Evie plucked the cookies and creme macaron from the platter that they’d been sharing and scrolled through an article on her laptop while Lexie read through her newspaper. “You’re like, one of the few people our age who still reads the paper copies of the newspaper. I do do some work for the traditional press, so I can’t complain,” Evie commended, adjusting her glasses as she read. Seasonal allergies made her life a bit difficult at times when it came to wearing contact lenses, but she knew that Lexie wouldn’t judge. “Oooh, more drama,” the publicist stated gleefully, clapping her hands. “Nothing compared to the gala, though. Two men were fighting over a woman in the middle of the dance floor. I was just minding my business and hanging out with Beck, then I see people throwing punches. It was glorious, honestly.”

The one thing Alexandra loved about every other Thursday was that they were her Fridays and this week, was that week. As a little pick me up, she was going to treat herself to a few macarons and sitting out on the patio to enjoy some sunshine while reading the newspaper and that was exactly what she did. Now here she was, a few pages in when she noticed a disturbance in front of her causing her eyes to slowly move from the page to two quarreling idiots in the street. “God, it truly wouldn’t be Monleon if there weren’t idiots fighting in the middle of the street,” She mused to no one in particular.

Evie was generally good about her diet, a habit that she’d developed during her pageant years. But there were times when she craved nothing but a donut from the local diner. Once she paid for the strawberry-frosted treat and a cup of cold brew, she spotted a familiar face in one of the booths. “Andy Nolton,” she greeted, giving her colleague a warm smile. While Evie knew that she was exceptionally skilled at her job, there were some others in the industry that she held great admiration for, and Andy was one of them. “Had a hankering for diner food like me?” she asked, glancing at his coffee. “What are you working on?” she inquired, taking a sip of her coffee, having a feeling that whatever it was, it was something important. “I’m here if you need an extra pair of eyes, or someone to bounce opinions off of - or just someone to talk to. But if working alone is more your style, no hard feelings.”
Tumblr media
If there was anything Andy was good at, it was this. Writing stories, finding out what made people tick, that was exactly why he had gone into journalism in the first place, and it was nice to know that he could still find stories worth telling while he was here. He had thought it would get boring, that he would no longer enjoy his job once he moved to this tiny market. Maybe the biggest lesson to learn here was that there were people everywhere with something worth reporting on, a story that needed to be told. Andy had always centered his work around the people who rarely got a voice, whose voices were often drowned out by those louder or stronger or more influential than them. He rooted for the underdogs, maybe because he was an underdog himself, once upon a time, and it was cathartic to tell the stories of people he saw pieces of himself in.
When he was writing scripts, he often lost track of time, and before he knew it, the coffee in front of him in the diner booth he had claimed as his own had grown cold and the script now far too long for a three-minute segment on the evening news. Still, it was better to have too much than too little, so he took a sip of his coffee, grimaced, put it back down and continued typing furiously.

Evie was a bit behind on her schedule that day, but getting her afternoon walk in was still bound to happen. She strolled through the park, knowing that this was exactly what she needed after the wild night at the gala. She was not hungover by any means, but still a bit exhausted after everything that transpired the night before, both the good and bad. She’d seen two men get into a fight over a woman, ended up taking one of those men home with her, and now as if fate was playing directly into her hands, the woman in question was on a bench right in front of Evie. The opportunity presented itself, and Evie was an opportunist in every sense of the word. “Don’t apologize. I just wanted to rest my legs for a bit,” she assured the other woman, putting on a concerned expression. “Hey, I know you. You run the... tarot card shop thing,” she started, not exactly sure what to call it. “I saw you at the gala last night, that was... intense.” Evie didn’t know what her true intention of this interaction was, but she was itching to know more.
Tumblr media
Ellie stared at her hands while sitting there at the park. The last couple of days had been hell for her and she couldn’t pretend anymore. After what happened at the party, she went home and slept until midday the following day, posting that she was going to be available at the shop only in the afternoon and that the tarot card reading was on hold because she had to many customers that week. That was a lie, of course, she had no one, but she could not make a reading while feeling like shit and her energy being all negative. That was the first thing her aunts taught her, never do a reading while feeling draining, mentaly and emotionaly. She had to leave the house and after feeding Merlin, Ellie prepared some boxes and began to put things inside. She checked for available flights to Alaska because she was actually thinking on going back. She could not stay in Monleon with Cason there, not after what happened. Too confused as she was, she decided to have a walk and enede up in the park, sitting there and staring into nothing until someone bumped their knee against hers. “Sorry,” Ellie said, moving a little to give space to whoever wanted to sit there.

