maybe it was just because you guys were best friends ⸝⸝ 𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝒉𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒚 (pt. 1)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
a/n: the rodrick heffley hyperfixation is coming back so you already know how EXTRA i'm going to be with this... expect more of rodrick to come haha context: you're rodrick's best friend and you came to see greg's play--in which rodrick embarrasses him by bringing a camera (you already know this scene) warnings: tad bit of swearing, rodrick is kinda clingy, reader is the opposite of rodrick (i made her similar to rory gilmore if you can't already tell by the banner!) wordcount: 2.7k
Tumblr media
you and rodrick have been best friends ever since you could read–meaning the two of you had been stuck together since childhood.
your family was next door neighbours with the heffley’s, meaning that you often spent a lot of time with them.
it was a chilly afternoon of early february as you had your nose dug into a book while your dominant hand absentmindedly scribbled doodles into your journal.
It was a saturday so you didn’t have anything better to do.
you could hang out with rodrick, but he was having band practice and he didn’t ask you to come watch yesterday–so you thought it’d be rude to come uninvited.
besides that, you spent the entirety of yesterday with him anyway. rodrick, the “evil” older brother that he was, was scheming ways to humiliate greg for his play today of the wizard of oz–but had no idea on just what to do.
and so, you brought up how your mom used to record you during your old plays in elementary, how embarrassed you used to feel.
when you told him that, however, the look on his face lit up like it was the cure to cancer or something.
you didn’t expect rodrick to take that advice seriously because it was merely just a story, but he prepared his dad’s digital camera anyway.
“sweetie!” your mom knocked on the door before opening it, her lips curving up into a warm smile which you were all too familiar about.
as she leaned against the doorframe, she looked over at you with her arms pressing against her chest.
“your father and I are going on a little date tonight, think you can stay home alone or do you want me to ask susan if you can stay over?”
“mmm, maybe ask mrs. heffley–only if she doesn’t mind though.” you said considerately as your mom smiled and left your room.
placing your bookmark inbetween the two pages you were on in your book, you tidied up your desk before eventually getting up to stretch.
it was probably around 4:30 or so and you were still feeling a little bored.
unlike other teenagers in your grade, your parents didn’t trust you with a phone which you honestly thought was for the best given how distracted rodrick easily got with his.
rodrick.
you wondered when his band practice would end. it usually ended late at night but given that mrs. heffley was mostly likely forcing the entire family to come to greg’s school play that evening, you were sure his band would end practice soon enough. “honey, get ready! we’re leaving soon!” your mom called from downstairs as that only rushed you to start picking out the clothes you were gonna wear. it was guaranteed you’d be attending the play too.
“did susan say yes??!” you shouted back to your mom as you closed your door, changing into some jeans and a light blue long-sleeved top with a sheer panel across the shoulders and chest.
“yep, come on, pumpkin!” your dad called out from downstairs as well, causing you to panic and get ready even faster.
you put on some lip-gloss and did a coat of mascara before clipping some portions of your hair back in a half-up half-down style.
“honey!” your mom called out again as you immediately turned the light off in your room and swiftly left, making your way down the stairs.
“I’m coming, I’m coming!” you giggled as your parents stood by the door, ready to go as they had on their coats and winter wear already.
“come on! reservation is at 5:30, we don’t got all day missy.” your mom hummed playfully as you slung your black coat on with a purple scarf, slipping into your chestnut uggs.
“okayyy, what are you guys waiting for? let’s get in the car. ” you smiled, leaving the house first before them as you hurried over to the suv your dad drove.
Tumblr media
a little later you were dropped off at the front porch of the heffley’s as you rang the doorbell, your hands held together as you patiently waited for someone to greet you.
though even from outside the door, you could hear the distinct chaotic voices of the family living in the house.
you could tell that rodrick did something to greg again as mrs. heffley’s voice was the loudest out of all of them.
given that it was a little chillier out, you rang the doorbell again–which was something you never really did–so in a matter of seconds, the door swung open.
