It’s a quiet shift, isn’t it?

There’s an unusual stillness in the air. A certain lack of loud voices, and characters he’d come to expect seeing in the hallways and waiting room. 

There’s no short Irish woman, nor seven foot tall giant, nor angry redhead, nor caffeine addict, nor man ridden with bulletholes followed by a swarm of agents, nor sullen kid breaking the vending machine every five minutes. 

It’s quiet, isn’t it? 

Hm.

They were updated and relieved that things had gone well, but before the doctor could hurry off to his next patients, he caught up with them on their way, letting Darcy and Magni go on ahead into JJ’s room.

“Hey uh, Doctor Shepler,“ there was nervousness about him as he took quick steps towards the other, his gaze still alert when he looked back, making sure the others were out of earshot. Then his words poured out of his mouth as quickly as he thought them. 

“I wanted to, uhm, ask, or just talk to you- apologize- I heard what happened, with uh, what she did, ambushing you like that. I had no idea.. I found out after, and- Thank you. For still treating her. I mean I know it’s your job, you took an oath or whatever. But uh, she shouldn’t have done that.“

He saw the man approach, and was anticipating maybe a few more questions about Kelly, but then the track of this conversation grew further from where he might’ve expected it to go.  

“Oh, you heard about that.” His eyebrows rose in surprise. 

To be honest, he hadn’t had much of a clue what Doctor Kelly had been talking about in their brief confrontation before being elbowed in the face, and stomped in the foot. 

“Well, listen, there’s really no need for you to apologize.” She’d already given him one, so.. “I wondered what that was about. She said something about me being irresponsible and..” and not that handsome. sad. 

��Anyway, it’s all forgotten.” Mostly. He certainly had no plans of pursuing any assault charges, but all of his conversations with the woman were now held at a very safe distance in the room.

What an oddly familiar setting this was, he thought, quick to approach the doctor. Nothing but the person lying hurt in that room had changed, not the people waiting or the doctor approaching them or the setting they were in. 

“Yeah,“ 

Perhaps they needed to take a hard look at themselves. This wasn’t normal.

“How is she?“

“She’s awake.” Was the first thing he said. Get that out of the way before he got into the rest of it, the things that could be a little harder to hear. 

“She had a hairline impact fracture, and there was some tissue damage. We want to keep her overnight, keep an eye on how she heals after surgery.” He explained. 

“You’re good to go in and chat, though. She’s been asking about all of you.”

She got up from the uncomfortable chair as soon as she saw the doctor walk into the room. She stayed quiet though, just listening to what had happened to her and what had been done. She was fine and that was all that mattered. 

“She’d only stay one day, right? Then she can go home.” No one liked to stay in the hospital. There was a little smile on her lips though, of course JJ would be asking for them.

“Hopefully, yes.” That depended on a few things, but if her recovery went well then they would feel confident to let her go within a day or two. “You should go ahead in, I’m sure you’re anxious to see her.”

The look on seven-foot-tall man’s face told him that he was paused to run into the room, at first opportunity. “I won’t hold you up. 

Darcy, Josh.” He nodded to the both of them, giving the two his signiture smile. “Bad circumstances, but nice to see you again.

“You’re all here for Doctor Kelly?” 

The doctor stepped out of the room with his clipboard, toward the cluster of people who had been waiting, asking questions. An odd group to be sure, but one that was entirely.. familiar to him. 

Darcy, that was the name of the shortest one with the glasses. Hadn’t he just treated her for her injuries a month ago? And, the tall one, Joseph, he’d come in here with a series of his own bullet wounds.

The seven foot tall giant, he’d definitely seen before. 

Huh. Small world.

She shifted herself in the bed again, trying to sit up more and look at least a bit dignified and failing. Was she safe? JJ took a slow deep breath through her nose and held it, swallowing. cracking popping flames  

gunfire raining down. Gabe. she needed to keep him safe. She realized she was staring off into space and shook herself back, squinting for a moment. oh her head hurt.

She swallowed again. He was looking much better than the last time she’d seen him. “I…yes yes of course I’m safe. As safe as anyone else living in this crazy place.” she said, focusing on her raised leg underneath the blanket. If she was betrayed by the heart monitor beeping faster, she gave no sign. 

“Listen…I need to apologize to you. For ya know…” she winged her elbow up, jiggling the I.V. pole as she did so. “I….I don’t know what came over me and I’m sorry. Thank you for being the bigger person and.” she paused, trying to focus. “for treating me. Are my friends okay?”

Why would no one tell her…she’d keep asking or go find out herself.

He nodded at the apology, and gave a polite smile, but left it at that. 

What would he have done otherwise, turn the patient away. “Your friends are alright. They’re all out there, waiting to see you.” Derrick nodded toward the door. 

He had no real choice but to take her at her word that she would be safe in leaving. The young man who’d come in with her and also been treated, had refused to give up any information as well. What had happened?

