COVID finally got me just after the new year. Fortunately, I only had about 24 hours of bad symptoms (fever, chills, body aches). Then I had 48 hours of feeling off but okay. Only medication I took was 2 Advil liquid gels every 8 hours, which seemed to clear any symptoms I had. Now I feel pretty much back to normal after a total of 4 days, and got a lift in today from @juggernauttraining BJJAI lifestyle program. 💪 I know I showed a bit of my workouts in the past, which I think intimidated some people as they were 2-3 hours long. 😂 However, the Juggernaut BJJ AI lifestyle program much more efficient, taking less than an hour to complete with warm ups and all. Then lifestyle program is a great place for newcomers to lifting to start, those that just want to compliment their jujitsu game with strength training but not invest a lot of time, or for those that just want to maintain their current strength levels which is my case. https://www.instagram.com/davidavellan/p/CYcyXqJpkhE/?utm_medium=tumblr

Jamie and I officially got married. 💒 @yogajlc was as beautiful as ever, and I managed to clean up ok. We had a nice, private ceremony which was performed quickly, which made Jamie happy. For the honeymoon, we will be heading back to the Maldives in February for scuba diving, spa, and beaches. https://www.instagram.com/davidavellan/p/CX_pg5Spw0c/?utm_medium=tumblr

If was great having my family in town this past week, with @marcosavellan @rimaavellan and the kids, along with my parents. We got to do a little hiking, archery, hosted a petting zoo at our house (thanks for @yogajlc ), and eat just about every cut of bison and elk I had. It's been a long time since we had everyone under one roof, and I'm thankful that I got to spend this time with them all. Until next time 💓 (at Valley of Fire State Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWzQk_4Jds5/?utm_medium=tumblr

I saw some people posting there urban dictionary names, and figured it would be silly nonsense. However, reading my name's description is spot on...🤣 https://www.instagram.com/p/CWpnhHrrh0u/?utm_medium=tumblr

Some creepy artwork just in time for Halloween. Not sure I would want to wake up in the middle of the night to some of these pieces 😂 (at Casa de los Venados) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVZPfM1ta6n/?utm_medium=tumblr

@yogajlc and I got to explore the ruins of Chichen-Itza, which was really cool to see. Particularly the ball court, which had some amazing acoustics (sound would echo strongly). It seems it would have been their version of the coliseum, as players were sacrificed at the end of the game. People are unsure who the victim was: the winner or loser. But the roar of the crowd would have been thunderous. Afterwards, we got to plunge into another Cenote, just a mole away from the ruins. @yogajlc and I visited the ruins of Ek Balam, an ancient Mayan city. It's cool to be able to get a slight glimpse into the past of an ancient civilization that had many insights into life. Although I'm not about the sacrifices, that I would pass on 😂 (at Ekbalam, Yucatan, Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVTyQ58NXPm/?utm_medium=tumblr

I took Jamie up for a hike at Red Rock Canyon, one of my favorite spots here in Las Vegas. Little did she know what I had in store for her. As we climbed to the top, I had her pose for a picture looking out at the distance. I then took a knee and proposed, and all went to plan. 😁 I'm very grateful to have someone so smart, funny, industrious, adventurous, and beautiful by my side. Forever with her is heaven on earth. 💓 (at Red Springs at Red Rock) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU1BtIfB4O-/?utm_medium=tumblr

