I don't like Reaver, but I shit you not I have only read 2 good fable fics. One was so old that fable 3 had not came out yet, and the other was a Sparrow Hammer one shot.

Work got me so exhausted that I cried when I got home and tried to find new Fable/Reaver fanfiction I could read, and then realized I've already read and then reread all the good ones a million times over already. Then I cried again after I felt an intense need to write my own, only to try and find myself so exhausted that I couldn't even spell Bowerstone right...adulthood sucks, yall.

Logan and the HoBW both died alone and forgotten.

Ever think about that?

Logan's whole life was built for the throne. For his kingdom, he bore every burden. When it came to the Darkness, it consumed him, and by the end of it there was nothing left to amount to his efforts. He had done no good for the kingdom, besides let his sibling take over and build a better future. Only then was he able to be free of it.

His sibling, however? They had to fill shoes from the moment they were born. The last hero child, succeeding Sparrow. Always looking up to them, always aspiring to become worthy of such a name. Their whole life became dedicated to fighting the good fight, and building a better Albion. A hero to their core... Even if it meant bearing the weight of the kingdom on their own. Logan didn't matter, and they had no one else at their side by the end of it.

Not Walter, not their allies, and not even Jasper...

Both end up going their own ways, never really having anything that bound them together. Nothing but a family name.

But for those two, I think loneliness feels less like a loss, than a constant emptiness in their lives. Parent dead, loved ones dead, and so many lost along the way. They're used to it.

But I do think that their duty, their sacrifices, and their constant fight for a better tomorrow gave the HoBW purpose. What else did they have? So, when a war in Samarkand breaks out, they feel an immediate call to battle it's tyranny. How could they not? Even when they were outnumbered, and their troops retreated, they marched on.

They were never heard from again after that. To Albion, they, and their legacy, had died. The kingdom crumbled without a leader, and the country scrambled.

For Logan... everything was gone. All the efforts and sacrifices made by his family amounted to nothing. The one family he did have by the end of it amounted to nothing. All dust in his fingers. A distant memory, now worth nothing. He can roam the lands freely, untethered by the weight of his legacy... But what else is there?

The memory of the tyrant king fades. The hero monarch, a bitter mystery. Life moves on.

...

Far off in Samarkand, in that cold, dark cell... the HoBW rotted in silence.

All they'd ever hoped to be, every sacrifice they'd made, and the future they gave everything for seemed unreal. It mattered to them not that long ago... They know that. They know they left their mark. They know they did something with their life... But at what cost?

Maybe this is how Logan felt. Maybe the endless pursuit of greatness, in whatever form that takes, just demands more and more of oneself.

Maybe this is how Sparrow felt... the great, insurmountable, faceless savior they strived to be. And for living in the shadow of that legacy, both of Sparrow's children lost themselves.

In the fight for the future of Albion, each of them lost everything. Their family, their legacy, and that future they dreamed of...

Perhaps the hero's journey shouldn't be woven as a great tale. As it so often is, by those who only live to reap it's benefits.

Perhaps the reward being greater than the cost justified the stories. (cough theresa cough)

How else would people keep fighting the endless fight, if the disillusionment hadn't set it?

When it does, as it always does, it is too late to turn back. What's done is done, and whatever is left is their responsibility to deal with.

Including the emptiness left behind.