casoncohen:
Cason knew that his head was pounding as he kept his eyes firmly closed, he could feel the morning sun that was burning him lightly in it’s glow, he stirred. Cason had been having one of those dreams that he wished he never had to wake up from, it’d been a happier time in his life. But it wasn’t a true memory of it, just one his brain had orchestrated; he wasn’t sure if it was to induce pain or to relinquish the bad memory he had of it. Either way a small smile had worked it’s way onto his face, eyes still firmly closed.
The bark however jolted him back to reality of the night before, realising he was in fact not in his own bed but the one of his new friend, Evie. He let one eye open as he peaked at her for a moment a joking groan as he rolled over and buried his face into the pillow. He loved dogs but he wished he could have stayed in that moment for just a little while longer.
‘‘Don’t apologise, all kind of pups are the best kinda pups’‘ Cason called out with his face still buried in the pillow, finally twisting until he was once again on his back, taking another look at her and a grin broke out across his mouth as he laughed lightly. ‘‘I’m not allergic, don’t you worry.’‘ He pushed to sit up as he ran a hand through his unruly hair, looking over too her and taking in her morning beauty for just a second, a snap shot, an image he’d captured in his mind.
‘‘I have to say Evie..’‘ he trailed off as he shook his head slightly. ‘‘You were exceptional last night.’‘ Cason stated and put it bluntly. He didn’t want to sugar coat it, hoping that it wouldn’t get weird because all he could say was that he’d enjoyed himself. It made him feel free, something that he very rarely felt these days. The connection was fantastic, and that was what he liked, nothing too complicated. ‘‘I honestly think you could teach me…a lot.’‘ He laughed.
It was one thing he’d never felt confident in about himself, maybe it was because there had never been many women in his life. He’d always been a long term relationship, the exploration had never been his strong suit but he was amazed by the woman beside me.
Just sweet simplicity.
Tumblr media
Evie cradled Honey in her arms, stroking the Pomeranian’s orange fur. “Good, because she doesn’t like going anywhere when I ask her to give me a moment. Also, good morning. I hope you slept well before Honey decided to be an alarm clock?” she asked, sitting on the edge of the bed next to Cason. Sex with no strings attached was fun, and she knew Cason well enough to know what to expect as opposed to swiping right on a random person on Tinder. Running a hand through her now tousled dark locks, attempting to smooth them over somewhat. “Slept well, at least?” she asked kindly, glancing at him as he began waking up. It had been a while since she woke up next to someone, as her flings usually left before the sun rose the following morning.
She couldn’t help but beam with pride when Cason complimented her skills in the bedroom. Years of experience and experimenting certainly led to a level of expertise, and she was glad to share her skills with the few people she deemed worthy. Cason should consider himself lucky to be included in that lineup. “I’ve been told that I’m a phenomenal teacher,” she responded, lying on her side and using her hand to prop her head up. Sex with Cason was fun, and she felt a connection - not necessarily a romantic one, but definitely like she trusted him and was able to enjoy herself as much as he did. “But thanks for reassuring me that my skills are still top-notch, I’d admit that it’s been a while since I got some practice,” the brunette admitted, giving him a light shrug and then gently tracing his bicep with her index finger. “But I guess we can learn together. What’s your plan for the rest of the day? Working on the next masterpiece?”

Evie shook her head in response to Owen’s invitation to join him and his friends for a drink, knowing that Beck was on his way over. “You haven’t seen them much since you got back from college, go on. I’ll be fine,” she encouraged, narrowing her eyes at her father, one arm around Chelsea and the other around her younger sister Victoria. His picture perfect all-American family, the brunette thought bitterly to herself, taking a sip of the vodka soda she was drinking - something that she obtained with Owen’s assistance. In just a year, she’d be off to California as long as she got accepted to college there - unless Logan Rhodes got his way yet again and strongarmed her into Yale or Harvard.
“You’re early. Chelsea’s about to give her speech,” Evie mentioned, holding onto Beck’s hands as he held her from behind. “Owen’s gonna cover for us, he’s going by his friend and he’ll just tell Dad and Chelsea that I went with him. How did you get past security, even?” she asked, amazed that he hadn’t gotten caught.
“They sicken me, all three of them,” she vented to her boyfriend, leaning into his embrace. Beck likely shared the same feelings, at least towards the two adults. Victoria was merely a preteen and innocent in everything, but Evie had some misguided frustration that she projected onto her sister. “I just gotta be back by 1 am, that’s when the party dies down and they’d definitely come looking for me and Owen. Where are we going?” she asked excitedly, taking Beck’s hand. She could smell the alcohol and weed on him, only one of which she’d consumed for the night. “I could use something other than vodka, but it’s the only thing I can drink unnoticed.”

