PERFUMES OF ARABIA; The Culture Obsession with the Tragic Female Icon. Its Throwback Tuesday. Here's a little montage of my work from Degree Year, and some clippings from my notebook. Its very fitting one as it's a year since I graduated (well, technically I didnt, I was in NY at the time), but I have been thinking a lot about Pop Culture lately. It's no secret, I am a Pop Culture Nerd, which is what inspired me to do this project in my Final Year. A character piece, looking at the female celebrity figures we build up to tear down and kick while they're down. Personally, I found them to be modern day tragedies, stripping them of their humanity until they are nothing but a sexed up shell of a person on the verge of self destruction. What does have to do with me thinking a lot about pop culture? Well, this. I find it interesting that people selectively choose their celebrity outrages, depending on which is trendy to do. All the gals and the gays posted #FreeKeska when she spoke about the abuse she experienced at the hands of her producer, and it was nice to see Demi Lovato wished a speedy recovery during her relapse... ...but here we are, two years later, all the same gays are screaming about Kim Petras, even though she works with the same abuser that they stood against, I've yet to see anyone share a Britney Spears post that also mentions the facts that she has no legal rights, is controlled by her failed business man father who has two restraining orders against him by her children and was forced into a mental institution for standing her ground. More recently, no one has mentioned Taylor Swifts current situation in regards to her artistry being robbed from her by someone who was never involved in her career and wants her to shut up and be a good girl.
