For a sober guy I sure like to act like a degenerate drunk. Here I am sleeping in the middle of a walking path in Denver after watching the Perseid meteor shower. About 100 people had to tip toe around me while I periodically jumped to attention like a bridge troll and proclaimed: “If you want to pass, you must answer me these questions three,” and demanded that people solve riddles. “What’s large enough to be everywhere at once, but small enough to fit in the palm of your hand?” (See if you can figure out the answer 😉). I genuinely think I traumatized some people, but the meteors looked good! (at Green Mountain Hiking Trail) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1ezFfHgV2C/?igshid=1d4oa7k4y2f8n

Sometimes Plan B stands for Plan Better. We came out to Denver to walk with Mike Posner, but a baby rattlesnake totally Posner-blocked us, sending the poor man into the ER. Apparently baby rattlesnakes don’t know how to control their venom yet, so they deliver the whole load at once. The same can be said about human babies. But anyway, we felt some things, and then dove head first into a documentary we’re doing about the decriminalization of psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”) in Denver. Remember what happened when Colorado became the first state to legalize weed? Remember the domino effect that started with that single vote? The same thing is happening with mushrooms, ayahuasca, MDMA, ketamine, ibogaine, peyote, and various other psychedelics that have been pushed underground since the Manson family put an end to the summer of love and the counter culture in the 1970’s. What’s happening RIGHT NOW took decades of careful planning, but it’s really happening, and Kevin Matthews (pictured here) is the man who helped push the first domino. We’re following this story as it develops in Colorado and California (it’s on the ballot for 2020), and we’re going to produce a feature length documentary, as well as our own episode of Self Help Me, where we experiment with mushrooms and the treatment options currently available. Get ready to see what a full trip looks like. This brings together all of the areas I’m most passionate about: mental health, the prison system, addiction relief, and the expansion of consciousness through any avenue available, and unlike with marijuana, most people aren’t very familiar with the impact psychadelics can have on an individual and the people around them. This documentary will share that information: the good, the bad, and the ugly. If you know anyone who works in these growing fields, don’t hesitate to reach out! We’ll talk to anyone. So far we’re interviewing local news broadcasters, psychotherapists, nurses, mushroom cultivators, and the Christian opposition. “The only way to understand a cube is to see it from all angles.” And mushrooms are a hell of a cube. https://www.instagram.com/p/B1KI4xpg5NL/?igshid=sb1cyqv3p0uz

Caught an advanced screening of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at the Cinerama (which is featured in the movie). I went last week without realizing I’d bought it for the following Sunday, then I came to find out Quentin Tarantino introduced that first showing and was drunk as hell. Seeing a drunk Tarantino is on my bucket list so that was a painful missed opportunity, but I ended up watching “Yesterday” instead. I cried muffled, masculine tears during the second half. I like this emerging genre of revisionist history films (slight spoiler...), one week you get to see a legend grow old, the next you get to see some hyper violent revenge porn. That’s a unique experience only a well-directed movie can deliver. I highly recommend both. (at The Cinerama Dome) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0jdff6AR74/?igshid=ouzojjez2flz

I rarely get political, but I’m unabashedly pro-immigration. The funny thing is, immigration is one of the few issues that unites the Left and the Right...AGAINST IT. In anonymous polls, the majority of Americans are against loosening our immigration standards. We have a tribal brain framework that protected us for thousands of years, and it tells us to distrust The Other, and to consolidate resources in our kin groups, but in this day and age, the most globalized, immigrant-friendly countries on Earth are the richest. Walk through London, NYC, Paris, Hong Kong, Berlin, Tokyo, Barcelona, and experience the reality that the richest, safest cities on Earth have the highest percentages of foreign-born citizens. We need a new paradigm. Maybe the next time you’re eating a 1 dollar taco and talking to Paco about how he started a business while raising 4 children and sending half of his income back to his family, you’ll entertain the idea, just for a second, that we started as a nation of immigrants, and we still are one. 4th or July is a perfect day to do that. I guarantee this message will rile a few feathers, even if they don’t respond, I’ve posted about my pro-immigration stance before and gotten some very negative reactions from people. Let me just say this: you want the freedom to use contraceptives, or the freedom to bear arms? I’m cool with that, but give me my right to bear immigrants. I literally want to bear them. 🐻 (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzgqQ-qAnaU/?igshid=1vv7zjq7xm7wg