“h-hey!” greg said with a dorky smile spreading across his face.
he was getting a little taller by the years, it made you realize how much time had passed.
“hey, may I come in? It’s freezing.” you said with a breathy chuckle as he made space for you to enter, giving you time to take your boots and winter coat off.
“I didn’t know you were coming over today…?” greg mumbled with a slight hint of trepidation given that he was going to perform in a play in about an hour.
“well my parents are going on a date and your mom said she’d watch me.” you replied casually, unwrapping the scarf off your neck as greg guided you to the living room.
you flopped down on the couch as he settled down on the ground, looking up at you.
“ohhh, but aren’t you already too old to be babysat?” greg said a little bluntly, causing you to let out a small chuckle in amusement.
“babysat?” rodrick repeated greg’s words with a smirk on his face, leaning against the doorframe from the hallway that led to the kitchen.
but as his gaze averted to the sight of you, he hurried over and tackled you on the couch, ruffling up your hair.
“hey you dork! why didn’t you come see me play today?” rodrick huffed, his actions were always so touchy and forward when it came to you.
it was a little ironic really because he was a complete loser when it came to other girls that weren’t you.
perhaps he thought of you differently, or maybe it was just because you guys were best friends.
“well you didn’t ask me to yesterday so I thought it was some private practice or something…” you shrugged your shoulders lightly, giving him the opportunity to capture you in a playful headlock.
you couldn’t help but giggle as he did this, causing you to try and swat him away but he wouldn’t budge.
“since when were my band practices private when it came to you? I told you were my special spectator, didn’t I?”
“spectator.. ooh, big words rodrick, big words.”
“hey are you indirectly calling me dumb?”
mrs. heffley entered the room, instantly noticing the proximity between rodrick and you.
it was common to see them all close with each other, almost as if it was a natural thing to do.
however, she still couldn’t help but smirk at the sight of the two adolescents.
they were a stark difference to each other, with rodrick in a band shirt and messed up hair while your hair was neatly done and wore freshly cleaned clothes.
“hey sweetie, it’s lovely to see you!” mrs. heffley hummed as your head instantly turned to look at the woman.
“hi mrs. heffley, thanks for having me over.” you smiled in turn, getting out of your spot beside rodrick–who followed behind you–towards mrs. heffley.
“it’s my pleasure! we always love having you over, especially a special someone.” the woman smirked smugly, winking her eye in an obvious manner as rodrick mumbled under his breath in embarrassment.
you couldn’t help but laugh at this exchange as you shrugged your shoulders and slipped your thumbs through the belt loops of your jeans.
“mom it’s almost 5:30, I’m supposed to be at school by now!” greg panicked as all their attention shifted to him, watching as he ran out the room towards the stairs to get changed.
“goodness…! oh, sweetheart, would you and rodrick watch over manny for me while I go get changed?”
“of course, mrs. heffley.” you chuckled, looking up at rodrick as your eyes met, sharing a smile with each other.
as mrs. heffley left the living room to head upstairs to wear something more presentable for the play, you and rodrick made your way over to the kitchen where manny was eating a snack at his high chair.
“hey manny!!” you smiled, bending down to his level to greet the toddler who babbled in excitement at the sight of you.
manny picked up a baby carrot from his tray, handing it over to you as you gratefully accepted it.
“hey that food’s supposed to be for manny, shortstack.” rodrick smirked, taking a carrot of his own from his baby brother’s tray though manny smacked his hand in the process.
“watch it little dude..!” rodrick huffed, causing you to chuckle at that.
“careful, that’s stealing.”
“oh, as if you aren’t eating manny’s carrot yourself.”
“he was sharing it with me, there’s a difference.” you said in a playful matter-of-fact tone before he shoved his carrot between your lips.
you rolled your eyes in response, taking a bite of the carrot regardless as you looked up at him in a mix of fluster and annoyance whereas he was looking down at you with a shit-eating grin on his face.
"aww, looks like someone's getting a bit grumpy.. how cute.” rodrick said smugly as your cheeks heated up, causing you to bite down on his fingers in which he yelped.
