while im on my soapbox can i offer the idea that izaya rui and eito are all just the same guy but with extreme presentations of some different mental affliction. i dont know you just need to believe me

first i want to note i quite literally only just got into hundred line, im still on route 0 but i've been infodumped and seen fandom stuff etc so take what i say about eitaku with a grain of salt i guess

tsukasa shizuo and takumi all seem to have related complexes. tsukasa and takumi want to protect, serve, lead- which you'd think isn't related to shizuo at all, but i'd say shizuo's 'i dont want to hurt others' complex is like an opposite approach from the same heart. in either case all of them are very concerned with what they do or dont do for others

rui izaya and eito are all very concerned with... humanity and manipulation? or rather they view humanity as something they'll never have and therefore from the outside they have like this omniscient insight into 'using' others. or something. for better or for worse purposes- rui just larps out this feeling by directing.

anyways. now here's where things get crazy. the relationships to each other.

if tsukasa/shizuo/takumi are all concerned with their use (or non use), rui izaya and eito are concerned with using.

the very reason that i said shizuo was opposite (but the same) to the others because of his complex surrounding *non*use instead of use? is exactly the same reason why shizaya has the bitterest relationship of them all here. shizuo cannot be molded into anything izaya wants to use him for and that's why they are already divorced before even dating (which we all knew this, but anyways) but ruikasa enjoys a happy marriage and eitaku are more or less(?) equals. at least it seems takumi tries for it to be.

even though izaya and eito both see shizuo/takumi as subhuman, takumi at least has the manipulatable heart that ruizayeito types love to witness. tsukasa especially so it doesnt even need to be said. rui says roll over and tsukasa does.

what im saying is, if shizuo thought "i need to do more" rather than "i need to do less (im too much)" izaya would be all over him in an instant just like ruikasa or eitaku. and also shizuo doesn't let what izaya thinks of him define him necessarily unlike tsukasa or takumi.

basically, tsukasa shizuo and takumi are all dogs, and rui izaya eito are all owners. the owners specifically train their dogs to wait on them and the dogs will happily do anything to earn a treat.

That video of Alex Hirsch reading S&P notes for Gravity Falls conveys a few things to me:

1) the U.S. entertainment industry (especially animation) is run by older conservative types who make up offensive terms and get really mad about them.

2) the people who run Disney would be the first to fall in line with a fascist regime.

3) most of the media we consume is tailor-made and watered-down to appeal to the tastes of older, deeply religious conservative audiences.

4) conservatism, not the left, is and always has been the biggest voice of censorship in American culture.

Hugo is really quite a case regarding his relationship with Lycaon.

He craves Lycaon's company and attention, but his self-loathing keeps getting in the way, stopping him from being fully honest about wanting to be friends again. Lycaon too is a curious case because, rather than falling for the taunting whenever they meet, he's serious, can even joke around, and displays actual concern for Hugo, even when Hugo dismisses him (at times gently, other times rudely)

But I feel the key to their current relationship is in one trust event that has them talking about their past. In here, Hugo can't help feel guilty about Lycaon's legs, only to have Lycaon say this:

That's when it hit me. Lycaon is waiting to have Hugo back, but this can only happen when Hugo heals and attains the peace he wanted after forgiving himself. At least we know he's already on that difficult path, but he's doing it on his own.

What makes this duo so special is that Lycaon knows this and has seen through all of Hugo's barriers, and is more than ready to being his friend again, but he's patiently waiting for Hugo to feel like someone capable to mend their relationship.

Like, ofc is hilarious to see them bickering, but Hugo's trust events are illuminating as we see the classic "Friends to enemies" trope not be reduced to them arguing whenever they see each other, but actually be awkward in the other's presence, or even being able to lovingly reminisce about their youth together, then deeply regret how bad decisions and miscommunication stopped them from helping each other, and the guilt they both feel regarding how things ended.

Hugo's the only one that participates in the intense teasing, and that's because constant taunting is his self-defense mechanism, since he refuses to be vulnerable to the only person that could see the worst of him; the memories of their separation play a part in his refusal to accepting Lycaon's help. However, he ignores that this time around, Lycaon wouldn't abandon him.

If anything, Lycaon is waiting for the instant Hugo's defenses break down to immediately catch him and be together again. And Hugo is.... Open to this, since another trust event has him saying that, depending on the future, Lycaon could be either friend or foe ( though we know he's betting on being together once again)

For Lycaon and Hugo, the resolution of their complex relationship is simply a matter of time now that they're in each other's lives once more, and destiny keeps making them cross paths constantly for a reason.
