Ember, she/her, over thirty. Into a variety of animanga, western animation, and video games, particularly anything with f/f. I enjoy writing fanfiction as a form of self-expression and a sort of conversation with the source material and fandom.

reject the western gaze!
mutual aid means no hierarchy between givers and receivers
a new mutual aid org, Bridge of Solidarity, has been established in the gaza strip by 17 year old poet yazan mohammed in response to the exploitative practices conducted by some charities and encouraged by the existing charity-based model of fundraising for gaza. according to BoS: "the western attention economy and pity economy plays a large role in who lives or dies in gaza." essentially, people need to make themselves marketable in order to receive lifesaving aid; people who are not marketable die. yazan himself wrote about the damage this can do to one's self image, which you can read here.
after trying for a year to respect his own privacy, my friend siraj was also pressured into posting images of his son's emaciated body in order to gain sympathy from westerners.
we cannot keep forcing people to do this anymore.
here's a declaration of their values from bridge of solidarity's most recent post:
Our organization is against the Western gaze. We refuse to humiliate people. We refuse to force people to take photos. We refuse to force people to take photos with our flyer or logo. People will receive aid freely without being forced to pose. We will respect people's privacy completely. Our principles include autonomy, dignity, sovereignty, mutual respect, and mutual aid.
this org will prioritize giving aid to people without phones or social media, who do not speak english, and who do not have outside support or living parents. these are the people who are not palatable to westerners but who deserve to live with as much dignity as everyone else
as of five days ago, BoS are working on a water truck delivery

this is racist on its own but i think what always gets me about these types of posts is (and i realize this is a very surface level observation but) you never see people on here say "western live-action dramas are the high school girls in underwear medium" people will critique riverdale or pretty little liars or supernatural or the such individually but the issue is almost always attributed to the specific piece of media or the writers and not the medium as a whole despite the fact that a large amount of these examples do in fact do the same things people constantly act like are unique flaws of anime (misogyny, sexualization of high school characters, romanticization of underage characters getting with overage ones, ect.) it's all just very blatant

Your thoughts were at one point what was being discussed with that. A really big problem with feminist attempts to explore how the patriarchy hurts men too is how readily the patriarchal framework co-opts that discussion. Under patriarchy, men's suffering is "rewarded" with dominion over women. Attempts to draw attention to the suffering are all too often met with, "Hey, you're right! That does suck! So where's my promised reward?"
when i first heard about the male loneliness epidemic i was like oh yeah close camaraderie and bonding between men is often discouraged in favor of competition or, if not discouraged, at least filtered through a lens of individualism that precludes deep connections. and then i learned what people meant by it (men arent getting laid) to which i say skill issue

A more realistic 'what if Char rescued Amuro from Cheyenne' scenario.
Didn't know he was there, was sneaking in for military secrets and well..he found a pretty big one.

I'm not going to add it on the post I'm talking about because I don't want to Get Into It and I know OP is memeing but the idea of comparing Gundam and Utena as two "Primordial Anime" is bizarre to me. Utena is a show that is very much in conversation with prior anime and manga (Rose of Versailles, Sailor Moon, and yes Gundam 0079 just to name a few) and understanding the history and context that surrounds it is vitally important to understanding the show.
In addition - "Despite being Gundam, Witch From Mercury is Utena" - I'm sorry but Witch From Mercury is maybe 5% Utena and 95% Gundam. Witch From Mercury plays so many Gundam tropes completely straight - doomed cyber newtypes, Earthnoids vs. Spacenoids, mommy issues - that a common criticism from the Gundam fanbase is that it was actually too safe.

Nah, this doesn't work because Utena is also Gundam. Which is why Witch from Mercury could later be Utena and Gundam at the same time. Utena is certainly iconic and foundational in its own right, but you'd have to go back a lot earlier to find an anime that can define its own clade separate from Gundam.
Has anyone done this yet?
