going? Are you still hoping to have your own restaurant one day again?” I didn’t want to bring up bad memories for her, but I was curious about her plans.
---------------
Evie: I sat back listening to Ava and Phin, agreeing with them both. But then Phin’s question caught me off guard. I hesitated for a moment before answering, “Um, honestly? I’m not sure. Before…the accid…everything that was my dream. But I haven’t given it much thought since I’ve been back. I’ve really just been focusing on finding a home for Kayden and I, the cafe, and Daniel. I…I haven’t given much thought to my future. It’s changed so much over the last few years. I kind of just focus on the now.” I smiled a little, or tried. I knew Phin didn’t mean any harm by his question, but at the same time the memories weren’t as welcomed.
------------------------
Daniel: When I heard her say that she hadn’t thought about her future, I felt a lump in my throat. I started second guessing myself. Then I heard Kayden. “Since you made this amazing meal, Mom, Daniel and I will clear the table, right, Daniel?” I got up and gave him a grateful smile. “Absolutely. You three visit. We’ll just be a minute.” Kayden and I carefully gathered up all the dishes and carried them to the kitchen so we could load the dishwasher before dessert.
———————-
Ava: It was lovely to see how well Daniel and Phin’s nephew got along. They felt like family. “Dinner really was delicious, Evie. Thank you again.” I reached for my drink and turned to Phin. “And thank you for inviting me to join you.” Smiling, I raised my glass to him and took a drink.
—————-
Evie: I was sure that Daniel misunderstood what I meant as I watched him and Kayden disappear into the kitchen, but I wasn’t sure how to explain myself to where he would understand. It’s not that I didn’t see a future with him, I did. A wonderful one, so wonderful it scared me because of what happened before. But that wasn’t what I hadn’t thought about. I hadn’t thought about a restaurant again or anything like that. I was scared that if I went after the same dreams, that history would repeat itself again. And I didn’t think I could make it through losing Daniel.
----------------
Phin: I couldn’t help smiling back at Ava, she was so beautiful. It took me a moment to realize she had said something to me, “Oh, you’re welcome. I’m glad you could make it. Evie always out does herself with dinner…well, really anything she cooks.” We all chuckled and Evie tried to deny it. I shook my head with a grin, “Evie, you’ve always been an amazing cook. And it’s always made you happy. I’m glad to see it’s one of the things that still does.”
--------
Daniel: Once everything was cleaned up in the kitchen, I gave Kayden the dessert plates and forks. “Thanks, K.” I ruffled his hair and checked my pocket before returning to the dining room. I knew Evie wanted to present the dessert herself, so I started a pot of coffee and then made sure all she would have to do was focus on her latest creation. Taking a deep breath, I returned to Evie’s side. “All cleaned up thanks to Kayden’s help.”
—————-
Ava: I loved seeing Phineas and Evie relax in each other’s company. It felt like they had rekindled their previous closeness once more. I knew that’s what he really wanted. “I can tell that you’re a natural, Evie. I hope that I get to try your cooking again sometime.” Kayden came back in with a big grin. “Brought the dessert plates, but Mom won’t let anyone see what it is yet.” I couldn’t help but laugh when he set them down and bowed to her. Moments later, Daniel joined us as well.
——————
Evie: “You’re welcome to visit and join us for dinner anytime, Ava.” I couldn’t help but laugh at Kayden and his antics. “Is that your way of telling me that you’re ready for dessert?” I reached over and took Daniel’s hand as Kayden answered, “Of course!” We all laughed and I stood up, “Well, I won’t keep everyone waiting anymore.” I laughed again when Kayden cheered and made my way to the kitchen after kissing Daniel’s cheek. I really hoped he gave me a chance to explain later.
-----------------
Phin: I chuckled as Kayden sat down, “Smooth dude, really smooth.” He just grinned at me, “Thanks. She always does these really cool desserts and normally I get to help, but tonight she wanted it to be a surprise and shooed me out of the kitchen. I didn’t even get to taste test anything this time.” I laughed a little, “Well that sucks, taste testing everything is the best part!”
-----------
Daniel: Watching Kayden and Phineas made me smile. It was good to see them bonding as family. Evie, Phineas and Kayden deserved to have a loving, supportive family around. We all did. I turned to Ava and asked her how she was enjoying her job. “Was it difficult switching from working with one brother to the other?” Rick’s brother Mike wasn’t around the foundation much, so I was curious.
