Greater Arid Land Katydid (Neobarrettia spinosa), male, family Tettigoiidae, Central TX, USA
Omnivorous (feeding on leaves and predatory on invertebrates and small vertebrates).
They are actually a predator of low nesting songbirds!
Some individuals have red eyes, so another name for this species is the "Red-eyed Devil".

I love when games have a protagonist with a backstory that doesn't really jive with the actual gameplay and it just kinda makes it seem like there's something wrong with them. Like Gordon Freeman is a 27 year old theoretical physicist and he holds grenades like he's been waiting his entire life to pull the pin on one. what did he see in his postdoc

#037 - #038. The Vulpix line originates from deserts, and their presence is said to turn any forest they settle in into arid wastelands. To prevent this, people build shrines and place offerings to quell their spirits.
A Vulpix can be aged by the number of tails, but Ninetales's age is determined by the length of their tail braid
Sponsored by @solluxofrose, design process undercut
I know the line is based on red foxes, but i based them on rupell's fox, a thin desert fox species. I decided to start with study their face structure and body shapes to start:
Tumblr media
Canines are always super tricky for me, but i really like the shape of these guys and their lanky body structures
I started drawing their designs on digital this time, and while vulpix's was pretty straight forward, I took a bit to figure out the tails for ninetales. drawing 9 tails while still keeping a recognizable silhouette is rough
Tumblr media
I decided to go with the braid, as I think it keeps the thin silhouette flowing better, and it felt like an interesting progression to the curled vulpix tail: both pokemon have their tails tied in a way, but vulpix has a more jovial, baby version, while ninetales seems to intentionally tie their tails in a braid as a show of control.

Japanese Giant Salamander (Andrias japonicus), family Cryptobranchidae, endemic to Japan
One of the largest amphibians in the world, growing to a length of 1.5 m (~5 ft).
Vulnerable
"During the survey in Nov, we found 28 Japanese Giant Salamanders within only 1km range. The largest salamander we found on the day was 108cm (first photo). He has been constantly caught for 38 years since he was caught first time. The first time his measurement was 83cm. Researchers expect he should be at least 70 years old now. The second photo is a medium-sized specimen with characteristic colour of this species, light yellow background with obvious black spots. The research centre has been conducting the salamander's survey for many years. But they still need financial support for the activity.
