2 étapes plus loin. L'ajout de marques au fusain, à la craie et à l'encre de Chine permet de dynamiser l'ensemble et faire surgir des formes nouvelles. A ce stade, il est parfois difficile de ne pas tomber dans une trop grande structuralité et de perdre ainsi sa spontanéité.

A noter également des griffures, faites à la point d'un couteau de peinture. Il s'agit d'une forme de scarification qui donne plus de texture à la surface, qui joue un rôle dans les prises de décisions ultérieures.

Mais, il est impératif pour moi qu'à aucun moment quelque chose me soit dictée. Je m’efforce à tout instant de m'octroyer de passer outre une 'trop grande évidence'.

Le début d'un tableau. Tout est encore possible, rien n'est écrit d'avance. Sans doute le meilleur moment dans le processus de création.

Après cette première étape, je reviens des dizaines de fois revoir ce premier jet. Parfois juste pour regarder, parfois pour modifier quelque chose. Ces moments sont pour moi de véritables séances de méditation Pleine conscience pendant lesquelles je mets mon entière attention sur la toile devant moi. Tout comme dans la méditation, je laisse les couleurs, les formes, mais aussi les sons environnants venir à moi, en évitant tout jugement, en les acceptant comme ils arrivent .

Petit à petit un processus créatif se met en route où le tableau intervient autant sur moi que moi sur lui...

Mindful thoughts on De Kooning

When I think of De Kooning, the first idea that comes to me is emotional impact. There's one painting he did that touches me so deep inside that I almost get tears in my eyes: it's called 'palisades' and I will probably never be able to actually see it because it's in a private collection.

But, nevertheless, the numerous photographs published on the web give a good idea of it. At least I hope so.

What is it that hits me so hard in this image? There's this warm center and a rather cold outskirt, very few harsh contrasts. Maybe it's the juxtaposition of this reddish-blue and the burned sienna, or the calm lower third in opposition to a more chaotic upper part. I tried several times to analyze this composition, but it won't help. I keep being hypnotized.

So, I came to the conclusion that what really hits me is the emotional resonance I have while looking at it. This painting is emotions at a pure state. Emotions neither put into words nor into shapes or recognizable forms. Emotions before the invention of logic. Sort of a quantum state of human feelings: they only exist because we look at them. And while looking at them we make them ours.

My own work is comparable to this ( https://uwehoche.com ). Being unable to express my feelings or sometimes even to acknowledge them, the only way I know to achieve awareness of their existence is to paint. And not only is painting my unique way to express emotions, but I am also only able to do so after letting go of logical thinking. Intuition is, by far, a better procedure while trying to achieve this kind of purity of expression. I still have a very long way to go before even hoping to get somewhat close to what De Kooning was able to do but it's worth trying anyway. Besides, I feel I don't have a choice neither.

I know De Kooning was a heavy drinker, which may have helped him in a way to let loose more easily. Now that's a challenge for me since I am not all into drugs or alcohol as a trigger for creativity. Let's hope I will never need any artificial paradise to achieve my goals...

What do you think? Are emotions a valuable motivation for artmaking? Can emotion be translated into colors? (please don't give me those stinky theories about the psychological sense of each color, to me that's as true as astrology)