@evierhodcs !!!
July 4th, 2007
Beck was a fiend, finding his friends in low places and trying to do every single little thing that would piss his father off, if only because he could and it was the only way to make his father pay attention. Beck knew it was immature, somewhere deep down, but he wasn’t thinking about that at 17 years old. In fact, the only thing he was thinking about was Evie, which was how he ended up ditching his father and his awful family by stealing the keys to his father’s truck and driving over to the richer part of town, just to gatecrash Evie’s stepmother’s party.
When he arrived, he withdrew the fifth of Jack that he had stolen from his uncle, still wrapped in a paper bag, and took a swig from it before stowing it away again as he made his way sneakily through the hedges towards the backyard where Evie’s stepmother was undoubtedly showing off something ridiculous and ostentatious to one of her many party guests. When he finally made his way around to the corner where Evie was, he emerged from the small path between the hedge and the fence and stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms gently around her waist.
He pressed a kiss to the shell of her ear, smelling of whiskey and weed and his father’s cheap aftershave, all soaked into the fibers of the white t-shirt he was wearing. “What do you say we sneak out of here?” he asked, glancing up so that he could keep an eye out for Evie’s father, who had most definitely promised to shoot Beck the next time he caught Beck on his property. Not that Beck particularly cared. “It’s not like the evil stepmother’s gonna notice until it’s too fucking late.”
Beck jingled the keys in his hand. “And I stole the truck,” he said with a grin. “Come on.”

BECK: oh she's fully married
BECK: in my experience people who say they turned out just fine rarely actually turned out just fine
BECK: (i say this as someone who constantly says "i turned out just fine")
EVIE: LOL she sounds like fucking Chelsea. She asked for you the other day btw, I had to endure one of her garden parties.
EVIE: Dammit you're always calling me out aren't you?
EVIE: Okay from a more serious standpoint, I don't know if you should mention it. It may not be your place, and it may get you into a position you're not ready to be in.

closed starter for @casoncohen location: evie’s townhouse, the palacio
Saturday mornings were for sleeping in, whether it be alone or with whatever company she chose to keep the night before - this particular day, it was the latter. As much as Evie was adamant about this having no strings attached, she also didn’t mind letting Cason stay the night as long as he didn’t think it meant they’d be making brunch the next morning together. It wasn’t until she heard barking that she immediately sat up in bed, knowing exactly what Honey’s yapping meant: she wanted food. “Sorry, I forgot to mention this little one,” she apologized to Cason as the Pomeranian came darting into the room, excitedly waiting at the foot of her owner’s bed. Evie reached for the jersey that was closest to her, a Tampa Bay Lightning one, and slipped it on over her head, patting the hard wood floors under the bed in an effort to find the black shorts she had been wearing before she and Cason engaged in their late night activities. “You’re not allergic or anything, are you?” she asked cautiously, hoping that the answer was no.

scottmyricnthous:
Scott was a good dancer, it was something his football coach had encouraged them to do in middle school, an idea that was ridiculed by some of his team members; Scott had gone through most of his life unaffected by what others thought, a lesson his father had taught him before his untimely death. As long as you weren’t doing something bad, you couldn’t do anything wrong — And he enjoyed it too, learning how to control his body in a new way, one that helped him get to his peak. Even now, he could follow a beat and not trip over and while he may have gone to the gala alone, watching others enjoy themselves always brought him joy. Scott had just excused himself to look at his phone, five notification from his son keeping him updated on what he was doing. It was mid-reply that Evie struck up a conversation, his eyes lifting from the screen, to her and briefly to the onlooker behind. “A little less interesting than your night,” The man smiled. “Unwanted attention?” He asked, taking a sip from the beer he had accidentally let go warm after a lengthy conversation. “You’re more than welcome to join me,” The male suggested. “We can loose him, if needs be.”
Tumblr media
“Nice to see you, Scott. How’s everything been?” Evie inquired politely. She and Scott may not run in the same social circles, but he was someone she’d known since childhood. She wouldn’t classify them as friends, but all things considered she had positive feelings toward the man. “It’s been what, twelve years since I last saw you? You know how adulthood gets.” Scott had embraced fatherhood, while Evie went off to college and lived the high life in Los Angeles before returning home for the sake of her mental health. “A colleague of my father’s, he’s been doing this for the past three years,” she explained, rolling her eyes and sighing, glancing back over to see Travis still lurking. “I’ve just been mingling and enjoying the cocktails, the French 75 has been my go-to for years. I highly recommend it if you have yet to try it. How’s your son, by the way?” Evie could not fathom the idea of parenthood at thirty, and she didn’t know how Scott did it as a teenager - it wasn’t her place to judge or question, but it was human nature to do so regardless. “What’s your idea of fun? Maybe I’ll take you up on your offer to join you tonight.”