“I’ll tell them to come on in, if that’s alright with you?”

She was lying there staring at the ceiling, trying not to fall asleep again, eyelids drooping. JJ startled at her name and groaned under her breath.  “-yes, I am now.” she said, shifting in the uncomfortable bed.  Her heart sank when she recognized the voice and she let out a sigh, but she needed to see his face to be sure. “Are you here to tell me I can go home?” At the very least he could tell her how her friends were.

He recognized the woman. It was hard to forget a face when at first meeting they managed to stomp on your foot, elbow you in the face, and insult you all in one go. 

Still. He’d taken an oath to treat anyone who came into his care, and so he had with no reservation. He only kept in mind now that she was awake from surgery, to keep a good, safe distance from the other side of the room. 

“Well, your surgery went well. So far, it’s all looking great. Provided your stay off that leg, I don’t see too many reasons to keep you much longer.” He noted. 

“-But before I give the all-clear I do want to ask,” Not for details as to how exactly this had happened, but for honesty, “Are you safe to leave the hospital, Doctor?”

“Doctor Kelly.” Came a gentle knock at the side of her door, the doctor not yet stepping inside. “Are you awake?”

“I was just attacked.”

Derrick held the paper towel against his nose. “Security’s after her. I’m fine, I just..” He sighed, a moment of prolonged meaningful eye contact with his ex-wife. 

“What happened to you? You’ve changed, Melody.”

She may be slight, and small, but she was used to keeping up with much taller people and she ran a few miles most days.

So getting some distance between that git of a man and herself was pretty easy. JJ turned left and went down a service stairwell, flying quickly down the stairs and out into the empty corridor.  She was seething, swearing and let out a frustrated groan before she swung around and smashed her fist into the wall.

So much for a coffee run.

Shit, was his nose bleeding? 

There were still more patients he needed to get to, and he could still feel the pain radiating off his face where he’d been elbowed. 

He pointed again in the direction the woman had fled and watched the security guards chase after to the staircase. What the hell had that all been about?

Before she could notice that the smile had gone and she’d probably hit a nerve, he was asking if they knew each other again. Really?

Did he….. JJ sucked in a breath and reacted. She slammed her sneakered heal down on his an elbow arced up to catch his face as he curls down. “You’re not only a bloody irresponsible doctor, you’re also vain as fuck. You’re not that handsome!” she hissed as more coffee sloshed over her shirt and she turned to stomp off down the hall.

Suddenly her sneaker came down hard on his foot and just as he bent down, where he might have been met with an apology he’s met with an elbow to the face. 

“--Jesus!” 

Hands flew to his nose, blinking rapidly as his eyes teared up in automatic response to the stunning pain of being struck. He can make out her saying something about being an irresponsible doctor- 

      ‘ --not that handsome!’ 

Wh- What??? 

“Security.” He called, shaking his head and hissing quietly at the pain throbbing across his face, he pointed in the direction that the woman was stalking down.

Her eyes narrowed at the gleam reflecting off his teeth. This actually worked on women? Is that how he got everyone to fawn over him-Just exude charm? “Yes…the cafeteria” she said, flatly. Why was she feeling the need to spare him from what she needed to say to him. This…this careless excuse for a doctor.  

“I’ve got it Doctor Shepler. You know…most people look before they walk into a busy corridor. Are you always this negligent?” JJ glanced around her. There were a few nurses that had stopped to look, wave at him and continue on with their assigned duties and she rolled her eyes.

The woman was clearly in no mood, so he guessed he’d just be on his-- 

  Excuse me? 

He frowned deeply at her use of the word negligent, as well as the fact that she seemed to know exactly who he was. She did look familiar. 

“I’m sorry, do we..” He neglected to finish that sentence, having made the mistake before and ended up with more than one crisp slap across the face. 

“I’ll just, leave you to it then.” He frowned, and using one of the napkins he’d brought over to dab at the coffee that had gotten on him.

She took a deep breath through her nose, held it and blew it slowly out her mouth as she watched the man go and get paper towels. Why did this man make her so angry?

“Thank you,” she said, gritting her teeth. She wasn’t sure which was worse-almost literally bumping into Doctor Shepler, the scalding coffee or the wasted coffee.

JJ poured the dregs of the coffee left in the other cups, replacing the two remaining lids. Well, at least she tried. She was having trouble coming up with something to say that she wouldn’t regret later.

“...Let me buy you another one.” Derrick sighed, and offered the woman his usual TV-smile. “Where did you get these, the cafeteria?” He asked. 

That was a lot of coffee, he assumed some of it was for the large group that she had come in with. He certainly hoped none of it was for the patient. “I’ll help you carry them back.” He offered.

"Those shows are so unrealistic.

Like that guy, Derek Shepherd? Come on. I don't know any doctors who are like that."
