This obviously belongs in a wider conversation about the way people see japanese culture (and orientalism as a whole) but im sick of jp language learning content creators making fun of textbooks and saying “that’s not how jp people talk!!” yeah no shit. nobody is SAYING that lmao that’s not the point of textbooks. Yes there are valid criticisms of textbooks but the point is that they’re there to give the adult learner a foothold in the language.

And it’s such a jp lang learning thing too like im not fucking trying to integrate into the culture im not trying to become japanese because i think my own culture sucks/isn’t as good and i see it as an escape/my chance to finally achieve peak weaboo. jp people aren’t a superior monolith and neither is their culture and yr not doing them any favours by pretending it is. im literally just trying to learn how to say i want a fucking ice coffee im not trying to assimilate and walk among them as one of them 🙄