lexichenderson:
Here was Alexandra drinking champagne and having her judgy eyes scanning the room already. She already brushed off a few men, walking away and rolling her eyes in exasperation at the simple dictionary compliments, “stunning”, “gorgeous”, “elegant”. She was beginning to grow bored. Spotting Evie on the dance floor, however, she lit up. Finally, one of her closest friends was in attendance which meant the fun was just about to begin. “Well, I’m sure Travis won’t mind if I steal you away for a few moments, right?” She asked as she eyed Travis in a very intimidating way as she took the woman’s arm to lead her away. “I’ve tried at least–3 different types of champagne this evening, care to accompany me?”
Tumblr media
Evie linked arms with Lexie as they gracefully glided across to the bar. “Travis is repulsive, but it’s fun to be adored, isn’t it?” she mused aloud, knowing that Lexie would likely understand where she was coming from. “He’s just here giving away attention even though I told him it’s never gonna happen between us, so he can’t blame me for taking advantage of his attention if he’s giving it out so freely.” The women really were two peas in a pod, and Evie never had to refrain from being her truest self around her companion. “Which ones are we trying first? How about the rosé one? It matches my jumpsuit.” Evie studied the bottle, a smile playing upon her lips. “How has your night been, Lex? Better than mine, hopefully. I think Travis has gone elsewhere, so I’m a free woman now. Let’s have some fun.”

open starter @monleonstarters location: monleon memorial hospital charity gala
Evie’s facial expression was rather blank as she danced with her partner, a colleague of her father’s that had always taken somewhat of a liking to the middle Rhodes child. “Mhm, Travis,” she responded nonchalantly as he complimented her on her ravishing beauty - ironically, the same beauty that he made fun of her for using when she was into pageantry. She had to resist every urge to slap him in the middle of the dance floor in the middle of all the gala’s attendees, but thankfully the song ended. Before Travis could ask for other dance, Evie quickly spotted someone out of the corner of her eye. “Sorry, gotta catch up with my friends,” she told him apologetically, faking a contrite smile as she sauntered off and joined the person she had seen. “How’s it going?” she asked, her lips pursed as she saw Travis still observing her movements. “Just came over to say hi - and to avoid a persistent dance partner,” she stated nonchalantly, looking at her chosen company. You better play along, the brunette thought.

magic-ellie:
“I’m not asking you to belive what the cards tell you, darling, that’s entirely up to you” said Ellie, who was no stranger to people not believing in this and thinking they were just pure fantasy and nonesense. “But astrology is more of an art than a science and I think that we all need a little bit of magic in our lives, dont you think?” Many people walked inside her shop, hoping to find a crazy lady who claimed talked with ghost and posessed magical powers, but they found quite the opposite and once they spoke to her, they realized that there was something more out there, and that even when they could not see it, it was present. She could kick out anyone who laughed or pointed a finger at her, telling her she was wrong, but Ellie respected other’s opinions and she was no one to judge in what other people believed in. “But something tells me that deep inside I’m right, or well, the cards are. Or am I wrong?”
Tumblr media
Evie glanced at the woman skeptically, an eyebrow raised. How did she know that the woman behind the counter wasn’t making things up? Evie had built a career on knowing exactly what to say and to whom, it was an easy skill to get by in life with. “I am the magic in my life, lady,” she responded, a confident smirk forming on her lips. Evie Rhodes was extraordinary and would give no one but herself credit as such. “I believe that we control our own fate and destiny. Sure, life deals us all a different hand, but it’s up to us to do something with what we have - or to get more, through whatever means possible. Life’s a game, after all.” Evie paused, tilting her head mysteriously. “I don’t know, I guess we’ll have to see. I better get going now, but... thanks for the reading. We’ll see if it actually works,” she stated, pursing her lips as she willed herself to smile.

