have to expand on this here but essentially it just dawns on me every now and again that the book is written by a morman man and therefore there are only 3 established female characters in this first book. vin, lady shan and the dead wife. i already raved about how its not remarked upon at all that vin is sixteen and elend, the man she is paired with, is twenty one - but the fact that the only fury vin gets from women is because She has elend’s attention and not them is just sad to see in such an interestingly built world. shan could be such an interesting character, typical noble asshole soother but instead she gets introduced and then later on remarked upon only as the bitter woman who hates vin because she cant get elend. wowza frankly
developing a simmering hatred for elend the longer i read mistborn

chapter 9 of misery business is sure giving me a kick in the ass with the sheer pressure im putting on myself to make it super ultra deep while still keeping core dialogues from the game. so what i might do it post like an 8.1 chapter thats shorter and more lighthearted so i at least get myself to updating

i think my favorite ships/dynamics (ei lady maria x hunter / rook x solas [more on that below] for example) always include a big chunk of incompatibility. dont get me wrong i love when two characters are absolutely made for each other and whatnot but from a readers and writers perspective, i find the former so much more appealing.
my argument for it is both deep and superficial. superficial in the way that i enjoy having character banter and disagree and have that later resort to reluctant friendship to angry making out. but on a deeper level, having characters see themselves in each other and hate it is so satisfying. they see their own flaws reflected and it makes them fume, they therefore resort to violence, disagreement, senseless hostility all to bash that part of them in the other as well as just the entire other.
in the example of rook and solas, their blatant roles as narrative foils works in favor of this dynamic and also my enjoyment of the ship. solas sees in rook the fire of justice and heroism he once had himself when fighting the evanuris, and as the story goes, rook sees his insecurities surrounding his job as the 'hero' personified in the ever pressuring presence of solas. they are inherently conflicting characters despite being forced to work together towards what they think is right, up until their paths diverge. this is where the true tragedy and angst happens. if we interpret solas, in veilguard specifically, not just as a character but specifically as a metaphor for rooks pride, the moment solas betrays him, it could be read as rook's pride shattering him, or in another reading, the pressure/insecurity cresting over him, he in a way ruined himself as much as solas ruined him.
if i were to compare solas and rook to solas and lavallan, it's kind of the point i made about how i prefer conflicting characters in a ship rather than forever-lovers made for each other (also in part because im queer and solavellan never gave me that juice i needed). solas and rook, if made a possibility, canonically, could never work which is why i love it. i guess that works in the same way for solavellan too if you play it that the inquisitor did not want to save solas and instead wished to stop/kill him (my preferred way of playing that when i play a lavallan) because its the conflict and the 'it simply cannot ever be but the enticing few moments where it feels like it can is intoxicating'
i wanna get more into lady maria and the hunter but that needs its own post because i have so many emotions surrounding them

i love writing and fanfiction so much, its such passion of mine and it has and always will be a fun hobby for me. hot take but I really enjoy having writers block as weird as that sounds, maybe because it just makes me feel like a writer? as silly as it may sound, like yes it's hard for me to formulate the next scene but ive got so much excitement in me about it that i don't even mind it that much at the end of the day. sitting down and just making something from the depths of my mind exist? just appear for others and myself to read? thats so cool. i love fanfiction dude i love the cringe and the long thousand page ones and the one shots and the slowburns and the in depth world building like what more of a gift could you ask for

hi back with another lukewarm take ! (nothing against op and i dont even disagree ((i very agree with the feeling of bleh at my favorite character being mischaracterized) with them im just using that argument to then make my own seperate fandom argument) (im not doing like a debate or anything i just rlly like delving into fandoms and whatnot)
i had to, growing up in fandom, kind of let myself get used to and ‘see where they are coming from’ my way into not getting irrationally mad at drawings or pieces of work that misconstrue my favorite characters or settings. and i feel like thats because we as queer and neurodivergent fandomers do that all the time too - we apply headcanons to characters that justify their actions and thoughts or even just because we feel represented by that character and want more representation in our particular identities! which is so awesome.
I also fundamentally disagree with the idea that there can only ever be one version of a character. if at the end of the day a character is a tool used for story telling, that story telling tool is malleable to change by the readers eyes and hands. of course there gets to a point where someone changes a character up so much its barely even the canon character, but thats the canon character to oc pipeline which ive seen so much and also just find fun.
so sometimes when i scroll through my fav characters tag on tumblr and find a drawing of them changed up and mischaracterized (as long as its not something deeply racist, bigoted, sexist, transphobic etc etc change made for a malicious or cruel purpose or for aformentioned ‘trying to clap back at queer or neurodivergent people’ reasons then) i kinda taught myself to understand that hey - this is how this person uses that character for their own storyline, however off the main canon it may be. (so duh i go to my friends and roll my eyes at the piece and gossip about it but all in private because why would i want to make something like that private).
i have my own headcanons and characteristics for characters that i find infallible and true but truthfully are long shots away from the original creators ‘intent’ for the character. so yeah i see people woobify or babygirlify or something-else-ify a character that i wouldnt think would be like that but i now think its a kinda fun exercise especially for younger fandomers cause hey why not, is not hurting anyone
as with all things there are exceptions and grey areas to this stuff, all and most too complex to really lay out because it depends on the characters and whatnot
y’all ever see a piece of fan content about your favorite character that is so horrifically different from what you personally believe and you just
#when i refer to changing up a character i often refer to characters made by large productions and companies and Not oc’s made by one person#the idea of who a character ‘belongs’ to is iffy when looking up the long chain of command and production that led the character into fandom#whereas an oc has an ‘owner’ so to say and therefore full hands on control on how they are seen and portrayed.#its not productive to have to reach out to bug productions to ask for permission to change up their characters as it is to ask a single -#person if they have their permission to depict a character a certain way#yipeeee
