Day 6 - Grant’s Pass to Sun River
Today, we say goodbye to our brief stay in Grant’s Pass. Before heading out, we go through the old downtown. The old buildings have been converted to funky clothing shops, gastropubs and a comic shop (that offers a free comic for every ‘A’). It is a re-habbed downtown that indicates some money in the area. We stop at Rogue Roasters coffee to get our fix before heading out of town. As we leave, we stop for gas and it turns out it is a full-service gas station. Didn’t even know that those still existed.
We are in beautiful country - pine forests and two-lane highways. Without any planning on our end, turns out we are going right near Crater Lake on our way to Sun River. Can’t pass up the opportunity! Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the country (5th in the world) and with its rain/snowmelt base is also one of the purest. The lake was formed in a caldera of an extinct volcano. I will say - it lives up to the hype! We go around the western rim, the shorter of the two routes. None of us is up for the hike down to the lake to swim (it’s 700 feet back up.) Instead, we take in the views from a couple of different vantage points. We were concerned that it would be crowded but that isn’t the case. We have no problem find places to pull-out.
Before leaving the park, we pull off on an area where there is still quite a bit of snow near the road. Cam climbs up the small hill and sleds down on this butt. That gives other people the same idea and soon more kids (and 1 adult) are sledding as well. We climb to the top of the hill to get one last vantage before heading out of the park.
Becky has done a great job of navigating us to date. We have one problem this time. No cell coverage. Our reliance on Google Maps will prove to be our downfall (okay, a bit dramatic here). We do, however, end up going the wrong way. We discover it after a while but it does add an hour to our drive. We are tired of driving and can’t wait to get to the Sun River resort. I will say, though, if you are going to get lost on a two-lane highway, this is the place to do it (as long as you don’t break down)! Pine forests, lakes and mountains. The traffic is sparse on the two-lane highway and it starts to rain lightly. My kind of travel.
With cell coverage regained and a turn-around, we head in the right direction. We pass through an area that looks to have had a hailstorm with hail on the ground and fog nipping the road. We don’t experience any ourselves but it adds an eerie, Twin Peaks quality to the place.
We arrive at Sun River. It is a resort and we’ll be staying for two days. I think just what we need at this point in the journey. A place to just relax. A vacation from our vacation. It has golf, white-water rafting, bicycle rentals and swimming! We check into our place, a two-story end unit with a great view of the golf course and mountains. (I am sitting in the Adirondack chair on our porch as I write this.) We eat at the Twisted River Tavern and watch the Cards eek out a victory against the Rockies (3-2). Afterwards, we go out side and place a ring-toss like game and partake of putt-putt golf (on real greens). We finish our night in the pool and hot-tub. A good way to close out another great evenings on our vacation!
