Eat #local!! Eating local produce/meat reduces tons of #emissions, and helps your local economy in the process. All the more reason to load up at the #farmersmarket. Even better than buying local is #growing it yourself - a zero #carbon way to eat #sustainably and #deliciously. Here's some beautiful #organic kale from my backyard, courtesy of an extremely generous housemate!

An #uplifting #fact for your day, courtesy of AmericanForests.org. What's this mean in non-nerd terms? #Trees are constantly taking away #pollution (aka, carbon) for us, all while looking #beautiful AF.

I was fortunate enough to speak at #thiswaytosustainability #conference this past Friday, and spread the word about #behaviorchange and #inspiring others for the environment. Read my blog for more #sustainable inspiration! (at California State University, Chico)

Love this!!! I’m lucky enough to work with Rethink Disposable (the creator of this graphic), whose mission is to end the use of disposables and the waste/harm they create. These sustainable tips would make great New Years Resolutions, just sayin (wink wink)

This calls for a celebration!!! Today Obama rejected the Keystone XL Pipeline. Citing America’s responsibility as a leader in climate mitigation/policy, he (very obviously) said the pipeline would “undercut that global leadership”. I mean, duh. Anyways, this is a HUGE victory for environmentalists, our country, and the planet! If you want to read more about the historical decision, there’s a link below. Today’s a great day, everyone. I’m so excited. In times when it feels like environmental protection is against all the odds… Days like today remind us otherwise.

A cute, inspiring little reminder of the impact we can have if we just act. Small actions together add up to huge changes. And small actions are always better than no action at all.

Reasons to volunteer for the environment:
You get to be outside, usually somewhere beautiful (like a state park, wetland, or the beach!)
You see the DIRECT, immediate good you're doing for nature. I picked up 1.5 lbs of cigarette butts, plastic wrappers, even pieces of glass - and it felt a lot more productive than sitting at a computer.
It's exercise! While I was helping Huntington Beach be a little more beautiful, I was walking, kneeling, and stretching for 2+ hours.
Last but not least: feelings of happiness. Science says doing charitable work for others (whether people or plants) boosts our self esteem and overall feelings of contentment in our own lives. Give it a try - I think my huge dorky grin speaks for itself :)
Huge thanks to the wonderful Surfrider Foundation for hosting the cleanup. Between Surfrider and Heal the Bay, there are beach cleanups just about every weekend that you can go to - check out the links!

Speaking of plastic bottles...one company is trying to make a "Lego fantasy" come true by repurposing recycled plastic into roads. Talk about turning lemons into lemonade.

Plastic bottles dirty secret
Did you know... It takes THREE TIMES as much water to create a plastic bottle than it does to fill it. Which makes sense: plastic is created from petroleum (yes, the same sludge we put in our cars), which uses TONS of water to refine and contains a host of nasty chemicals. And many of these plastic bottles that end up in landfills or the ocean (63 million a year, to be exact) will take hundreds of years to break down. Where does the optimism come in? By using a reusable aluminum bottle, canteen, anything-that-holds-water, you avoid contributing to this entirely. Save tons of water, avoid plastic chemicals, reduce waste in landfills and oceans...all while hydrating with a much more stylish reusable bottle. You're awesome.

A handy little infographic on all you need to know about organic food.
Many assume "organic" is a green-washing label used as an excuse to charge higher prices. But when food is truly certified organic, you're getting produce grown without pesticides, meats free of antibiotics or hormones, and grains with no GMOs. Besides the obvious benefit of not putting chemicals and additives into your body, buying organic also supports the organic industry as a whole - bringing it closer to becoming mainstream (which would eventually lower their prices, holla).
