Piercing Shriekscale
Lifespan: 65 – 80
Diet: A very specific type of bark they rip of Crimson Pine trees, though they are omnivorous and will sometimes go after livestock, and on some occasions even humans.
Fire type: Sonic Blast
Closest relative: Featherhide
Predators: Mostly Deathgripper, even if they aren't native to any island near where the Shriekscales are. The ones hunting them are ones that have escaped the fissure and started hunting around it.
Though, not exactly a predator, but they do get into screaming matches with Thunderdrums over territory space and those usually result in casualties for both the species.
----
Shriekscales are a subspecies of Featherhides that have crossbred with Monstrous Nightmares a very long time ago. Like Featherhides, they are incapable of producing fire, but they do have a very high pitched, disorienting scream in place for protection.
Shriekscales are very good at mimicking the screams and roars of other dragon species, which they use to defend themself or confuse attackers. Some individuals have even started mimicking human screams to attract unsuspecting vikings, to prey on in times of need.
The only way to tell the gender of a Shriekscale is to compare the sizes of chests of two dragons or listen to the noises it produces. Males have larger chest cavities and produce louder and longer screams.
The coloration depends on the temperature the dragon grew up in. The warmer the surroundings the pinker the dragon turns. Colder environment doesn't activate the pigment therefore the dragon stays blue.
As a Shriekscale ages the pink of their scales slowly becomes sun-bleached, therefore every Titanwing of the species will be more of a dusty pink color, than their usual deep rich hot pink. The other, less noticeable, way to tell a Titanwing from an adult is the size of the spines on their tail.
Shriekscales are trainable, but only if the training starts at a very young age. It is incredibly hard to train an adult as they are very skittish and they do not trust humans very much.

Maps and tagging info!!!
I did change the layout a bit, added some things too, but its mostly the same as any map of the archipelago you'd find on the wiki
The hidden world is now a very large torus shaped cave under the archipelago (+ random rushed sketches)
Tagging info!!!!!
Each redesing post will be tagged like this -> Dragon name, dragon type, show of origin (or movie), redesign or headcanon, and then my random thoughts
Dragon types:
#dragon -> four legs
#wyvern -> two legs, wings used as front legs
#chiken -> two legs, wings not used as legs, more akin to birds
#drake -> only legs, no wings
#wyrm -> no legs, both with and without wings
#raptor -> four legs, but only use the back ones to walk, front ones are more like arms, wings
#fish -> any dragon that is mostly or fully aquatic, not dependant on anatomy
#httyd#how to train your dragon#httyd headcanon#btw i will change dragon types for some dragons but it will mostly be changing them from the “chiken” type to wyverns

Vine Tail
Lifespan: 8 – 10 years
Diet: Various fruits, but they are opportunistic omnivores if it comes down to them taking down larger dragons that attacked the group
Fire type: None
Closest relative: Terrible Terror
Predators: The Carnivorous plants of the Nature Realm, or anything that catches them off guard and is bigger.
And although they do not hunt them for food, Deathgrippers search out packs of Vine Tails to "play with", usually to teach their young how to hunt.
----
They are a heavily specialized subspecies of Terrible Terrors that have evolved to live in the forests of the Nature Realm. They are one of a few species of dragons with prehensile tails and opposable thumbs. Though, they have lost the ability to breathe fire and fly. Their wings only good for short distance gliding.
Vine tails are pack animals. They cannot survive on their own. Packs range from 5 to on occasions even 20 individuals.
They are patriarchal, and the strongest one is the leader, which usually means that that specific dragon will be out on lookout most of the day and ready to fight any predators if necessary.
There is not a big difference between the dragons based on their gender. To an untrained eye they might even look the same. But the biggest difference is in their behaviour, with males being more agressive.
They are much more agressive towards humans than any other species of dragon their size would be, as they are unaware of what humans are, and only see them as predators.
There are many Titanwing Vine Tails, they are usually the ones to be the chosen leaders of the group. They are only slightly bigger than a regular Vine Tail and they have larger spines and horns.
There are tales of old, speaking of vikings that lived near the hidden world that managed to raise their own groups of Vine Tails that they would use as a warning system (as they made a lot of noise in the presence of danger) or as pets that would keep the kids safe.

The Screaming Death
Lifespan: 1 – 9 (months) (The oldest one ever was about 18 months old)
Diet: Anything that moves, that isnt its "own" species
Fire type: concentric rings of fire
Closest relative: Whispering Death
Predators: none (mostly because it doesn’t live long enough to be hunted down and there aren't many predators underground anyway)
----
The Screaming Death is a heavily mutated Whispering Death. Screaming Deaths can only be born under extremely specific circumstances and will usually have one or more deformities or genetic mutations.
For a Screaming Death to be born two Titanwing Whispering Deaths have to breed. This almost never happens as it is quite unusual to see more than one Titanwing in a colony. Therefore, the birth of a Screaming death only happens about once each century.
The Screaming Death (from the show) has albinism, polycephaly and other less noticeable deformities, such as abnormal tooth growth.
This dragon is extremely aggressive and will lash out towards anything that is not its own parents. The juvenile is scared and in pain, those being the two biggest factors contributing to its behavior. Its body is slowly shutting down due to its mutations, the polycephaly being the main cause.
There are many dragons that have evolved to be polycephalic naturally (Zipplebacks, Seashocker, etc.). The difference between those and the Whispering Deaths is the length of their neck. Whispering death are not anatomically built to have enough space for a second head to fully form, therefore causing major problems to any offspring that might be born with it.
(Instead of being a little obstacle for Hiccup to fight, it’s actually more of a lesson on how he can’t save everyone and everything. As hard as he tries to get it somewhere safe with its family, he has to come to terms with the fact that the dragon will slowly die even if it isn't even fully grown and there is nothing he can do to save it.)