“you’re evil, you.. you woman!” he stuttered, bringing his injured fingers to his chin as he hid it away from you, making you giggle in satisfaction.
"hey I’m not evil, I'm just tired of that conceited grin on your face." you said defiantly, trying to cover up the fact that him feeding you that carrot was getting you a little flustered.
“conceited??? is that another word for charming? how generous of you, shortstack.” rodrick smirked while you rolled your eyes in disbelief.
“ha ha, very witty. finding every opportunity you can to boost your ego, huh?”
“I’ll pretend to act like I know what that means.”
“rodrick..”
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding, you think I’m that dumb?” he sniggered, crossing his arms.
“did you get the camera ready?” you sighed, pursing your lips to the side as you glanced up at him with a little smirk.
“I knew I was forgetting something! bless your pretty little head, c’mon, let’s go to my room–”
“and manny?”
“oh, right, I mean I’ll go to my room. I’ll be back quickly, swear!”
you watched as he left the kitchen quickly, a smile plastering on your lips before you looked down at manny with a soft sigh escaping your lips.
“lemme clean you up, little guy.” you hummed, taking his bib off as you grabbed a napkin to clean his mouth.
Tumblr media
mrs heffley, mr heffley, manny, rodrick, and you were situated at the crowd of families that went to go watch the play act out.
it was busy alright, but you couldn’t help but feel a little excited to see the play take place.
you enjoyed seeing entertainment, so how bad could little kids performing the wizard of oz be?
before the curtains opened, rodrick took out the digital camera he had mentioned from earlier.
after he finished setting it up, he wrapped his arm around your shoulder as he scooted you closer to him.
"god, you shouldn’t have come y’know? I just know this’ll suck.” he murmured as your turned your head to look at him.
you felt a little shy at how close your faces were and it seemed as though he noticed it took as his cheeks turned into a shade of pink, causing him to clear his throat and avert his gaze towards the stage.
but as the first scene played out, you couldn’t help but awe at how adorable the girl who played dorothy looked in her blue plaided dress.
you were quiet the whole time, your attention focused on the stage in front of them as you forgot all about your surroundings.
rodrick, on the other hand, had noticed your engrossed appearance as he rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, leaning over towards you.
"ugh, this is so dumb… why are you getting so into it..?" he whispered over to you, his eyes trained on the play.
“cause it’s adorable, mind you. you’re lucky you’ve got younger siblings.” you chuckled quietly.
though as the scene continued, rodrick still had his body pressed against yours, and so you instinctively rested your head on his shoulder.
"adorable? no. obnoxious and annoying? yes.” he joked, rolling his eyes. he felt your head on his shoulder, and smiled to himself.
trying to be slick, (in which he literally never is) rodrick wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling you closer to him.
"and trust me, you do NOT want siblings… It sucks ass.." he murmured as you let out a chuckle.
rodrick felt comfortable being close to you like this. It was nice, considering he was a bit more of a.. 'physical' kinda guy.
he liked having some physical interaction. physical affection. physical ANYTHING.
he pulled you a bit closer, his hand tightening on your waist absentmindedly. however you didn’t fail to notice as your own cheeks were heating up.
thank god the lights were directly on the stage or rodrick would see how beet red you looked at the moment.
"why is everyone else so obsessed with this anyway..?" he groaned, referring to the play.
“because it’s adorable seeing these little kids perform. c’mon, have some mercy, rodrick. everyone starts somewhere before they’re majorly talented, y’know, like how you are with löded diper.”
"oh please don't put Greg's acting in the same category as my band. PLEASE."
rodrick looked down at you, admiring your face as you watched the play with all that attention and fascination in your expression.
rodrick continued to watch you, he really couldn't care less about the talent show, and more about how adorable you were.
he felt a bit of a possessive feeling wash over him, and he moved his hand from your waist, to your hip.
he rubbed it with his thumb, and pulled you even CLOSER. closer than you already were.
