Last month on Tumblr, we gave a behind-the-scenes look at the Brooklyn Museum’s Mesoamerican objects featured in Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving. Now that the exhibition is open (with extended hours!) we can share some of their journey from lab to display. As we discussed before, conservators took photographs, inspected, and if necessary, treated or oversee the fabrication of custom mounts. (For more in depth details on our mount-making process read this post from last summer)
When it comes time for objects to be installed in their display cases, often conservators work with the museum’s art handlers to make finishing touches and adjustments. On the left, you see our objects as they entered the conservation lab. Several, including two Colima figures, this Olemic figure, and this Nayarit Female Figure, are laying flat since they cannot stand upright on their own. On the right, they are mounted and installed in the gallery.

For objects that don’t have mounts, pieces of Mylar or Melinex, an archival grade polyester sheeting, were cut to match the footprint of each object. The Mylar acts as a barrier layer between the objects and the shelves. In the during-installation image on the left, you can see it under the greenstone necklace while an art handler determines the angle of the mask to its left.

Ideally the mounts and mylar disappear once everything has been installed, although in some cases this isn’t possible because of the size or shape of an object.

While Kahlo’s paintings and costumes may take center stage in this exhibition, the New York Times described the important role the collection objects played. “In one gallery, the curators set out to re-create the vibe of Kahlo and Rivera’s home. Azure-painted walls and a case of Mesoamerican ceramic and stone sculptures and vessels, from the Brooklyn Museum’s permanent collection, evoke its spirit” said Rebecca Kleinman.

The exhibition is only up through May 12, so be sure to come and walk through our Blue House gallery yourself.

What happened to Maura Murray?
At 21 years old, Maura Murray disappeared on February 9th 2004, and to this day her whereabouts remain unknown. At the time of her disappearance, Maura was a nursing student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA.
On the afternoon of February 9th, Maura contacted her university supervisor and professors to inform them that she would be taking some time off due to a family emergency. However, her relatives were later unable to confirm this claim. Later that evening, a car accident was reported to the authorities by a member of the public, and the vehicle involved was traced back to Maura. The passing motorist who reported the collision asked Maura at the scene if she needed any help, but she declined and then vanished before the police arrived.
Based on these strange circumstances, and also the lack of evidence to suggest that somebody else was involved, it has since been determined that Maura Murray wanted to disappear voluntarily. It was found that Murray had packed a variety of items to suggest she was going on a trip: clothing, toiletries, textbooks, and contraceptive pills. Upon later inspection of her dorm room, the police discovered that Maura had packed up most of her belongings into boxes, further indicating that she did not intend to stay. Located amongst her possessions was an email printed out to Maura’s boyfriend, which highlighted that she was experiencing some relationship troubles.
After driving away from her university campus, CCTV footage has also identified that Maura stopped to withdraw hundreds of dollars in cash from an ATM machine, and also purchase a wide range of alcoholic drinks from a convenience store. When her vehicle was found crashed, traces of the alcohol were found on the seats and it had been left behind with the rest of her belongings.
Although a voluntary disappearance has been suggested, it cannot be ruled out that something more sinister may have happened. Maura’s father saw her only the day before, and he reported that Maura seemed perfectly normal; she certainly had no known incentive to willingly leave her family, studies and life behind. Maura may have intended to disappear only temporarily, but it is now almost 15 years since and there has been no trace of her.
It was dark and cold that February night, and a snowstorm was incoming- it can’t be entirely ruled out that she potentially became lost and fell victim to a serious crime, or an accidental death occurred as a result of dangerous weather conditions. Alternatively, Maura may still be hiding away and is opting to not be located.

16 year-old Aranda Briones has been missing since January 13th, 2019. The teen left her Moreno Valley, California home that day after telling her family that she was going to spend the day with a male friend from school. Aranda never returned home that evening and has not been seen or heard from again. The male friend she was with stated that he dropped Aranda off at Moreno Valley Community Park between 6 and 6:30pm. However, investigators looked at footage of the park, and Aranda was not seen at any point that day. Additionally, the male friend said that he saw Aranda get into a four-door grey sedan and driving away. Aranda’s family reportedly does not know anybody with a car of that description, and said car was not seen on the park’s surveillance footage either.
According to Aranda’s brother, her Snapchat map feature placed her phone at a completely different location on the evening of January 13th. A female friend reportedly told Aranda’s family that she noticed Aranda’s Snapchat was showing her in Rubidoux that evening. When the friend texted Aranda to ask what she was doing there, Aranda’s phone was abruptly shut off. The phone has not been turned on again.
The investigation into Aranda’s disappearance has picked up quickly. Moreno Valley police began investigating a day after she was last seen. Now, the FBI and Riverside County sheriff’s human trafficking task force have joined the search. Investigators have not revealed the name of the male friend Aranda was last seen with, but it is clear that Aranda’s family is suspicious of his story.
A community tip line has been set up for anyone with information about Aranda. If you have any information that could help the investigation, please call the tip line at 951-247-8700, or call the Moreno Valley police at 951-486-6731.
