Translation notes on Shinya’s interview in Rock and Read 063

He always asks the band before making any public appearances, such as in the variety show where he was sent to work in an insect shop, or when he took part in the Los Angeles Anime Expo fashion show as a model thanks to his contact with h.NAOTO. He finds that this is normal business etiquette.

He is wary of not disturbing or stretching what is constituted in the band’s image. It is not so much that the band is strict, but his own consciousness.

Everything he does is just showing his inner nature. And whenever he makes an appearance, it is because he was offered to, never because he initiated it.

Shinya was sad and thought about leaving the band when they decided not to do makeup anymore because for him, when he started in a Visual Kei band, he had promised himself to lead this life with makeup until the day he died, to truly embrace it. He was taken aback when, after Rinkaku, Kyo just showed up and started using makeup again for the band’s promotional photoshoots. There had been no forewarning or discussion about it within the band.

Dir en grey has received tons of offers to play at anime conventions in the world…….! Always refusing them hah.

On the topic of Instagram, Shinya likes that you can read people’s comments to your pictures. He feels like he is promoting himself more to the world, this way.

When he participated in that variety show, someone behind the Cheburashka mascot in Russia got some merchandise to be sent to Shinya, from Japan but still directly from someone in that entourage.

When he was young, he used to write down gags from comedy shows on television and he would replicate them, with the movements and everything, at school to make people laugh. He was a funny person and, as he became an adult, he gradually changed and started listening to people more rather than want to talk about himself all the time.

However, since he started playing drums when he was that young character, now he feels that when he goes on stage, he is not being himself and has to consciously change his personality as a drummer. There is no ceremonious process of doing it though, as he was quite happy sleeping until two hours before a show abroad and having little time to prepare once he woke up.

Whenever he is on tour, Shinya always visits local shops in search of some Cheburashka items, even keychains. He is filled with joy when he does find something.

He even wants to look at the stock sold in train stations, like when the band and staff leave at a Shinkansen station, but seeing as he cannot do it then, he travels with the band to their destination, then takes a taxi back to the station, buys a fare ticket to get inside and, on his own, he tours the shops there.

He was not even that interested in Cheburashka in the beginning, but later, it sounds like the thrill of trying to find all the merchandise for something that is not super popular is what got him hooked, and now he considers himself a fan for the rest of his life.

When he was little, he used to collect Bikkuriman stickers and was able to fully complete his collection, which was apparently “1 rank higher” than other students in his school.

Shinya’s parents used to run a snack store, even from their basement once.

He was enrolled in cram school during elementary, which he hated because he dislikes studying hard. He went from being at the top of A Class to being in B months later, then in C, and D, and E… Until his parents gave up and realised that he would not be following the educational course they had hoped for him.

Actually, he does not hate studying, he just hates being forced or expected to. He liked studying English and Chinese on his own.

Shinya did graduate from high school though, but then stopped all education. He still has a good relationship with his parents. He had no rebellious phase.

When Shinya ordered his first drum set, he told his parents he would become a professional before he even received it. They thought he would never be serious about it and make a career.

His inspiration in music was X Japan of course. He got invited to a show by a friend, and from that point on he spent a lot of his time on that, feeling like he was studying music hard like he never could do for school.

He had one band before Dir en grey. It was composed of three members, the two others being older than him as well. He was the only one going to the studio or club in high school uniform. And then he joined Dir en grey at 18, also the youngest, so he wonders whether he will forever hold that image of the teenager, due to the vertical hierarchy of age.

Apparently people find that ARCHE is a controversial album. It had an amazing reception in the US and in Taiwan though, which Shinya is glad for.

He was the one who chose the location of this photoshoot, Lockheart Castle. It fit into the fantasy he had in mind.

You never have to worry about Shinya neglecting Dir en grey: it remains his priority, and any other activities or appearances he makes are determined after Dir en grey’s schedule is already finalized.