What isn't measured isn't improved. Getting the most performance out of yourself requires experimenting and reporting. This past week, I ran a little experiment on myself. I have published my fitness routine a few weeks ago here, but I wasn’t entirely happy with it. You see, most of my exercise was non-martial arts activities. I would get 2-3 training sessions a week, with only 1 that had rolling in it. The other sessions were technique sessions. Why? Because I found that the wear and tear of sparring was too much. With weight training, conditioning work, stretching and mobility, plus runs and walks – the sparring just was too much to stack on to that. In the weight lifting world, they use a term called Maximum Recoverable Volume (MRV). MRV represents the amount of physical output your body can perform and still recovery from optimally. Typically, your MRV is high for young athletes, and goes downhill as you age. Unfortunately, this is a real phenomenon that has to be respected. So I noticed in the past few weeks that I seemed to be having a harder time doing my workout routine. Last week, I decided to remove everything and just focus on doing grappling. The goal was to get 3 good session in and see how my body responds. I managed to sneak in a 4th one on Sunday, and made it without injury. Yes! I made it through without injury, but I will say on Monday I was sore. Particularly, certain problem areas seemed to just get worse after each session. These areas only seem to get aggravated by grappling. So this week, I’m going to work to get 3 martial arts sessions in, 2 weight training sessions, 2 conditioning sessions, 3 walks, 3 leg mobility sessions, and 3 shoulder mobility sessions. This might sound like a lot, to add on, but previously I was doing about 50% more outside of the martial arts. I’m also switching my focus on weight training. This is the first time in years I have successfully trained martial arts 4 times in 1 week without getting hurt. At 40 years old, that feels like an amazing accomplishment. 😂 I have adopted a very active lifestyle in the past few years, which includes weight training, stretching, strength and conditioning, walking, running, and archery. The lesson I learned is I have too much on my plate. This week, I took out all the weight training, stretching, and everything else. I just wanted to see how much grappling I could do in a week without doing anything else. I got 4 good sessions in, getting at least 30 minutes of live work each session. Today's session was not part of the plan, but I decided to get it in and glad I did. So what do they learn from all this? That I need to reduce my workout volume. I reached a significant level of strength in the past few years from weight training along with my conditioning. So from this point on, I'm not going to focus on getting stronger. I'm just going to focus on maintaining strength and gaining mobility. I want my focus now to be on getting back on the mats. https://www.instagram.com/p/CTdBnj8vTy-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Today's workout. I put in a good 3 hours between band work, lifting, and stretching under tension. It's not easy gearing up to do that much activity, especially when you're very sore. But nowadays it's easier for me to decide to do these workouts than to not to. With everything going on in this world, it should be obvious, well at least to me, that prioritizing your health is of the utmost importance. No one is going to take care of your health for you. You need to exercise, eat right, and get outside and explore the world while you can. As far as I'm concerned, there's no substitute for those three things and anyone trying to tell you there is is lying to you. I don't expect someone to jump off the couch and start doing a routine like I am. You have to build your way up to it and take baby steps. It could start simply just by doing 20 push-ups every morning. Stick to that for 2 or 3 weeks and then you'll get the courage to add a little bit more, maybe 30 crunches. Another two 3 weeks of that and then maybe add jumping rope for 10 minutes. You keep doing these small increments over time and after a few months you'll build up to something that you would have thought you could never achieve when you first started. You might think I'm full of crap, but I can tell you firsthand this is how it works. Everyone wants to jump into the deep end of the pool right away and expect to be able to hang. Some people might be able to do that, and usually they have some natural gifts or they already come from a background of intense discipline. But if you're Joe schmoe and just want to start, don't go all in because chances are you're going to drown. It's just like with dieting. Everyone wants to weight loss plan that will give them 30 lb in one month. That's not sustainable or healthy. The reality is you should be shooting for two to six pounds per month. But people think that's not fast enough - and that's the point. It's not a race to get to the finish line. You have to be able to maintain, because the race doesn't end when you get to your "finish line" - the race ends when you die. Baby step your way and you will be amazed what you can achieve https://www.instagram.com/p/CTEK1C5nRSX/?utm_medium=tumblr

In September, I will in San Diego from the 12-15th (Sunday to Wednesday). If there is a school in the area that wants to host me for a seminar on the Sunday (possibly that Saturday the 11th as well), I would be down to teach a kick-ass seminar. Plus, since I'm in town, I wouldn't need any travel covered - a win/win. If you are a school owner and are interested, send me a DM with the day and time (either September 11 or 12) and we will get it scheduled. If you are a student that is interested in having me there, tell your coach or share this post with them. I have also been visiting Reno about once a month on other business during weekends. Any schools in the area that want to take advantage can DM as well to inquire for more details. In October, I will be in Mexico visiting the Yucatan area, checking out Tulum, Cozumel, Merida, Valladolid, and Isla Mujeres. I will be on vacation mode here, but if there is an academy in the area that wants to setup a seminar during the second half of October, DM me and we can see if we can make something happen. Finally, I will be hosting my next BJJ Retreat in Las Vegas from November 2 to the 8th. We are currently offering nearly 1/3 off the registration fee for our early bird special, which ends in September. This is just a couple of days before the IBJJF Masters Worlds championships here in Las Vegas, so it would be a good way to ease into that while having a great time. So make sure to register before you miss that deadline of August 31st at https://BJJretreat.com https://www.instagram.com/p/CS9uJJpP84l/?utm_medium=tumblr

My first batch of ground elk that I processed from my hunt. Browned some onions, garlic, salt, pepper, cumin and some bone broth to go with it with tortilla chips, and it came out great. It's pretty cool to be able to have hunted, processed, and cooked your own meat. 😁 #hunting #hunter #elkhunt #elkhunting #elk https://www.instagram.com/p/CSbD1Iwro-9/?utm_medium=tumblr

I got so busy I forgot to post some of the action from my last camp here in Las Vegas. I had a great time hosting it here in my home, and we got to do a lot while in town. Here are some of the activities we got into, with a mix of action and relaxation. 👍 Next one is going to be from November 2-9th, just before the IBJJF Masters world's here in Vegas. So it would be a good time to join and get two great events back to back. Just visit https://BJJretreat.com and score 30% off for registrations this month https://www.instagram.com/p/CSVYpc2FuBf/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hunting kept me lean. At 204lbs this morning. Still following the diet, although at camp it was hard to be strict, but in principal I still made all my meals protein focused. That and about 5 miles hiking daily with a backpack for a few days kept me solid. This was a short trip though (only 5 days), but even so my legs and feet were getting banged up 😂. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSRr1gVn1nI/?utm_medium=tumblr
