Ikon gallery

I went and visited the Ikon gallery to help get some inspiration towards my exhibition design ideas. When I walked in to the first room of the gallery my eyes where filled with endless Colour. This exhibition display was based around rainbow colours. The bright intense tones where bursting all over the room with excitement. This was a brilliant way to instantly grab the audience’s attention. Theses brightly coloured carpets where also a part of being an Interactive element where the audience where able to slip on some shoe cover and actual physical engage with the display by walking on the carpet. This was something very unique and interesting. This exhibition also had some strings hanging from the ceiling. This gave a different layer and depth in to the display and a very creative way to hang objects. The overall use of space was good with plenty of room to walk amongst the displays. This was genuinely a brilliant exhibition making you excited to see what's next.

Ikon projection display

When I visited the Ikon gallery one of the rooms was full with a Projection display. This projection was very simple but effective. It was placed in a small Closed off box room with modest white walls. There was no sound to the rolling imagery being shown but you could hear the clicking on the ancient projection which helped give an old fashioned feel. The backdrop being white worked well against the images being shown. The images where each on the screen for only a few seconds each and would after 3 minutes start to repeat. There was also a bench if people wanted to sit down and enjoy the moving slides. This shown that simple is sometimes key and you don’t want to overpower the narrative.

Children interactive station

I came across that Birmingham museum had a huge range of Interactive learning stations mostly for kids. These where from digital to physical educational tasks and puzzles. Having theses in place at the museum helps to make the overall museum and learning about the historical facts more interesting and fun. They would be learning while playing making their time memorable. They would be able to link the task/games to the writing and information given this makes it easier to understand. In the museum there was also a soft toy Play area for kids. This is brilliant so that the kids have something to do while their parents are looking at the exhibitions. Therefore the parents would not get distracted and can get the most out of the museum.

Projection sculpture piece

Also while in Birmingham's museum I came across this very inventive and exciting Projection sculpture piece. I liked that you could see the outside of the piece and how it was made/ put together and this appeared to be very simple with rectangle shaped boards being placed at different Angles to create this inner cover shape. Not only was this Sculpture piece very engaging just by its shape but how the projection was displayed in a 360 viewing form. This is very creative and stimulating making you feel as if you are in the film by the sound and imagery taking over all of your scenes. There was also a seating area where you could comfortable sit and watch. I strongly really liked this over all concept of displaying a piece of work as it was very different and something I have not seen before but also very attractive and appealing for the viewer. The overall concept works really well.

Displaying information

Birmingham's museum and art gallery had some very Interesting and creative ways of displaying information to the viewer. They did this by using a selection of Interactive technology screens where you are able to engage and click/select different information you want to learn about. This worked alongside a giant scale model where a Combination of lights, sound, text and imagery where all mixed in to one. This made the piece more fun and interesting to learn about for the viewer. Having multiple way of learning on hand such as sound, text and imagery this helps the viewer find the best way that suites them. Making the experience more memorable.

Arromanches 360 cinema

Also while in France and we got to visit the Arromanches 360 cinema. Located on the Arromanches clifftops, the Arromanches 360 Circular cinema dominates the remnants of one of the two artificial Mulberry harbours set up by the Allies. This inventive 360 cinema experience lets the Sound and imagery take over all of your senses by the room being completely filled with projection and movement. It helps to transport you in to a different world of wonder by you feeling as if you are in the film. This is an overall Unique experience and has an impact on your personal emotions and reactions by you feeling so engaged and involved. This was a brilliant experience to be involved with and will definitely help me when planning my own exhibition design. I know that the projection and movement really helps to engage the viewer and make the overall involvement more excitable.

American Cemetery at Omaha Beach

In 2012 I went on a school trip to France and we was able to go and visit the Normandy American Cemetery and Memoria. This was a beautiful World War II cemetery and memorial that honours American troops who died in Europe during World War II. Almost 9,400 are buried with in theses grounds. This cemetery covers 172 acres of land.
The cemetery is located on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach which is one of the landing beaches of the Normandy Invasion. This definitely helps immediately give a deeper meaning and better understanding to the subject for the viewers. People are able to walk around and easily comprehend and connect. I felt that the Impact hits you straight away when you are stood in the middle facing all of the crosses. There seemed to be Rows and rows that where never ending. I also felt that the layout and design of the cemetery doesn't over power the narrative with it being very simple but powerful. The rows of crosses tells a thousand stories. By visiting this cemetery it has opened up my eyes to how simple something can be but still tell such a strong and clear narrative.

The Crystal Maze

The Crystal Maze is a British game show where a team of contestants take on a range of challenges set within a maze of four time zones. The contestants win a time crystal for each challenge they successfully complete and slowly start to move time zone throughout the game. when the team reach the centrepiece of the Maze "The Crystal Dome“ the team must then work together collecting a certain amount of gold tokens to win a prize at the end. The allotted time inside the Dome is determined by the number of crystals they successful won in the previous zones and challenges.
This tv show is a style of Escape room where you are completely physically involved and have to work as a team to solve the problems to leave each time zone. The Crystal maze is like a real live video game where you come across challenges you wouldn’t in normal day life. By this being an Interactive experience the contestants are fully engaged and letting their imagination run free. Everything from the set design to having costumes and even having a live actor for the presenter in full character really helps to bring the overall idea together and make it as realistic as possible. I will have to consider all of these different elements when trying to create my exhibition as this will help me transform the original V&A in to something completely unique.
