The deep dive into the archives continues-
In the early-1980s, I made a project for myself of photographing at the not-that-far-away-at-the-time Bronx and Philadelphia Zoos on occasional weekday mornings. This pleasant practice went on for several years.
During one early visit to the Philadelphia Zoo, I spent a good deal of time in the primate house, which was mostly empty of school groups and other visitors at the time. I remember finding the experience of spending time with an individual animal, and watching it so intently and intimately, to be very moving.
This is the final picture in a long sequence of pictures I made of this noble creature on that Wednesday morning in 1982. It breaks my heart to look at it now.
This article appeared in local newspapers on Christmas morning, 1995:
"A fire in the primate building of the Philadelphia Zoo during the early morning hours of December 24 killed 23 animals, including a family group of six lowland gorillas, a family group of three orangutans, four white-handed gibbons, and ten lemurs. All were members of endangered species. The animals died in their sleep from smoke inhalation (carbon monoxide poisoning); none were burned."
A photograph is a memory of—and a memorial to—life.

This is the view upwards from the back deck of our house. I'm fortunate to live in such beautiful surroundings!
