Been getting more Steven universe content here and there and it made me remember how much I liked Peridot as a kid!

Prologue

After a lot of thinking, I think I'm ready to give my initial thoughts about Nam-gyu's character in season 3. But, at first, I would like to make it clear that 1) this is just my own vision and opinion as someone who deeply cares about him and 2) that, in general, he was one of the best parts of the season to me.

In fact, I was truly enjoying all of his scenes. I thought he was being funny and charming in his own weird Nam-gyu way, especially in the two first episodes. So much that, in the end, I got surprised with how disappointed I felt with his plot once it was over. If I liked his personality and character this much, why did I feel like something was missing?

Then I realized it was not like his scenes were the problem. What was lacking for him, to me, was the context. He had everything there that made me love him in the first place (all his inferiority, his wish to be loved and to have someone's full attention, his fear of his own feelings and the fact he'll soon end up alone). But it all was presenting in a kind of... Shallow way, for the lack of a better word? In the level that I'm worried that some people will finish the season and think "yeah, Nam-gyu fully and completely hates Thanos, it's what he said so".

I missed something more emotional for him, as he's a very emotional character. Sometimes, and I hate to say this, it was like the plot was treating him as "someone who is barely human anymore" at the same time it wasn't taken seriously.

My main problem was that I was expecting something else between the moment he lost his (Thanos') cross and his death in the jump rope game. It was the perfect moment to show a new side of him. It almost happened (with him being so afraid he kept shaking and even voted to leave the games), but it didn't. Again, I wanted something more emotional: maybe a new hint of his life outside of the games; how the way he was often mistreated made him the way he is today; or really anything about the feelings he does everything to ignore.

But he just died. And it felt bad because I knew his plot was over forever. Him as a character would forever miss something