“keep pulling us closer and we’ll mold like clay, rodrick. it’s hot in here with all the heaters,” you tore your eyes away from the stage as you looked up at him again.
rodrick chuckled, a smirk on his face. he held your gaze for a moment, before his hand moved down to your thigh.
it’s safe to say that he was feeling INCREDIBLY confident today.
"you act like that's a bad thing, or something." he jokingly said. he was a bit surprised at how easily he could be so… 'touchy' with you considering you guys were just best friends.
perhaps he thought of you differently, or maybe it was just because you guys were best friends.
his thoughts started to wander a bit, and his gaze shifted back to your face. he couldn't help it, he found you extremely attractive.
but not only that, you were his best friend–he already loved everything about you.
he knew it might end badly to start something like this with one of his best friends, but his feelings for you were getting the best of him…
“BUBBY!!” manny babbled out, turning everyone’s attention from the stage to manny, then back to the stage again where greg looked nothing but humiliated.
laughter filled the crowd, but rodrick’s was the loudest as he took out his digital camera.
he was embarrassed for his little brother, and he was already waiting to make fun of him for it later.
he was definitely going to be teasing him about playing a DAMN TREE for a long ass time..
“oh god.. he looks ridiculous..” you whispered, releasing a fit of soft laughter at greg’s mortified expression.
"I know, right?" rodrick snickered, starting to film and pointed the camera directly at greg who caught onto what he was doing.
he was trying really hard to hold back his laughter, seeing his little brother getting embarrassed like this was too good to be true.
"he looks like an absolute idiot.. I'm going to tease him about this forever," rodrick snickered, you still giggling away by his side.

milkshakes & bickers ⸝⸝ 𝒅𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒏
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
a/n: okay so i lowkey disliked this one so i didn’t proof read it im sorry y’all
warnings: bit of swearing, hair pulling if you squint (that’s all i think?)
wordcount: 1.5k
Tumblr media
since summer break started, your schedule was free along with your younger brother ponyboy. you never really understood why he hung out with dallas but johnny was understandable.
you had been tagging along whenever they’d hang out recently, though whenever you did, he’d spend more time with johnny than he did with you.
leaving you with dallas winston.
dallas was always giving you a hard time, constantly irritating you to no end. he was insufferable and annoying since the day you guys met, it was almost comical really–but you would never admit that. his ego didn’t need anymore inflating.
currently, you were at home reading a book in the living room. your stomach laid on the floor as two-bit was sitting beside you, fully indulged in whatever was playing on the television.
the screen door opened as loud footsteps carried into the house, assuming it was more than one person.
you didn’t bother to look up as the loud noise made you reread the sentence you were currently on, but as you were about to read the next one, a hand moved down and swiped the book from you in a swift movement.
“the hell!” you huffed, looking up at the culprit.
and surely enough, it was dallas with that damn smug smirk on his face. he waved the book in front of your face, keeping it out of your reach but you made no effort on trying to get it back.
“always nose-deep in a damn book, you ever do somethin’ normal for once?’
“this is normal, y’hoodlum. ain’t my fault the only thing you read is the damn label on your cigarettes.” you retorted.
that made dallas’ smirk widen, hiding the book under his pit as he settled down on the couch behind you, “smart-ass.”
you bristled at his ability to be so flippant as you scrunched your nose up, sitting up from your spot on the floor to face him.
dallas noticed the look on your face as he couldn’t hold back a snicker, “lookin’ like y’got your panties in a twist, y’good princess?”
“piss off, hood,” you said huffed in blatant annoyance.
“what are we talkin’ ‘bout, now?” two-bit chimed in, a smirk on his face as he glanced between you and dallas.
the mickey mouse episode he had been watching came to an end as his attention was brought to the bickering teenagers.
dally just huffed, the smug expression still evident on his face. “just playin’ around. lil’ lady o’er here is actin’ all bummy though.”
two-bit chuckled, raising an eyebrow at dallas. “ain’t that just the usual, then? our lil’ miss ain’t ever up for y’banter.”
