The Crest of Hope

The meaning of Hope (希望, kibou) in Digimon Adventure is nicely explained in Episode 37 of Digimon Adventure 02:

’No matter how dark, keep the light inside your heart lit. That is what it means to hold the crest of hope.’

The Crest of Hope and the Crest of Light are closely related and they both hold special powers, different from the other Crests. While Light gives life to the Digital World, it’s Hope that keeps Light from fading or losing to Darkness. Hope is also at the centre of the Digital World’s mythos — in influences the rebirth of Digimon, the way humans meet their Digimon partners, and (together with Light) is the very essence of evolution.

In Digimon Adventure (not very subtly), Hope is personified by the smallest (and apparently weakest) Chosen Child, Takaishi Takeru. With time, it is revealed that Takeru and his partner, Patamon, are actually incredibly powerful. They are literally the hope of the team — the “trump card” used when everything seems lost. It is debatable whether the true power of the Crest of Hope can only be released in desperate circumstances — i. e. when everything else has failed —, but ultimately Takeru and his Partner single-handedly defeat two of the series more powerful villains, Devimon and Piemon, and also give Yamato and Gabumon the power to warp-digivolve to Ultimate level. 

Takeru is shown to have a particularly optimistic and bright personality; he also becomes capable of showing great bravery in the face of terrible odds (such as the fight against Piemon). The line that best describes Takeru’s hopeful attitude at the end of Digimon Adventure is clear:

Symbolically, the image in the Crest of Hope can be interpreted as two different things:

The sun rising behind a mountain, which represents new beginnings; concretely, the promise of a new dawn, even during the darkest night. A visual representation of the cliché “the sun will rise tomorrow”. (Since Taichi’s crest is already a Sun, I don’t find this hypothesis very likely.) 

A shooting star, which is a streak of brightness in the night sky. Shooting stars are considered a good omen, and people traditionally “wish upon a star” (the first Digimon Adventure opening refers to this practise). Also, armour-evolutions using the Digimental of Hope are based on constellations. 

The colour of the Crest of Hope is yellow. Yellow is often associated with happiness, optimism, wealth, and sunshine. In Digimon Adventure 02, Takeru’s primary colour is green, which is traditionally associated with Hope in the West.

Personally, I think the Crest of Hope symbolises one of the main messages of Digimon Adventure, which is “never, never, never give up”. The series doesn’t preach Hope in the sense of blind optimism, or of believing that life is wonderful and everything will be all right all the time. Instead, it teaches children  that there will always be dark, difficult moments in life, but that it’s important to stay strong and believe that no situations are truly hopeless. I think it’s a beautiful sentiment.
