Erin Hill + Nina Vroemen
Official picture included in Deep Gazing, art show at PHI. The Sisters of the Celestial Order of Nephology (the study of clouds) is an interdisciplinary performance project by Horizon Factory (Erin Hill and Nina Vroemen). Forming in 2019, during a dance residency at Studio 303 (Montreal), the fictitious, pseudo-sect of two, blue cloaked, atmospheric-nuns were called by the unseizable state of clouds and the ephemeral narratives that form them. These narratives are personal, environmental, futuristic, and potential warning signs. The Sisters engage across multiple mediums and disciplines, including performance, video, radio, workshops, and writing. In 2024, they printed the prototype for their forthcoming publication Deep Gazing. They have presented their work at RURART (Cookshire-Eaton, 2020), at the Fonderie Darling (Montreal, 2020), at the Third Space Gallery (Saint John, New Brunswick, 2021), at Artscape Gibraltar (Toronto, 2022), at CCOV (Montreal, 2022), at SummerWorks (Toronto, 2023), at Eastern Bloc (Montreal, 2023), at the Performing Arts Forum (Saint-Erme, France, 2023), and at PIQUE (Ottawa 2024). The Sisters of the Celestial Order of Nephology (the study of clouds) is an interdisciplinary performance project by Horizon Factory (Erin Hill and Nina Vroemen). Deep Gazing, a term coined by The Sisters, is a practice for people to attune with their environments. Inspired by Pauline Oliveros’s Deep Listening work, it bridges cloud identification and forecasting with tools for creating personal and intimate links with the weather. A storm does not end, but continues to move, to shift, and influence other systems. Deep Gazing is a timely practice that has helped The Sisters think through what it means to be a part of a complex, interconnected world and how to attune to the environment sensorially, sensually, and spiritually. Within the context of the PHI Montréal residency, we—The Sisters of the Celestial Order of Nephology—offer our celestial services.

Forestare
Music Art videos created for the classical ensemble, Forestare. Shot at Arsenal Montreal during the David Spriggs exhibit. Musical videos are reinterpretation of Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint.
Guitar ensemble Forestare, composed of 12 guitars and double bass, has already existed for 16 years. Since its inception, the ensemble has participated in the creation of close to 50 original works and has adapted nearly another 100 for its unique make-up. In doing this, the ensemble has created the largest repertoire of music for guitar orchestra in the world.
The artwork of David Spriggs lies in a space between the 2 and 3 dimensions. In his work he explores phenomena, space-time and movement, colour, visual systems and surveillance, the strategies and symbols of power, and the thresholds of form and perception. Spriggs is known internationally for his unique large-scale 3D ephemeral-like installations that use a technique he pioneered in 1999 layering transparent images.
Arsenal Contemporary Art is a private contemporary art and cultural initiative founded by patrons Pierre and Anne-Marie Trahan. It is devoted to the support, promotion and development of Canadian contemporary art through diverse endeavors, including the showcase of Canadian contemporary artists, alongside international artists, in exhibitions that are curated in-house and by invited international curators. Opened in 2011 in Montreal, Arsenal Contemporary Art has since expanded to include locations in Toronto (2013) and New York (2017). Although some exhibitions travel from one location to another, the programming of each location is tailored to its respective community, space and audience.

As the Apple brand grew, the need for a confidential, creative incubator with a dedicated team focused solely on game-changing work became more evident. In 2006, TBWA\Media Arts Lab was born. Today, Media Arts Lab has seven dedicated global offices and 20 network offices around the world.  Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Media Arts Lab is housed in a unique 50,000 square foot space, hidden in plain sight from the outside world.

Tanya Tagaq
Design and artistic direction for Tanya Tagaq’s official website [2005-2007]. Tanya appears on both of Bjork’s Medulla, an album paying tribute to the human voice & the soundtrack to the film, Drawing Restraint 9.
Inuit throat singer and artist Tanya Tagaq won the Polaris Prize for best Canadian album in 2014, for Animism. Those who thought she had then made her definitive artistic statement are in for a surprise. Also in for a shock are those who thought international success, playing to major festivals and packed houses all over the world, would lead to a mellower sound, or a more laid back approach. Tagaq follows up Animism with Retribution, an even more musically aggressive, more aggressively political, more challenging, more spine tingling, more powerful masterpiece.