“he’s twistin’ it around, two-bit! I was just mindin’ my damn business, he started it!” you objected.
"me, start it?" dally smirked, his smugness growing by the second as he dragged you over towards him as he slipped his hands under your arms.
“asshole!” you huffed, trying to slap his hands off as two-bit snickered in amusement.
two-bit continued to laugh at the both of you, obviously enjoying himself. "y'all are like a bickering old married couple," he drawled, turning the television off. "always going at it like cats and dogs."
“like hell i’d ever get married to this jerk!” you grumbled in annoyance as dallas continued to drag you over.
dallas tried to hide his smirk as your irritation just fueled his amusement even more.
you now had your back pressed against dallas’ legs as he repositioned his hand so that it was resting on the couch head.
“eugh– your pants are all dirty.” your huffed, trying to move away but his free hand moved down to tug on your hair to keep you in place.
he laughed, loving how easy it was to get a rise out of her. "nah-uh-uh," he taunted. "this is what you get for that attitude of yours.”
you rolled your eyes, your cheeks flushing with a mix of annoyance and embarrassment. it was infuriating how he always knew just how to get under your skin.
but you were stubborn, and you weren’t going to give in so easily. "I ain't apologizing for something you deserved, dallas. you’re bein’ a jackass as usual."
dally's cocky smirk grew wider as she shot back at him. he loved it when she got feisty. “oh, really?" he said, raising an eyebrow. "and how was I bein' a jackass this time, huh?"
but before you could open your mouth to retort, ponyboy and johnny entered the room from the kitchen as you weren’t even aware that they were here.
ponyboy raised an eyebrow at the scene–dallas having his hand gripping your hair as you sat by his feet, trying to swat him away, two-bit on the floor watching the two of you like it was some soap opera.
“uh... johnny and I were thinkin’ about hittin’ the dingo, wanted to see if y’all wanted ‘ta come with.” ponyboy murmured awkwardly as johnny drifted his eyes away.
“hell yeah! It’s damn hot in this house,” two-bit grinned as he stretched and got up from his spot on the floor.
“cut it out, dal!” you huffed, finally getting his hand to tug away from your hair as you went to fix it up.
dallas, however, kept that smirk on his face as he got up from the couch to help you get up–in which you reluctantly accepted his offer.
Tumblr media
given that it was a sunny saturday afternoon, the inside of the dingo was crowded.
music blared by the jukebox in the corner, and the area was filled with people laughing at booths, kissing, and drinking beer or shakes to balance out the hot weather.
dallas scanned the crowded room, searching for any familiar faces. he had just gotten into an argument with tim shepherd a little while ago so he didn’t want anything to do with him.
“anyone in there?” you murmured, playfully knocking on dallas’ head as the man averted his gaze to you.
“hey– watch it!” he grumbled, your lips starting to curve up into the form of an amused smirk.
but before he could get you back, you were already hurrying off to the booth where two-bit, johnny, and ponyboy were at.
dallas reluctantly followed behind you as the two of you made your way over to the others. two-bit was spouting nonsense like he always did while johnny and ponyboy were blowing off the paper wrapper from their straws at a waitress.
“cut it out, pony.” you warned your little brother as you slid next to him on the booth with dallas sitting in front of you.
soon enough, the table shifted to a fit of laughter and lighthearted conversations between the five of them.
though as you laughed at something two-bit had said, dallas brushed his foot against your ankle, making you stiffen and send him a confused glare.
dallas smirked smugly in turn before he brought two-bit’s attention away from the girl, talking about something else to purposely leave you out.
“asshole.” you muttered, resting your chin on your palm as you copied his previous actions by brushing your own foot against his ankle.
dallas stuttered mid-conversation as he tried to play it off cool by leaning against his seat, taking out a cigarette as he lit it up.