The part about suicide that haunts me most is that we’re willing to do things to ourselves we couldn’t imagine doing to someone else. Who would take one of the most beloved people on Earth, kidnap them, wrap a rope around their neck, and leave them dead and alone? I can’t think of anyone besides Charles Manson, and yet that’s what so many people I love have done to themselves. How about shooting a child in front of their family? Show me a murderer that brutal. Cutting someone’s veins open, making them swallow pills one after the other until their organs fail? Pushing someone into an oncoming train? We victimize ourselves on another level. I think it’s just dawning on me that the front line for this generation isn’t in Iraq of Afghanistan, it’s in the psyche of millions of disaffected people. The war is within. I believe that part of the reason we feel so alienated is our lack of a common purpose, or a common enemy. Well guess what? We’ve got one. It’s climbing in our windows at night and killing our heroes. And how do we fight it? By being uplifting, by learning how to live a satisfying, meaningful life ourselves, so we have the time, energy, and knowledge to help others. By recognizing that we don’t suffer as much as some, and becoming a soldier. @brodyismefriend was one of the best examples of this modern day soldier I can think of, but the enemy overtook him. When it happened, it made me feel whatever country boys felt after 9/11. “I’m ready to enlist, NOW.” In a war that’s more confusing than Vietnam. My strategy is to live as close to my potential as possible, making space for others, listening, loving, sharing what I’ve learned, promoting people who fight the good fight, spreading fun and enjoyment and community, and being disciplined about cutting back the crutches that make me a strain on others. I’ll be victorious when I can look back on my life and say: “I bet I saved one, I bet someone who was going to do it, didn’t do it, because of the war I fought.” What we do matters, we have a reason to leave bed in the morning. Let’s kill this demon together [**Plays War Pigs**] YOU HAVE MY AXE!!! https://www.instagram.com/p/BzG_3etgKBG/?igshid=11m27l7cgrl69

It’s time for Monk Month. It’s time to keep the promises I made. It’s time to do the boring work that brings a dream to life. Can you wake up earlier? Can you go to bed willfully? Can you focus on the mundane? Can you work out like a warrior? Can you eat like a chemist? Can you be pulled by possibility, instead of pushed by fear? Can you sublimate your sex drive, your ego, and your infatuations, into your cause? Can you say no to anything that doesn’t contribute? Can you set expectations for the people around you? Can you start with something attainable, and then up the ante methodically every day, and every week? Can you fold your friendships into your growth? Can you give more than you take? Can you simplify? Can you compete? Can you love the process? Can you shovel the rocks every day, and watch your pile grow? And then, when there’s nothing left to shovel, can you take a moment to enjoy your accomplishment, and do it again? (at Coffee Connection) https://www.instagram.com/p/Byddqi5A9vj/?igshid=hnz25702vt9k

Our RV series is finally out on YouTube.com/TeamFriendship (link in bio)! Months in the making, this was by far the most ambitious project we’ve ever done. We learned everything from carpentry to plumbing to emotional resilience, and @imolivertang really showed himself by continuing long after everyone else had fallen off, and taking the helm of this awesome edit. We’re going to be using Shannon: The Road Boat RV to explore dozens of documentary subjects for a series called “Self Help Me.” We’re subjecting ourselves to human experiments to answer life’s greatest mystery: what ACTUALLY makes us happy. Subscribe if you want to be a part of the Team Friendship revolution! Hopefully one day, it will be televised. The greatest bromance of 2019 right here. I met @imolivertang when I was attempting to do 100 days of comedy in a row, he showed up one day, and by the end of it we had already planned a weekly vlog, sketches, and the resurrection of Team Friendship, the name I’d given to the amorphous group of friends I’d maintained while moving almost every year of my childhood. I’d overlooked Oliver at first, he was a great performer, but he preferred to quietly film our improv or listen to comedians go back and forth or edit his own projects. But he kept showing up, which is the rarest quality of an individual in LA, and so we spent the last year working almost every day on something. In that time we’ve made more than 50 videos (and 100 more for clients), we’ve reached 100s of thousands of people, we’ve been to more than a dozen states plus Mexico, we’ve had an impromptu jam session with a reggae band on LSD, we’ve rebuilt an RV from scratch, we’ve performed with our idols, we’ve overcome the social anxiety that plagued us so that we can be the center of attention without a drop of booze, and now we’re training for marathons and triathlons, exploring multi-month documentary projects, short films, and preparing for our most exciting adventure yet (to be announced). All that happened IN ONE YEAR. That’s the power of friendship. Sometimes the person who can help you the most is right in front of you. They’re the person who shows up, not the person who’s just out of reach. I declare now for all to see, by the time my birthday comes around next June, the come up of Team Friendship will be complete. We’ve got the momentum, we’ve got the tools, and now it’s so much more than me and Oliver, it’s dozens of other badasses who were tired of waiting for the perfect life to fall in their laps.
