Things I learned about today: Ancient Chinese civil and military rank badges.
“A badge featuring a bird identified the wearer as a civil official. To attain such a position required years of intense study, so birds may have been selected because of their literary associations. Each rank was represented by a different species, and while there were slight variations over time, by the Qing Dynasty the order from highest to lowest was: crane, golden pheasant, peacock, wild goose, silver pheasant, egret, mandarin duck, quail and paradise flycatcher. Civil officials sat on the emperor’s left at court functions, so their rank birds faced right towards him.”
And the embroidery work on these is incredible! So detailed…

could the yuan be accused of watering down the city's culture, by trying to fuse languages. Could be from their recent joining, this perspective toward integration of others.

Seal of the Yuan period courier station Shenshan yi 神山驛, in ‘Phags-pa seal script. Source: Huang Dun 黃惇 (ed., 1999). Zhongguo lidai yinfeng xilie 中國歷代印風系列, Yuandai yinfeng 元代印風 (Seal styles of the Yuan period). Chongqing: Chongqing chubanshe.
The ’Phags-pa script (pronounced “Phagpa”, in Chinese called Basiba zi 八思巴字 or Basiba wen 八思巴文) is a script developed to write in Mongolian language. It is an alphabetic script based on the Tibetan Brahmi alphabet. It can serve as a source for the pronunciation of Early Modern Chinese.
It is preserved in a lot of paleographic materials like monumental inscriptions (stelae), official seals, badges of rank or identification, paper currency and coins, as well as steelyard weights, but also literary sources, especially primers like the Baijiaxing 百家姓, and the dictionary Menggu ziyun 蒙古字韻.
The script was invented by 'Phags-pa (1235/39-1280, Chinese: Basiba 八思巴), a Tibetan prince and lama who was appointed national preceptor (guoshi 國師) Qubilai Qan (r. 1260-1294), the Mongol emperor of the Yuan dynasty 元 (1279-1368).
The alphabet was created in 1269 as a script for Mongolian, but also as a tool for the transcription of other languages, like Chinese, Tibetan, Sanskrit or Uighurian. The script has 41 letters (with new additions and variants up to 57) that can be combined to many hundred syllables. It is derived from the Tibetan Brahmi script, which is itself a derivate of Indic scripts.
There are, nevertheless, also some non-Tibetan elements in the 'Phags-pa script. The script has a very quadratic appearance and is therefore also called fangtizi 方體字 “square script” in Chinese.
Like in all Indic scripts, the vowel [a] is inherent in the letter and is not expressively written. There is a normal script and also some decorative scripts (in Chinese called seal script, zhuanti 篆體). The script is written in columns from left to right.
The earliest lists of the 'Phags-pa script are to be found in the calligraphy books Fashukao 法書考 and Shushi huiyao 書史會要, and in the dictionary Menggu ziyun. It became obsolete after the downfall of the Yuan dynasty in China but was much longer used in Tibet.
A study on the transciption of Chinese by the 'Phags-pa script has been made by W. South Coblin (2007). A Handbook of 'Phags-pa Chinese. Honolulu: University of Hawai’i Press.

Example of the 'Phags-pa script mentioned in the calligraphy book Fashukao 法書考 by Sheng Ximing 盛熙明 from the Yuan period.
The three columns to the right list the vowel letters, with rendering in Chinese. The rest of the listing are six groups of initial consonants, velars (yayin 牙音), dentals (chiyin 歯音), linguals (sheyin 舌音), gutturals (houyin 喉音), labials (chunyin 唇音), various sounds with no counterpart in Chinese and named “mixed guttural-lingual sounds” (rong hou-she yin 融喉舌音).
The four columns to the left is the 'Phags-pa alphabet, each letter transcribed with a Chinese character.

Example of the 'Phags-pa script mentioned in the calligraphy book Shushi huiyao 書史會要 by Tao Zongyi 陶宗儀 from the Ming period. The listing seems to be borrowed from the Fashukao.

Fashion of the twin cities, changes every week. Maybe, watercolour embroidered creatures is in, when the party arrives. Then a PC does something notable in public, their style is noticed, theyre style becomes the it thing for a week. Working its way down to simple vendors by the end of the week (cerulean blue) but by then the wealthy people have moved on.
Remember the five toed dragon for emporors, and cranes for wealthy merchants and Kirin for soilders. Could I set up a types, of Chinese animals by number of toes? Hoof=1. Split hoof= 2 tiger has 5 I think, dragon can have 6?
City of gold city of silk fashion

One year anniversary gift to my partner — the dragon from an abandoned painting of theirs was already sketched onto the canvas when it was given to me, so I decided it would be funny to turn it into a secret collab and give it back as a gift.
Materials used include acrylic paint, acrylic ink, silicone caulk, hot glue, glass eyeball cabochons, embroidery thread, various types of confetti, assorted pieces from my collection of plastic, scraps of washi tape, stick-on pearls, and an earring I found on a walk.
(And it’s also UV reactive.)

Concept: formalwear for wizards in the mode of 17th Century continental European court fashion, except instead of powdered horsehair wigs it involves elaborately curled and pomaded false beards. The best quality ones are fastened to a shoulder harness because the neck can't take the weight.

cleric of ashmodai, is spying on a knight of hearts, going to their jobs, and constantly making the couple's into paltonic friends, not romances.
Eg. Tells the shy one, you don't want to ruin the friendship do you.
Or because they are the same minority, makes fake identity as same, then hang out and calls em both cousins! Say 'im so lonely after moving here, I wish I still had all my cousin's' and he's doing that in front of everyone so it would be weird if they started dating? / Fairly convoluted, call that one a story, by the KoH explaining their bad luck!
Fuck shipping. I'm canoeing everyone now.
These two characters are in a relationship? Nah, they're friends. These two characters hate each other? What if they hung out and comforted each other instead? No romance. No sex. Just friendship.
Canoed.

morrigan like founder. Ruled the valley border and were war like, vanguard force for generations.
Priest -> trader
mogh Roth like founder. Cleaned up the mountains after the war. Wise and dutiful.
sheriff type who represents the fishing villages who could be trading hubs, but the esoteric and luxurious priesthood are isolationist. (Keeping us rural!)
Trader -> warrior
Medb like founder. Who brought in alliances by marriage, welcomed refugees. Made the flowing fields, the first fully populated country, and speed ran development. Being the mother tribe of a hundred daughter tribes.

i have a quastion ☝️ about sheng. she has really big horns, how does that work? i'd assume they're super heavy. are they kind of like bird bones with air pockets? or does she have a really strong neck? does she get neck pain from them? and (if the horns are not like bird bones) how does she balance if there's so much more weight in the back?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've seen... SO many comments and questions over how Sheng manages to live with seemingly enormous assets on her head!
As annoying as it was reading the same question over and over again and resisting the urge to say "✨ Fey magic ✨" I've come to quiet the public