“hey, no smoking!” a grumpy old waitress nudged him as she suddenly stood by the booth to take their orders.
you all ordered the same thing, some burger, fries, colas—while you got a milkshake.
you’ve got a taste of the milkshakes at the dingo before and they were probably the best thing on the menu. a cold strawberry-milk blend with some whipped cream along with a pretty little cherry on top. perfect for a hot day.
time passed and you all eventually got your orders. two-bit and ponyboy spent no time digging into their meals as johnny and dallas went at the same pace.
meanwhile you were so occupied with your milkshake, eating some fries here and there as you took a sip in between your swallows.
you encircled your lips around the plastic straw, taking in the delicious, creamy flavour of the milkshake.
it was heavenly, one of the best things to ever exist as you continued taking a sip of it, your food neglected.
all the while dallas had been watching you, his eyes staring right at you like a hawk.
two-bit, of course, would never let this opportunity pass as he cackled loudly, all their eyes averting to him.
“what’s your problem, man? y’got everyone starin’.” dallas grumbled in confusion.
“nothin’s my problem, what’d you got with her though? can’t seem to take your eyes off o’ her.” two-bit sniggered as you raised your eyebrows.
dallas kicked two-bit’s foot underneath the table, taking an aggressive swing from his cola.
“dunno what you’re takin’ about, man. just eat your damn food, you’re hallucinatin.”
but you caught on as a smile found your lips, your gaze averting over to dallas who you caught staring at you.
but he didn’t look away, his eyes still on you as yours stayed on him.
just then, two-bit let out a wolf whistle, causing the two of you to blush and look away.

seeing the stars ⸝⸝ 𝒅𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒚 𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒔
Tumblr media
a/n: first fanfic yet so don't expect me to be the best at this LOL...
READER IS THE CURTIS’ SISTER! -- sodapop's age. little bit of angst but mostly fluff!!
warnings: sibling arguments, mentions of death, bit of swearing, darry is overprotective wordcount: 2.5k
Tumblr media
ever since your parents died, it’d been nothing but barriers and iron walls between you and your freedom – thanks to your older brother darry.
it wasn’t like he was purposely trying to be hard on you, but the abrupt weight on his shoulders tore your once sibling bond into nothing but mindless arguments.
it was just the end of exam season, a clear night from clouds and may’s rain as june’s summer awakened.
your brothers, sodapop and ponyboy, were dragging you along to see the stars tonight as steve had showed a place to sodapop a little miles out of the city.
but because of the distance, darry disapproved like he always did, finding it unreasonable for a teenage girl to be going out to just see the damn stars.
“please, dar, it ain’t fair! I ain’t even goin’ alone, soda and pony are with me… you can even come with!” you pleaded, staring down at your older brother who was manspreaded on his armchair, newspaper in hand.
“you ain’t listenin, I told you no, ‘nd no means no.” darry murmured, his eyes refusing to look up at hers as he knew she’d be wearing that pleading pout on her face.
you let out a groan of annoyance that was starting to build up from darry’s indifference, your arms crossing against your chest as you began to pace around.
“but… but soda said the stars twinkle brighter, the air smells fresher, and the grass feels all nice and mowed. he’s looking after me, don’t you trust him?” you said, trying to find ways to convince darry.
darry simply folded his newspaper, his eyes trailed on a headline as he quipped, “and soda’s the same person that picked you up two hours later than he promised.”
“an hour and a half! that was just one time, darry. you know that soda didn’ mean to be tardy, he said the dx was busy that day.” you retorted, but it was no use.
“one more damn word from you, young lady, and you ain’t goin out at all this summer.”
“but that ain’t fair at all! you’re gettin’ all worked up over me seein’ stars with soda and pony! why ain’t you just wanna tag along??”
“because they’re just damn stars, look out your window, we’ve got a ton of ‘em.” darry hummed indifferently, lowering his newspaper a little so he could look at you.
you whined in response to that, looking down at him with a glare of pent up frustration and annoyance at how he always shut you down.
“it ain’t the same, darry! why can’t you just let me go out!!”
darry set his newspaper down on his side this time, letting out a deep breath as he stared up at you in disapproval.
“If you really wanna go out over some damn stars then ponyboy and sodapop can see 'em for you,” he hummed as his gaze firmed.