Evie spent forever deliberating between a molten lava cake and tiramisu while Lexie ordered, eventually deciding to go with a lemon meringue tartlet from the display menu. She awkwardly stood with her dessert in her hand, not wanting to eat until Lexie had also been served. “That’s what you get for ordering the complicated things on the menu,” Evie teased, craning her neck to get a better view. “They’re arguing over whose wife is better - boooooring. I was hoping for some drama, a cheating scandal. Something more entertaining than this,” she whined, furrowing her brow as they kept going. She made a show of drumming her fingers impatiently against the display counter, narrowing her eyes at the kitchen staff. “Gotta drop the hints that you’re impatient and not someone to fuck with.”

I deserve this little pick me up. Lexie thought to herself as she bought herself a crème brûlée to go. It was her favorite dessert that she often indulged on during stressful times, and this was one of those days. Glancing down at her Apple watch, she semi-patiently waited for them to prepare when she overheard a commotion towards the back. Turning to the woman next to her she says, “Today of all days the chefs want to have a row about their wives while the rest of us out here look like idiots waiting. It has to be Tuesday.”

solismarisol:
“Bitter is one thing but strong smelling might be something you want to rethink.” The brunette said on a tease as she looked the other over. Placing her mouth upon her drink once she received it, she took a healthy sip and sighed. “That’s good.” A simple latte that would get her through the next few hours until she needed some more caffeine. “Thanks.” She said with a nod as she took another sip and shook her head. “I’ve been here for the last few months. Just stopping it for a little bit.” She’d be here for the next set of months before she’d be pushed out of town after extending her stay. It always happened like that.
Tumblr media
“Not that I dislike the coffee smell at all - in fact, I am rather fond of it,” Evie clarified. She may not enjoy the taste of coffee unless it was in a latte or frappuccino form, but the smell was something that agreed with her and she even had a couple of skincare products that incorporated coffee grounds included in her regimen. “Whereabouts are you from? I hope you’re enjoying your time here in Florida,” Evie inquired, studying the other woman carefully. “Though, I’d say that we’d be sad to see you go when you do leave us. Hopefully your next destination is just as enjoyable.” Florida wasn’t for everybody, and Evie acknowledged that. Part of her still longed for her life in Los Angeles, or even her stint while based in Manhattan as the reigning Miss USA. But Monleon was home, whether she liked it or not.

mariahkenmoreblog:
Mariah was a bit shocked when the woman said she thrived in difficult situations. She had heard of people like that, but she never counted on meeting one. “That must be a very resourceful trait. I like to avoid disasters when I can.” Mariah liked to avoid all social interactions if she was honest, but there was no need to share that. She nodded softly as the woman spoke about the differences between matcha and coffee. She didn’t know that her tea had more caffeine in it, but that wasn’t the reason she didn’t like coffee. “I actually don’t like the taste or smell of coffee. It turns my stomach. Even with sugar or that cream stuff it still has this underlying taste of harsh copper or rust even. I just don’t like the flavor or aroma.” she said shaking her head. It mostly applied to when a cup of coffee was in front of her. She wasn’t as bothered standing in a coffee shop with the aroma, but a cup in front of her made her gag on a few occassions. Mariah nodded as she explained her reason for choosing this little cafe in particular and took some sips of her warm drink. “Yes, this is near my job. I work for NASA so it’s not far from here.” she nodded when she realized it was her turn to share. “What do you do for a living?”
Tumblr media
“Avoiding disasters is boring. I live for the thrill and the triumph - wouldn’t be where I was without overcoming adversity,” Evie replied, giving a nonchalant shrug. She didn’t see the sense in staying within one’s comfort zone, how would life be enjoyable that way? “You gotta get the perfect ratios of cream and sugar, or else coffee becomes sickeningly sweet. Might as well have ice cream at that point - tastes better anyway.” Evie raised her eyebrows, a smirk playing on her lips. “NASA, huh? Color me impressed. I work in PR, I’m mostly based in Tampa but sometimes I work in Monleon. Today happened to be one of those days, but it means a shorter commute home. Hey, I gotta get going - a client is supposed to meet me soon. Enjoy your tea and the rest of your day,” she stated, extending her hand. “Evie Rhodes, pleasure to meet you.” You never knew when having a contact in NASA would be useful.
