The Clash singing shouting along to YMCA on WBCN Boston, September 19, 1979. Apparently they were drunk.

Idk if anybody remembers my Clash wall on the keyboard piano. Here’s how it looks now. Ignore the two bottom things on the record wall. They’re fill-in’s for the missing records (Self titled and Cut the Crap)
Also I added a Bruce Lee poster on the other side of the wall!!

What are your thoughts on people discrediting Joe Strummer punk legacy because of his posh background?
this is a difficult question bc while i have no issue with joe strummer being posh- plenty of progressives and socialists have come from posh backgrounds! its a non-issue that he was brought up with money- i have a massive issue with him lying about his background in order to better fit the image he and bernie rhodes were crafting for the clash and otherwise attempting to benefit from being viewed as working class. 'classfaking' is a bit of a stupid term but thats the best description of what hes doing- hes pretending to be part of a culture he isnt part of for clout. thats a slimy thing to do, esp since real working class ppl (like johnny rotten) kept telling him how much it offended them
ive touched on this before in this post and my thoughts remain the same. i dont begrudge ppl who cant get over this issue to the point that it damages their view of him/the clash esp since joe put on a fake working class accent. thats always rubbed me the wrong way. but, as i said in the post i linked, i dont think hes a bad person for doing this. ppl have done far worse. but its smth that needs to be discussed when analyzing the clash and joe's impact on punk
anyway, all of that aside, this headline really sums it up for me re: joe's legacy as a punk figurehead. he could have had an easy life, his diplomat father could have helped him get a good job with a good salary, but he didnt want that. and i dont think we should sit here and say he should have wanted that just bc thats what ppl with his background are 'meant to do'. anyone who throws away their privilege to pursue solidarity is exactly the type of ally you want. was he the perfect ally? no. but i'd much rather have joe strummer lead singer of the clash then john mellor the government employee
