“Shall I model it for you?”

I laughed, surprised to hear the sound echo across the room. From Elain.

- Feyre

The vacancy fogged over her eyes. But Elain lifted her chin. “No matter what, don’t kill him. Please.” “We’ll try—”

“Swear it.” I’d never heard that tone from her. Ever.

Nightmares about the moment when Cassian was near death and Nesta was sprawled over him, shielding him from that killing blow, and Elain—Elain—had taken up Azriel’s dagger and killed the King of Hybern instead.

Amren’s eyes narrowed slightly. I straightened, glancing between them. Unusual, yes, for Elain to be so vocal, but she’d been improving. Most days, she was lucid—perhaps quiet and prone to melancholy, but aware.

Elain, to my surprise, held Amren’s gaze.

- Feyre

Elain’s face reddened further, her back straightening. But she didn’t bolt. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I’d never heard Elain’s voice so cold.

- Feyre

Elain, surprisingly, held her ground.

- Nesta

Elain stiffened, but refused to balk from whatever she beheld in Nesta’s gaze. “You think I’m to blame for his death?” Challenge filled each word. Challenge—from Elain, of all people.

- Nesta

Elain remained in the doorway, her face pale but her expression harder than Nesta had ever seen it.

- Nesta

“Elain showed some teeth,” I observed. “I wasn’t expecting that.”

- Feyre

Nesta was wrong, Cassian realized, to think Elain as loyal and loving as a dog. Elain saw every single thing Nesta had done, and understood why.

- Cassian

This girl is about to pop off in her book and floor everybody.

“Seprated the soul from the body” > a mateing bind is a bridge to the soul or maybe in reference to truth teller and Gwythdion being “seperated”

The name Elain also means “fawn” in welsh “ and with an e added to the end (Elaine) means “light”

In Hebrew “my God has answered me”

So, you know how Cassian wondered why Elain didn’t hold Azriel’s gaze in ACOSF? Well, if you have any lingering puzzlement, this little parallel might explain why…

We see Nesta struggling to avoid lingering eye contact with Cassian in Chapter 38.

And that’s because it results in this. Romantic tension.

And then what do we see in Chapter 44 between Azriel and Elain? The lovely fawn is avoiding lingering eye contact with the Shadowsinger.

And that’s because, when their gazes do meet for an extended period of time in Chapter 58, we get this:

the fact that gw*nriels will spend all day and night calling elriel bland and boring while turning around and stealing every trope, scene, quote, trait, etc from elriel will always be so funny to me

We have only gotten bare snippets of Azriel and Lucien’s POV and they both to some extent focused on Elain. There is no way this juxtaposition of the two males’ “there she was” moment was not very intentional by SJM.

Lucien, ACOWAR: “But there she was. His mate. She was nothing like Jesminda.”

Azriel, BC: “…and there she was. The faelights gilded Elains unbound hair, making her glow like the sun at dawn.”

Lucien immediately thinks of her, not by her name, but as his mate. And then proceeds to immediately compare her to his lost love (and find her lacking). (Bonus points for saying she’d been “thrown at him” a few paragraphs later).

Azriel, meanwhile, waxes poetic about the woman he adores and her beauty. It can’t be a coincidence that they both have a “there she was” moment with Elain in the only times we read their POV, and we all know which of the two is superior. SJM was telling us everything we needed to know.

But Azriel only took Elain’s heavy dish of potatoes from her hands, his voice soft as night as he said, “Sit. I’ll take care of it.” Elain’s hands remained in midair, as if the ghost of the dish remained between them.

This piece is inspired by one of my favourites Elriel scenes, but this time he doesn't just take the dish of potatoes but also a thank you kiss 🩷

But Elain turned on her heel. “Find me when you wish to begin.” The doors shut behind her.

Even though her Mother and Nesta thought that Elain did not dream beyond her garden, she was blessed by fate with mighty gifts to defy that role and destiny. She can dream and travel to her heart’s content through her mind.
