aita for knowingly decimating an entire ocean's ecosystem?

i (m) am an engineer and diplomat on an alien planet, and our embassy was a giant spire made out of possibly sentient sludge on a remote island.

business as usual, until an unprecedented signal disrupted the structural integrity of our spire and caused it to begin collapsing. fortunately, my friends and i had the resources and knowledge on hand to head to the spire control device at its base, along the way picking up some other survivors of the initial collapsing.

we had arrived in plenty of time to halt further collapse when my friend "c" (m) figured out that the spire's structural manager "v" (f) was attempting to open an interdimensional portal with equipment from the spire as fuel, including corpses. interdimensional portals are incredibly dangerous, so we knew this action could not be good. "c" knew that the process of creating an interdimensional portal requires great care to move around to ensure that we ourselves were not annihilated, so that significantly delayed us.

along the way, some of my friends admitted to being part of a large hidden conflict over whether this exact portal should or should not be opened. we all eventually agreed that the portal opening method was too violent for anyone to truly benefit from it.

and "v" was quite adamant about opening the portal, too. so much so that whatever external entity she had teamed up with to set the portal into motion afflicted me with an infection that would completely control my mind within a relatively short time. we all worked together to wrest "v" from her station and halt the portal formation, although we suffered heavily for it.

when the portal closed, the extent of my infection decreased significantly, but i could still feel it. furthermore, my acquaintance "k" (nb), who is a structural management specialist, knew there was then no time to stop the spire from collapsing entirely. i took control of the spire management device and devised a plan to evacuate as many survivors as possible.

this plan was to instruct everyone still alive to report to their rooms, then use the aqueous sludge allocated to spire upkeep to eject the rooms into the surrounding ocean, directing all intact spaceships in the vicinity to evacuate everyone from the planet entirely. while everyone sheltered in their rooms, i relayed what i had learned about the conflict.

unfortunately, the aqueous sludge probably was not very good for whatever wildlife was living in the underwater area around the spire. but it was worth it, to save everyone and to put an end to the hidden conflict, was it not?
