she knows how she sounds. insane. there's a reason she doesn't tell anyone the things she sometimes sees... even when she's awake. but there's a feeling at the bottom of rachel's stomach that tells her the berries will be there. that it won't be wasted time. ❛ yeah, I know. I told you it's dumb, but I just have a feeling. I mean I probably took a walk the last couple days and saw it and... forgot or something. ❜ rachel doesn't really care if nancy thinks she sounds stupid, though. if there's a chance they could find something other than buck meat to eat, well... isn't it worth the chance they'd take?

❛ thanks, ❜ she sighs, immediately relieved. there's a solid chance her brain will explode if she goes there alone and the berries really are there. only, again, that feeling rises. and suddenly, rachel can't wait to set off. her brow flattens in determination. ❛ you tell van we're taking a walk, I'm going to get my sketchbook. ❜ she mumbles something about keeping track of the path and strides into the cabin to look through her handful of items.

rachel returns two minutes later, her lips twisting downwards. ❛ ready? ❜ it's not until they're past the trees that she glances at nancy. her cousin isn't the most social. she knows it's probably killing her being here. ❛ hey, if i haven't said it yet... ❜ her lips twist into a smile. ❛ i'm glad you survived the plane crash. ❜

she had become somewhat reclusive in recent days; the tension and anxiety of the group at large had become a norm that she wasn't quite used to dealing with. the only reason she could tolerate being on the team was the ability to go home and decompress after practices and matches. being trapped in the wilderness had made nancy truly realize how precious that time was.

but she doesn't flinch at the sound of her name, or even hesitate to turn rachel's way. at least it wasn't misty coming to bother her for the thousandth time that day. scooting sideways on the log she had taken up, she offering the empty space beside her as a makeshift seat, nodding at the request with a quiet, "of course you can."

there was no amount of decompressing that could have prepared her for what came out of rachel's mouth next, however. a stunned silence took hold, which was okay in hindsight. any first instinct might have hurt her cousin's feelings, which was the last thing nancy wanted to do. survival wouldn't be any easier if they weren't getting along.

"you think... there might be something out there because you dreamt it?" she questioned, choosing the words with care, trying not to sound as incredulous as she felt. "okay... okay. sure." what harm could it do to look? food was scarce as it is. if they were lucky, they'd come across something. "i'll come with you," she agreed, moving to stand, dusting off her hands on her jeans — as if it was possible to feel truly clean anymore. "we should at least tell someone we're leaving, though."

nancy's the most rational of them all; her and coach. and probably taissa. she needs rational right about now. ❛ I had this weird dream. probably all the weird game we're having to eat. "why not make it a game?"

❛ okay... ❜ rachel muses. ❛ what kind of game, though? not the kind where we summon anything, right? ❜ she's never told anyone this, but if there's one thing she can't stand, it's hard-core horror –– slashers are fine, and so are zombie movies. but possession? ghosts? demons? creepy dolls that come to life? now that rachel knows the gods exist and walk amongst them, it's almost like anything's possible. so summoning bloody mary in the bathroom mirror is something she will absolutely not be doing tonight.

❛ yeah, no, I'm down. ❜ she aims a smile at lou ellen, bumping her shoulder gently into hers. ❛ you're a good friend. not too many people would be willing to help someone organize over four-hundred copic markers and switch out the old cartridges. you're a real one. a total mvp. ❜

Percy is relieved when they go on break, and snaps his full focus over to Rachel. He’s all but beaming at her. “I hardly see how I’m sick and twisted for wanting to hold your hand.”

“A fidget spinner isn’t attached to your arm,” he says. “That didn’t sound as cute as I meant it. I just prefer holding your hand.” He wiggles his fingers again. “Wanna’ go grab lunch?”

❛ it’d be kind of weird if a fidget spinner was –– yeah, exactly. kind of a cool commentary on the way plastic is taking over everything, though... ❜ inspiration is everywhere. maybe percy doesn’t realize it, but she finds a lot of it through him. usually without meaning to. 

❛ gods, yeah. I’m starving. sometimes these meetings are the meaning of ‘this could have been an email.’ what are you in the mood for? ❜