Flightmare
Lifespan: 40 – 50
Diet: Any type of algae, but mostly just the glowing ones
Fire type: Paralyzing toxic mist
Closest relative: Speedstinger (very, very distant relative, but closer than anything else)
Predators: No dragons hunt them on purpose as they are small and hard to kill. Though, many species will feast on their carcasses as they would with any other dead dragon
----
They are very solitary, you will never see two together unless it's mating season. Females of the species won't even take care of the hatchlings, only watching over them before they hatch. And since they take care of the eggs, they are larger, bulkier and more aggressive.
The color of their scales is very dependent on what type of algae they are currently eating, but it will not change their anatomy. Diet based mutations only occur if a group of dragons stay around the same source for long enough.
Almost every Flightmare becomes a titanwing, the only exclusions being those that get hunted down by humans, heavily injured individuals, or ones with birth defects. The difference between an adult and a titanwing are minimal. Titanwings are usually only slightly bigger and have more spines growing from their body. The biggest difference is the shape of their tail.
Flightmares are not trainable, not even if you hatch them yourself. They will be feral no matter what you do. The babies hatch with a want to survive and no instinct to imprint, so, seeing a large animal (human) surrounding it triggers a fight or flight response, usually resulting in the person being frozen and the dragon long gone.

Armorwing
Lifespan: 50 – 60
Diet: Mostly any animal that wanders way to close to the dragon’s cave.
Fire type: Oxygen-acetylene, or: a special gas mixture these dragons evolved to have to be able to weld the bits of armor
Closest relative: Boneknapper (evolved from the same species, but in different regions requiring different defense mechanism)
Predators: They don’t really have predators per se, but they do tend to fight with Smothering Smokebreaths over their collected metal. However, hatchlings and males during mating season might be picked off by bigger, opportunistic dragons looking for easy prey.
----
Armorwing are a very special species of dragon. People living on island occupied by them will never experience them attacking for food. But one day, any of them might wake up and find that half their roof was torn off and a random assortment of weapons have been stolen from their home. So, usually people of these islands would become quite symbiotic with these dragons, offering broken weapons or shields up to the beasts to prevent more things from being stolen.
Armorwing females are very territorial, so those are usually the ones settling on islands and making their nest there. Males will travel from island to island stealing as much metal as they can, stashing it for when mating season comes.
During this mating season, which happens once every three years. Males will congregate around the female they found and will gift her the best pieces of armor they could find. Usually fights break out and the smaller males end up with their armor completely destroyed, sometimes even dying from injuries.
There are more males than females, and their respective genders are very easy to recognize. Males are smaller and usually have thicker, more functional armor, whereas females are bigger and their armor is more decorative. They usually have more than one type of metal welded to their body. The more gold a female has on her body the older she usually is, as she has gone through more mating seasons and has been gifted more of it.
Since males are smaller and usually have less armor on, they are still capable of regular flight. Though, it is harder for them to fly large distances. Females almost never fly as it takes way more strength to do so. The only time a female will fly, is to get away from dragons attacking her or if she jumps of a ledge to get down to sea level faster. Usually, they have enough strength to fly for about two minutes, with all the metal dragging them down.
Most titanwings of the species are female. The difference between a regular adult and a titanwing isn't very noticeable. They look very similar physically; except they grow a second pair of horns and barbells. The main difference is their behavior. Titanswings become even more territorial and agressive, willing to fight any other species of dragon, or even males waiting around for mating season to start.
They are no longer willing to breed and only use the waiting males as “prey”. They will violently attack them and rip off as much armor as they can to expand their collection

