Dean Sherwood review- critical essay.
For this essay, I have chosen to discuss Dean Sherwood and his music photography work, specifically his work relating The Vamps. I discovered his work in 2014 and since then continued to follow alongside him and admire his style of just keeping his shots so natural yet capturing scenes so stunningly. Being a fan of The Vamps, the band he permanently works closely with, I have seen Dean in action at concerts and therefore witnessed his ability to capture the atmosphere so well and in such an instinctive way to get the best shots is just outstanding.
Focusing on his portrait work, his style of editing for these are extremely natural with minimal editing which gives each photo its own kind of flare. Even with the contrast between colour and black and white he manages to keep it raw. His style just captures all of the right things every time as he mixes it up with his depth of field. Half his photos have a wide depth of field which works well, as while doing this he manages to still focus on the important part/subject of the photo, which many photographers use depth of field for. The photos in which he does use depth of field work equally as well as he has a way of using it that I don’t see very commonly where he doesn’t have everything but the subject out of focus, only part of the image or visa versa he has most of the image blurred and only partial in focus and the way he makes this work if fascinating as it still follows the rules but somehow has his own unique touch to each photo.
Moving onto his live work, each photo he takes of the band performing seems to shine just as much talent as the last. He manages to find the perfect balance of depth of field and fit colour contrast well and constantly find a perfect subject. Dean manages to make these photos of 4 people in a fast-paced environment and thousands of people behind appear just right and not too busy even when its depth of field is large. His photo style has largely impacted my own, in regards to finding the unusual angles and some of the editing styles he has taken on such as adding grain effect post-shoot to make a photo have an old style vibe.
Overall, Dean stands out to me as a photographer as he appears to have a fresh breath of editing and styles that is still in the experimental stage, he uses multiple types of different cameras and changes up between portrait/landscape/live performance photos. The idea of not being held down to one set style as his own yet still being able to provide photos which when you look at you can tell it is his art draws me to him as being a great photographer.

yaz’s portrait.
this photo was taken late 2016 and it was on Canon 1300d and 18-55mm. I’m unsure on the settings, however it was edited in 2019 where I had played around with the saturation and added grain to add it to a film/disposable vibe.

Dancing the night away.
this photo was taken on canon 4000d and 50mm lens. It was my first experience with Nightclub photography so admittedly it wasn’t my best compared to my other photography style photos however I really like how the shot style and edit turned out and I can definitely learn from it and do better next time.

Funky Purple.
This photo was a spontaneous photo taken when I was filming at a gig. My settings were F/2.8, 1/100 and ISO 100. Post-edit this photo was good because the musicians clothes fit the lights and created a dreamy-purple vibe.
