I imagine that, in a nordic context, Mara takes the role of the protector of the family ahead of the god of the family. Like obviously she still protects the family regardless of the pantheon, but in skyrim she is very specifically the protector. Given that she's the she-wolf and all, it feels logical for her to fill that role. Rather than gathering her children into a soft, warm kind of love, she circles them, guarding, lashing out at predators.
