Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vol. 1 #2

The second issue striving not to lose the success of the first, is also full of events and new characters. It is reported on TV that the brilliant scientist Baxter Stockman developed special robots called Mousers to fight rodents, and April programmed them (she is not a reporter here). However, the scientist’s thoughts are not so generous, because his creations are destroying the basis of buildings and for their safety he anonymously demands money (actually, Stockman claims that he's doing it for thrill of it and not for profit). Unlike the first issue, which operated more in the genre of action packed movies about revenge and martial arts, here the narrative is more like a thriller - an implacable horde of iron murderers eating away everything in their path, a cunning plan of an evil scientist, the inability to rely on brute force only. Thanks to a sharp change in the genre, screenwriters masterfully hold readers attention and show that they can surprise, in addition, due to the specifics of the opponents, it became easier to reflect some special features of the turtles, for example, Donatello’s technical abilities which helps heroes to survive.

Fun fact - April was just April in this issue, there were simply not enough time to come up with her last name.

Второй номер, не желая растерять успех первого, преисполнен событиями и новыми персонажами. По телевизору передают, что гениальный учёный Бакстер Стокман разработал специальных роботов Маусеров для борьбы с грызунами, а вот программировала их Эйприл, которая здесь вовсе не телерепортёр. Впрочем, помыслы учёного не так великодушны, ведь его создания промышляют подкопами, разрушающими основу зданий и за их протекцию он анонимно требует деньги. В отличие от первого номера, который больше оперировал форматом боевиков про месть и восточные единоборства, здесь повествование больше похоже на триллер - неумолимая орда железных убиийц сносящих всё на своём пути, хитроумный план злого учёного по выкачиванию денег из общества (причём, Стокман утверждает, что делает это для развлечения, а не ради выгоды), невозможность положиться только на грубую силу. Благодаря резкой смене жанра сценаристы мастерски удерживают внимание и показывают, что могут удивлять, кроме того, за счёт специфики противников получается отразить некоторые особенности черепашек, например, технические способности Донателло помогают им спастись.

Забавный факт - к этому номеру Эйприл была просто Эйприл, на то чтобы придумать ей фамилию банально не хватило времени.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vol. 1 #1

The story that began in 1984 was a parody of then-popular comics, Daredevil, Ronin, and Cerebus in particular. Given that the first issue could have easily become the last, the authors decided to use their capabilities to the maximum, so we've got not just the origin story of turtles, but done in one story. Eastman and Laird manage to introduce us to Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo, their teacher Splinter, the main villain Shredder, and tell the dramatic story of confrontation between Hamato Yoshi (Splinter's owner) and Oroku Nagi (older brother of Oroku Saki, who became Shredder) and between their descendants, direct and spiritual. For those who are familiar with turtles from animated series and films only most likely will be confused, because of black-and-white art, extremely serious narration tone, battles in which turtles pierce their enemies with sword and ruthlessly throw the defeated enemy from the roof, but those were the times and the core idea.

With such a curious differences in characterization, the first issue ends, let’s see how the authors can surprise us further.

Fun fact - initially Donatello should have called Bernini.

Учитывая, что первый номер легко мог оказаться и последним, авторы решили использовать свои возможности на максимум, поэтому мы увидели не просто история происхождения персонажей, но вполне себе законченный сюжет. Истмен и Лэрд успевают за 40 страниц познакомить нас с Леонардо, Донателло, Рафаэлем и Микеланджело, их учителем Сплинтером, главным злодеем Шреддером, рассказать драматическую историю противостояния Хамато Йошм (хозяин Сплинтера) и Ороку Наги (брат Ороку Саки, ставшего Шреддером), закончившуюся сражением между их потомками, прямыми и духовными. Для тех, кто знаком с черепахами только по мультсериалам и фильмам скорее всего будет очень непривычен чёрно-белый стиль и предельно серьёзный тон повествования, сражения в которых черепашки пронзают врагов мечами и безжалостно сбрасывают поверженного врага с крыши, но такие уж были времена и первоначальная задумка.

На таком любопытном осознании различий образов и заканчивается первый номер, посмотрим чем авторы смогут удивить нас дальше.

Забавный факт - ��значально Донателло должны были звать Бернини.
