@starwonderz / oracle starter call. ( claire stanfield )
"Hey, let's take a breather."
In agreeing to teach Tsukasa a few tricks, Claire had known perfectly well just how determined he'd be to make them happen. But Claire's the most determined person in the world, so it stands to reason that even the closest person to reaching his level of willpower would still come short when the subject of stamina came about.
Tsukasa might have been equipped to protest about carrying on, but Claire's not about to overwork the kid over some fun little circus tricks.
"I might've gotten these down in a day, but you're not me. So we're gonna take a break for the rest of the 'lesson', okay?" Despite the fact that they'd really never designated a time for this instruction or ever referred to it as a lesson, Claire takes on the role of stern but helpful teacher. "One of the best Italian spots should be serving lunch by now, I'll get you some! Think of it as a reward for doing pretty good!"
#red eyes and red hair. / claire stanfield.#starwonderz#your card is the aspirant! (reversed)#it's basically a big shoutout to take a fucken break. so. fun little break in the midst of the vague 'claire shows tsukasa circus tricks'#plot we have going on

one of my biggest pet peeves as melvi's possible biggest fan is when people misunderstand melvi from a logistical perspective. he looks like gretto, textually, because his dna is taken from lord avaro's still-immortal and eternally suffering self.
from a subtextual perspective he looks like gretto for the sake of making maiza violently ill and throwing him deeply off his game.
and from an even more subtextual perspective, his connections to the avaro and dormentaire families are no better than his connection to szilard quates. he shares nothing with them and benefits less as a "person" from having those connections than he would without them. his multiple inescapable connections to people serve only to remind him that his only worth is who he's "supposed" to be, and that who he is is nothing.

"Death is just another change. Something was alive; that changes, and they're dead. But no matter."
Ronny exhales a puff of smoke from his unnaturally long-lasting cigarette, unable to shake off the general air of boredom that seems to cling to him no matter how interested he actually is in a topic or person.
"Having seen the extent of things that I have, plans going awry and changing is one of the only things that still keeps being entertaining." That and people, though Ronny chooses not to expound on that particular fascination of his during this conversation. The two topics are inextricably linked, but he's a master at skirting around things he'd rather not discuss. "But I think even something stuck in its ways can be interesting, in that regard. If only because it's only a matter of time before it isn't, or it's gone."
Ironically, Ronny himself is one of the only beings he knows of that hasn't changed at all.
▸ @drfeelgreed ⟶ ❛ ❛ Change is the only reliable thing in the world.. ❜ from Ronny ! ❜ ╱ ( shadow of night , accepting . )
“Change and death!” Simon laughs in agreement. He almost throws in that death is the case for most people, anyway, but he thinks better of it. The End will come for them all at some point—at least, he assumes, unless one of the other Entities is capable of eradicating it—but for right now, it’s better not to tempt it with hubris.
“A lot of people don’t like to admit that, clinging so desperately to the past or present, ignoring that the fact that it will fade is exactly what makes it fun! I don’t want to go back to the past. I’ve experienced a lot of change in my time.” Exactly how much, he won’t say just yet. “It’s always been so entertaining! You never know what tomorrow is going to bring, and that’s why I hate making plans. It’s served me very well so far.”

"I DON'T WANT TO GET INVOLVED" PROMPTS * assorted dialogue for saying i don't want to get roped into your bs, basically, adjust as necessary
that sounds like a you problem.
i have no desire to get involved.
don't rope me into this.
this isn't what we agreed to.
i have limits, you know.
i'm retired. sorry.
everything's a life or death situation with you at this point.
this is getting to be too much for me to handle.
this is out of control.
we could get in serious trouble.
you're dragging me into something i can't handle.
please don't wrap me into something stupid.
you never told me you were involving me.
i'm not risking my life for you.
unfortunately, this is my breaking point.
i'm not here to solve your problems.
i can't help you.
go find someone else to bother.
you can say it until you're blue in the face. the answer is still no.
i can't fix this for you. you have to be the one to do it.
cry all you want, but i'm staying out of it.
you told me you would keep me out of this.
when were you going to tell me?
you did this, not me.
there are plenty of people out there willing to help you.
you're responsible for my safety now.
when did my name get thrown into the ring?
i want no part in your bullshit.
don't rope me in.
this is getting out of hand fast.
this isn't what i pictured.
you made it sound like it would be an easy fix.
you promised me you'd protect me from this.
no one's supposed to know i'm here.
that wasn't part of our agreement.
i do this one thing, and then you let me go?
what's it going to take for you to let me leave?
i'm up to my shoulders in bullshit.
you're the one who stuck your neck out. i'm just along for the ride.
how many times do i have to say it? i'm not interested in getting involved.
we can't make this work.
you'll never convince me to stay.
i've got my own problems i'm dealing with.
my world's upside down enough as it is.
i don't need to juggle your crap as well as my own.
there's gotta be someone else who can help you.
i left the business a long time ago.
unless you have any more questions, i'm going back to work.
well, good luck with that.
sounds like you've got a lot you're dealing with.
i hope it goes well for you.
you didn't have to drag my name into this.
why did you pick me?
i said i didn't have time for this.
i know what i said, but i'm taking it back.
that wasn't part of the deal.
you're using my words against me.