Hideous Heatwing
Did i mention i was going to redesign every species, even the ones from the babby show
Lifespan: 70 – 80
Diet: Fish, sheep, but they prefer larger prey like yak
Fire type: Kerosene gel, except they do not use it to set themselves on fire like Monstrous Nightmares do. Their skin is naturally hot enough to burn a human.
Closest relative: Monstrous Nightmare
Predators: Mostly any Fury subspecies and Deathgrippers. Though, most Heatwing populations live far enough to where predators are almost never a problem.
----
Basically, just Monstrous Nightmares of the south. They serve the same purpose, be big, scary, and territorial with others of your species. Though, seeing as Heatwings are less likely to be killed by predators, they are much calmer and more peaceful.
They are easy to train but hard to ride. Their skin is too hot for regular leather saddles, requiring gronckle-iron chainmail to be placed on the dragon first, with the seat also being reinforced with the material. The rider can only hold onto the dragons' horns as those are an acceptable temperature.
These reasons are mostly why Heatwings are used more as portable heaters than actual dragons for riding. They are fine with that being the case as they are being taken care of.
It is actually quite common to see titanwing Heatwings. They are only recognizable by the sharper horns and larger spines. Though, most people inexperienced with this species might mistake a titanwing male for a regular adult female because of the spines.
Titanwings are only a tad bit more aggressive but are still easily trainable if given the respect and space they require. The only problem with owning a titanwing is that they produce larger amounts of the flammable gel, which they will happily set on fire if they feel like their stable is too cold. Usually resulting in half the building being set on fire. That’s why most people who own them keep them in stables carved into mountain sides, with minimal amounts of wood.
!Sidenote!
I'm aware that I'm not the first one to redesign the RR dragons to fit the httyd universe more. Though, I'm coming at this from a "how can i make all of them a subspecies of a more recognizable dragon somehow" angle. So, hopefully they are not going to be too similar to other peoples designs :3

Jörmungandr
Lifespan: ???
Diet: The Death Queens
Fire type: None
Closest relative: Unknown
Predators: None
----
Queen Killer, also dubbed Jörmungandr or the world serpent by those whose seen its immense size, is a dragon thought to be a legend.
It is the largest known "species" of dragon ever witnessed. There is only one known Queen Killer in the archipelago, though it is suspected that there could be more in different parts of the world.
It is unknown whether it is a female or male, how old it is, where it came from and how has it survived for so long.
This dragon lives deep in the ocean, hibernating until it becomes hungry once more. When that happens and the dragon wakes, it goes on a search for its next meal.
Once it finds a queen it uses its large head to smash the queen's island to bits, luring the queen out. The large fin like structures on the sides of its head unfurl and begin to glow, symbolizing the dragon readying to strike.
Most queens choose to fight back, but are usually incapacitated by the serpent wrapping itself around them and crushing them to death. Afterwards they swallow their pray whole and return to the oceal.
The cycle repeats every a hundred years or so. Meaning that even catching a glimpse of the beast is an achievement of a lifetime.

The Scuttleclaw
Natural Lifespan: 50 – 60 years
Average Lifespan: 5– 15 years
Diet: Fish
Fire type: Green copper fire
Closest relative: Deadly Nadder
Predators: Everything that’s bigger, faster or sneakier than them (So, basically almost everything)
----
Their coloring is sex based. Females have earthly tones as to blend in their environment when they're sitting on their clutch. Males are more colorful as a display for the females. They do not mate for life. The females only take care of their young for up to a year, max two years, afterward they seek out another male to reproduce with.
They work a lot like chickens, laying unfertilized eggs at least once a month. Therefore, some clans keep them as stock. Other clans see it as cruel to keep them as farm animals.
Unless kept as a farm animal or a mode of transport, having their owner be the one to protect them. These dragons are known for being the main food source for other dragon-eating dragons. They are usually compared to rats; they breed fast and they’re everywhere. No island is void of their loud squawking.
The males are usually the ones to get hunted first because their coloring, but the females aren’t safe either. Their camouflage is good enough to trick only some species. Once they’re spotted, they do not have a way to protect themselves against most dragons. Their talons and teeth are the only thing they can use to defend themselves, but they do not succeed most of the time. Their fire, despite its green coloring, is quite low temperature, only being 1000°C. These temperatures aren’t enough to disable predators, only deter them for short amounts of time.
#scuttleclaw#chiken#httyd#httyd redesign#redesign#how to train your dragon#unfun fact of the post#these things do not have a single canon adult design outside of the games#and the titan wing designs for them are not even similar in them#the rise of berk ones have spots and the SoD ones have stripes and spikes on their head instead of spines#second unfun fact#the fandom wiki (hate that i have to use it)#states that the hatchling scuttleclaws are 5 and a half meters long with a wingspan of 6 meters#insane btw

First post on da sideblog!!!
The Fireworm/ The Fireworm Queen
Lifespan: 60 - 80 years
Diet: Honeycomb
Fire type: Napalm-like gel
Closest relative: Thunderpede
Predators: Cavern crashers and Whispering Deaths (mostly a danger to the eggs and the males)
----
The Queen only produces fertilized eggs and therefore reproduces asexually. These eggs are laid in clutches similar to that of snakes and are laid on a daily basis.
Once a queen reaches a certain point in her life, she will be able to lay a single, much larger egg that contains the next queen. She can only lay this egg once and never again as it takes very long for this egg to form and the queens who lay their first "queen egg" are usually way too old to live until their second attempt.
Some queens might never even produce their first queen egg or might have it destroyed by predators. In that case, they will try as hard as they can to keep their colony alive. Some daughterless queens might become Titanwings, but it's unlikely as they usually die of exhaustion and old age before that.