——————-
Ava: “Actually they’re both very easy to work with,” I smiled as I smoothed my hands on my skirt. “They make me feel more like a partner or teammate than just an employee if that makes sense. And they encourage me to take initiative.” As I talked to Daniel, I couldn’t help but watch Phin and his nephew teasing each other. It had been such a lovely evening.
—————
Evie: I put the finishing touches on dessert and headed back to the dining room, stopping just short of being seen so I could watch Kayden and Phin. I couldn’t help but smile. Seeing them get along and laugh, it made me happy. Kayden deserved to be around family. I started to frown as I wished his dad’s family felt the same. I sighed and pushed the thoughts from my mind. One day he’d be old enough to decide if he wanted to tackle those issues. And if he did, I’d be in his corner the whole way. I put a smile on my face and walked into the room.
------------------
Phin: I couldn’t get over how much Kayden had grown since they’d been gone. It felt like just yesterday that Evie and Seth brought him home. He had been so tiny. I couldn’t wait to be an uncle. I was so ready to spoil him. Then he lost his dad and I lost them. It was still hard to wrap my head around sometimes. Everything had happened so fast. Seth was gone and not long after so were Evie and Kayden. My thoughts were interrupted from their dark path when Evie walked in, “Ta da!”
----------------
Daniel: “Ta da!” The smile on her face drew me in. I barely noticed the beautiful dessert she brought over. “Awesome, Mom!” I couldn’t help laughing. Of course, the bottomless pit named Kayden spoke up first. Everyone started chiming in after that. It really did look like a magazine photoshoot on the table. “That is spectacular, Sweetheart. Really beautiful.” I pulled out her chair and accidentally knocked her napkin on the floor.
—————
Ava: I wasn’t sure I had enough room in my stomach for any more food. Then Evie brought out the most exquisite dessert I had ever seen in person. “That’s homemade?” I couldn’t believe it. “You need to start selling desserts like that. You could make a fortune.” Kayden started to hand out forks when Daniel disappeared. Or at least it felt like he did. One minute he was pulling out Evie’s chair and the next he was…gone?
—————-
Evie: I couldn’t help but smile even more, “Yes, it is homemade. While we were gone, I, uh, needed something to focus on besides Kayden. At some point I knew I was hovering too much and focusing too much on him. My life was literally just going to and from work and caring for him.” I smiled over at Kayden who was beaming at me, “Though, I don’t regret a moment of it, Kayden eventually told me that I had to do something for me too. So on my off days, I’d take classes. When I couldn’t go to classes, I found things on YouTube. I think it’s one of the best ideas Kayden has ever given me.” I went to reach for Daniel’s hand and realized he wasn’t sitting beside me. “Daniel?”
--------------------
Phin: I grinned at the pride on Kayden’s face, you couldn’t miss it. He kept his smile while he shrugged, “Mom deserved to have some fun. She was always working so hard and taking care of me, it was her turn.” He pointed at the cake, “And how lucky was I cause I got to try everything she’s made!” We all started laughing. When Evie called Daniel’s name, I realized he was still ducked down behind the table.
----------------
Daniel: By the time Evie realized that I was on my knee beside her, I almost lost my nerve. “Daniel?” I slowly pulled the box from my pocket. “You said that you hadn’t thought much about yourself or the future. I can think of nothing else. You and Kayden are my future. If you’ll have me. Everleigh Alexander, will you be my wife?”

—————
Ava: I never expected to be witnessing such a lovely, romantic proposal. When we realized what was happening, we all grew still. Except for Kayden who must have been in on the surprise. He was practically vibrating with excitement as we waited for Evie’s answer.
——————-
Evie: I looked from Daniel to the ring and back again. I wanted to say yes the moment he asked, but I hesitated. I looked at Kayden, but the look on his face told me he knew and he was okay with it. I grinned through tears I didn’t even know were falling, “Yes! A thousand times yes!”
—————
Phin: We all cheered when Evie said yes, Kayden louder than anyone. The joy that was coming from my sister as she slung her arms around Daniel was something that I hadn’t expected to ever see again. It made me happy that I hadn’t missed this dinner tonight. I raised my glass and grinned, “Congratulations to my amazing sister and my soon to be brother-in-law!”
——————-
Daniel: There wasn’t a dry eye in the house by the time I finally let go of my fiancée. When she baked the incredible cake we were now enjoying, she had no idea it would end up being our engagement party cake. I hoped I could keep surprising her for the rest of our lives. Later, after we were alone, I would tell her how Kayden and I went shopping for rings but decided to have my great-grandmother’s ring cleaned and reset instead.