Oh, what a pleasant surprise!
It's the sort of reaction that should make someone want to say something like 'hey, that's an unusual reaction!'. Christopher is tempted to exclaim something like that himself, actually, caught a little off-guard by the easygoing way in which the stranger in the rain had responded to him. There aren't very many people who would; Christopher can count them on a single hand.
The Poet. Graham Specter. Vino.
The associations spark interest. Ignoring that it's actually extremely presumptuous to base his feelings off of comparisons to other people, Christopher already feels a spark of respect for this stranger.
"I think it's a shame," Christopher says, "but I can't really do anything about the fact that people have no idea how to appreciate a good rainstorm, these days!"
There probably hadn't ever been a time in history where the majority of people preferred being outside in the rain, but the thought doesn't bother Christopher, who purposefully inserts a little bit of a skip into his step. "Nothing is better than putting yourself right into the middle of the deluge! If the rain hits you hard enough, you might even start to feel yourself disappearing into it, hahahaha!"
He throws his hands up and spins a full circle once without interrupting the speed or pace of his walking.
"Besides, the downpour might hide everything, but 'everything' includes these horrifically ugly buildings we usually see all around us. That's more than enough of a reason to thank it for its existence!"
Privately, times like these are the only times Christopher feels at all at-home walking the earth. There isn't any belonging for him among people, nature, or any creation of both of them. But the rain washes away everything about his identity, leaving him a formless feeling that could probably drown itself in happiness if it isn't careful.
In other words, it's fun.
The weather in the north took some getting used to. Naturally, New Orleans was no stranger to rain but each time a storm rolls through, Alastor can't shake the feeling that the rain in the Big Apple is irreconcilably different. Chicago's rain had been different, too, but this was unlike even that.
Or perhaps it's all in his mind-- an illusion brought on by his inherent aversion to the changes presented by moving so far from home. Two new cities and two new radio stations later and it hasn't gotten any easier; Alastor still misses home. Of course, there were plenty of bitter parts-- parts he could most certainly do without-- not to mention the ghosts of his past piling up around him long before the close call that made leaving a necessity. The danger grew with each and every kill, and yet abandoning his home had been no easy decision.
Before Chicago, Alastor had never left the city of his birth, and even now as he walks through the urban labyrinth of New York, he still thinks of his childhood home. Sitting right where he left it, gutted of all his possessions-- his secrets and memories, his nightmares, his silly broken dreams. It had been one of the few things he had been able to hold onto all this time, but now the house was nothing but a shell, left behind like a sun-bleached skeleton of the life he once lived. Someone else would call it home one day, or perhaps they'd tear it down. Either way, whoever owns it next could never truly understand what it means.
At least Alastor still has the rain. He's always enjoyed the sound.
He's taken to walking in it lately-- bundled against the biting chill of the year's rainy season, black umbrella opened against the deluge spilling forth from the silvered skies above. Alastor strolls unperturbed through storm-slicked city streets, scarlet rain boots splashing into puddles of various depths as he enjoys the rhythmic pattering of the downpour against the world around him.
The roads are all but abandoned, by people and automobiles alike-- save for one individual, that is. The broadcaster hears him before he sees him-- the man's laughter ringing out against the howl of the storm as he emphatically shouts praises up into the act of nature. Alastor doesn't halt his steps, long past the ability to be disturbed by unorthodox behavior, and apparently, his impromptu companion takes it as an open invitation. When he does finally come into view, morphing in out of the thick haze, it's to fall into step right at the radio host's side.
Alastor doesn't offer the cover of his umbrella-- the stranger seems to be enjoying himself plenty without it-- but he does shift it over to his other shoulder, allowing for the gentleman to walk more comfortably alongside him.
He was never one to mind entertaining company, after all !
" I couldn't agree more, " Alastor answers smoothly, returning a grin just as wide as he picks up his end of the conversation with seamless joviality. " I find it rather amusing-- humans are 70% water and yet, we can still drown ! Even so, I'm quite taken with the rain. There's something undeniably pleasant in being one of the few out and about to appreciate it-- like being awake at three in the morning ! There's a lovely sort of liminality in going for a walk when most other souls choose to hide, hm ? "

@tocliimb ( vaggie ) / continued from here.
"Oh---my apologies. I'm just a poor, unenlightened Sinner who can't help but behave badly; it's in my nature."
The smile Melvi wears suggests that he isn't, in fact, sorry. In fact, the expression fits his actual feelings on the matter personally, since even the idea of redemption won't ever be anything other than a joke in his eyes. The Hotel is only a convenience---a place for protection Melvi can leech upon until it becomes unsustainable, or too annoying to bother with.
"Rehabilitation seems like it should imply some manner of growing pains. Really, how ever do you expect to cater to a troubled audience like myself by treating my mistakes so harshly?"

" maybe showing one act of kindness leads to kinder souls down the road? " | from lingyang to christopher (roveresonated)
"Hmm. Maybe."
Christopher's initial response doesn't give much of anything away. That's only half-likely to change when he inevitably goes on about whatever he's decided to go on about this time---it could be the truth, or it could be nonsense he's saying as a diversion.
"I don't really know what to make of kindness. Obviously if you choose to be kind and if you don't then you don't, but most people have it in their minds what they're going to be like regardless of how kind you are! Or maybe that's just me...?" Speaking somewhat cheekily, Christopher sticks his tongue out at Lingyang. "Anyway, I do plenty of kind things for people. I make lots of friends!"
It's sort of debatable what the definition of 'making a friend' is in this case. Christopher isn't exactly known for his conventional ways of thinking when it comes to friendships.
"That doesn't make me any kinder of a soul, though. I'm a one-of-a-kind backstabber, but that's just how I was made, so it's alright. I think most people understand my loyalties only lie with them when they don't have to lie elsewhere."
There isn't anything forcing me to align with the people who aided in my creation, but I certainly don't belong anywhere else.
the circe saga. / accepting ( @roveresonated ).
