little rant that's been on my mind for a while, concerning misogyny in our community and how pervasive it is. read if you dare...

i see so much hate online towards the women in music, particularly the girlfriends of rock stars—yoko and courtney are good examples but in our community specifically i see a lot hate towards girls like nancy spungen & viv albertine. do you ever sit back and ask yourself why you actually hate these girls and why you give so much leeway to the men in punk but not the women ? it seems to me that a lot of it is jealousy—you're jealous of these women who knew your favourite artists and you want so badly to tear them down. why do you treat your favourite male artists like babies who can't do anything for themselves without a woman coming along and influencing them ? it's like you think if something in their band goes wrong it's ALWAYS the woman's fault—she's manipulative, she's abusive, she's a groupie, she's controlling... have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe, male artists have just as much autonomy as female artists and that they're completely capable of making poor decisions on their own ?

if i was petty enough, i would go ahead and list all the bad things mick did to viv since you all love blaming her for everything, but it's not worth it. i'm completely capable of understanding nuance and still being able to love my favourite musician whilst also acknowledging the more poor decisions he's made—a lot of you can't, and that's why you take it out on the women. you want to excuse their problematic actions so badly that you need to blame it on a woman in their life. don't think this isn't about you, don't think you're immune to being misogynistic because trust me i know who the people in this fandom are that act this way and there's a lot of you... i'm not trying to villainise anyone i'm just asking you to really sit back and think about why you hate these women so much, and just try and change the way you think about musicians in general.
