I was just thinking about 20,000 Digi-Leagues Under the Sea. That episode was always special to me as a kid, since it was the only episode with an honesty moral I'd seen that was actually HONEST about honesty. That sometimes you wouldn't want to lie, but with outside circumstances being the way they are, you'd be pressured to do so. And that lying isn't great, but is warranted if the consequences of not lying are bad enough. As a kid who was blunt and honest to a fault, it resonated with me.
I remember a lot of people used to criticize (and perhaps still do) that episode for, as they saw it, going against the kind of moral teachings that a kids' show ought to be teaching -- but one thing I've always appreciated about 02, and especially moreso that I'm an adult and have firsthand experienced how impractical those stock moral lessons are when applied ad absurdum, is that not only was it completely correct, it actually stated in direct words what the right way to approach it should be. Because it's already one thing to say "unfortunately, you do have to lie, sometimes," but instead of just leaving it at it being more complicated than that, it properly describes what the point is and why it's normally important to not lie. The end goal is always to not hurt people, so most of the time you should be honest because lying would hurt people, but in those times when not lying would hurt more people than it helps, then there's no point in sticking so stubbornly to that supposed moral principle.
I really love how much of a pragmatic series 02 is, but its approach to pragmatism is what I call "kind pragmatism" -- that is to say, it questions the limits of moral principles, but does so in a way that simply reminds us all that we hold those principles in the first place for good reason, and therefore if we break them, it still needs to be for that good reason first and foremost. Everything from the question of forgiveness/punishment, to the issues surrounding Iori's stubborn morality and view of good/evil, to even the debates about mercy killing and the eventual need to kill enemies, is all answered with the counterargument "then, whom would this actually help, and whom would it hurt?" Because in the end, if you're doing something purely for the sake of morality on principle, the only person getting anything out of it is yourself for supposedly being morally upright, and so in a sense that's actually selfish. But it's hard to realize when many of us just really want to do the right thing, so it's always important to be reminded of what it means to do the right thing in the first place, and how we can approach things in a way that helps all of us.
