How to Care for Your Tenma

If you are reading this, congratulations! You have just purchased your very own Kenzo Tenma ™! In order to make your experience with your Tenma optimal, basic instructions have been provided for your convenience.

Basic Care

Thankfully, Tenmas are not too needy or demanding. Simply provide warm food, clothing, and shelter and your Tenma will be satisfied. However, a special point should be made about food. If your Tenma is preoccupied (either because of focus on work or worrying about something), he may forget to eat. When under chronic stress, he may lose the desire to eat altogether. Make sure to encourage healthy caloric intake if he gets into this state.

Personality

Tenmas are kind, gentle people, but at the same time they have a quiet inner strength. Their personality has a seemingly contradictory combination of selflessness and individualism. In reality, however, these two aspects complement one another. They want to be themselves and they encourage others to do the same. In the case of Tenmas, part of being themselves is living up to their high moral standards.

In addition, Tenmas are also very intelligent and love learning. They have strong interests in both the arts and the sciences and are capable of competence in either of these fields. However, due to both a family background in medicine and their desire to help others they tend to go into medicine.

Interacting with Your Tenma

Tenmas are generally very easy going and sociable. They may get testy at times, but this is only when suffering high stress and they will apologize. Despite their sociability, they are also moderately introverted and independent by nature, so they do need some space. Allow your Tenma to relax with quiet activities such as reading or drawing. (Tenmas have a hidden artistic side to them, even if they do tend to gravitate toward medical careers).

Their introversion and independent streaks also leave them with a disdain for groups. Don’t force a Tenma to associate with a group unless it is absolutely necessary. He may go along with your request, but he will secretly not enjoy it. That is not to say that Tenmas are not social creatures; they most certainly are. It is just that they prefer one-on-one interactions or small gatherings of friends rather than large and/or organized groups.

Overall, Tenmas make excellent companions or conversational partners. They are good listeners and willing to give advice. However, they do not talk much about themselves. They are very private people. If you wish to be more intimate with him, prepare to have that be a bit one-sided for a while. They have difficulties opening up to other people because they guard their sensitive inner selves. They also dislike being a burden on other people and have issues with being manipulated by others. Yet deep down, they have a strong desire for intimacy. If you show him that you are trustworthy and honest and remind him that he shouldn’t be ashamed of his emotional needs, he will start warming up to you and will eventually become a very loving and loyal partner.

Hygiene

Tenmas strongly prefer to clean themselves unless you are a romantic partner. If you happen to achieve this, run a warm bath with fragrant body wash. Do not bathe him for longer than 72 minutes. By that time, he will have gotten all shriveled up and that’s not fun. :(

Troubleshooting

My Tenma won’t eat! This is the most common problem. Sometimes, he may simply working too hard and needs a reminder. However, if stressed, this will become more chronic. Show concern and offer some food. He will usually eat then. If necessary, coax him with traditional Japanese cuisine (especially if it involves soy sauce) or black forest cake. In actuality, Tenmas really enjoy food. Sometimes, however, they may be too focused or feeling down.

My Tenma won’t shower or shave! This only occurs when under enormous stress, since under normal circumstances they are well-groomed. Let him know that it’s bothering you and/or that you are concerned for him, and he will shower/shave.

My Tenma is too busy for me! Tenmas have high standards, and as such, are arduous workers. Furthermore, they are idealistic and enjoy helping as many people as they can. Sometimes, they just become so focused that they don’t realize you need them. In this case, any negligence on his part is completely unintentional. Tell him about it and he will try to make time for you. However, if he does realize this and continues the behavior, there is likely a problem he cannot ignore. Remember that even though Tenmas are very kind and generous, they have needs too. They may deny help at first, but be persistent.

My Tenma has been accused of serial murder. I don’t think he would do such a thing, but his claim that the real culprit is someone named Johan who has been killing since he was a kid is ridiculous. Your Tenma has not gone off the deep end. This Johan character is for real.

A friend of mine were talking and she made a very good point how, in this pairing particularly, Tenma is usually depicted as apprehensive about his own feelings and his partner’s advances. Sometimes it’s turned into a joke where he doesn’t seem to know what he wants and he’s like yes, no, maybe, I don’t know.

With that in mind, I drew Tenma going on the offensive, having already accepted his feelings, and going about it in a ridiculous way because he’s a ridiculous man that drops everything to chase after a murderous ex-patient.