“why are you bein’ so mean!” you cried out.
darry let out another sigh, knowing exactly what you were doing.
he grabbed the newspaper that he set by his side, tossing it onto the coffee table as he gave you his full attention.
"I ain't bein’ mean! i’m just being a good big brother. it ain't safe for a girl to be out at night alone, you know that," he retorted.
“alone? alone? I just said i’m goin with soda and pony, i’m not gonna be alone, they’re with me!” you pleaded, gesturing to the window where their brothers were waiting by the porch.
darry let out an exasperated sigh, running a hand through his hair.
"those two? I can hardly trust them with themselves sometimes, let alone lookin' after you. It's a hard no, kiddo," he said sternly, shaking his head.
“you’re such a darn killjoy!” you whined, looking at darry one last time before you began to cry.
in a swift movement, you turned on your heel as you ran to your bedroom–slamming the door behind you.
darry’s eyebrows furrowed as you stomped off to your room and slammed the door.
he sighed in frustration, pinching the bridge of his nose and looking up at the ceiling, mumbling to himself.
"christ, she's always such a pain. can’t she just listen to me for once?" he muttered, unaware of sodapop who reentered the house to see what was taking you so long.
noticing that it was only darry in the room, he let out a sigh, all aware of what had probably stirred up during his absence.
“you were bein’ a little hard on her again weren’t you, dal? c’mon… she just wants to go out and see some stars," sodapop said tentatively.
darry sighed, folding his arms across his chest. "she’s sixteen, not five. she shouldn't be throwin' tantrums like a damn kid 'cause I won't let her go see some stars. it’s not safe this time around," he retorted.
"but it's a summer night. can’t she just have a little fun? she’s been studyin to no end just a week ago," sodapop coaxed him whilst giving darry a pleading look.
darry’s resolve was cracking at the looks on his younger brother’s face, but he refused to give in so easily.
"i said no and that's final," darry said stubbornly.
sodapop now had a discouraged look on his face, knowing how stubborn darry could be. but he too wouldn’t give up.
it was only then that ponyboy joined the conversation, the two unaware he had come inside during their bicker.
“c’mon, dar.. she's been cooped up here for weeks now. she deserves a little break.” ponyboy chimed in, rubbing his arm.
he was still feeling wary around darry given that he was the oldest brother.
darry let out a frustrated huff, running a hand through his hair again.
he was starting to feel outnumbered by his siblings, and it was starting to wear him down.
"It's not about what she deserves. It's about what's safe for her," he retorted.
“exams finally ended and she’s been studying with no end, you know that. don’cha feel even a little bad ‘bout the pressure she puts on herself?” sodapop quipped, mirroring darry’s pose as he too crossed his arms against his chest.
sodapop could tell that darry was starting to come around, so he continued to press on.
"and it’s not like we're going to a party or anything. just gonna go out to the pasture and look up at the sky. it’s a clear night and there's supposed to be a ton of stars visible in the countryside," sodapop reasoned.
darry remained silent for a moment, mulling it over in his head.
he knew soda had a point.
it was just stargazing, not like you'd be going to some wild party.
“why can’t you come with? so you know she’s safe. all four of us could go, you know, all of us ain’ gone out in a while…”
ponyboy suggested, rubbing his arm awkwardly as he failed to meet darry’s eyes.
the two didn’t have much of a good relationship, making the younger boy all the more nervous.
darry looked between sodapop and ponyboy as they proposed their idea.
he had to admit, having all four of them going would make him feel a little better about letting you go.
he let out a sigh, running a hand over his face. "fine. i'm coming with you," he relented.
"if i’m gonna let her out, I need to be there to make sure she stays safe. and that also goes for the both of you–no funny business,” he added while eyeing soda and pony.
sodapop and ponyboy exchanged looks of relief and excitement, happy that darry had finally caved in.
sodapop nudged darry in the side, a teasing tone in his voice. "see? sometimes you have to listen to us. you’re outnumbered."
darry rolled his eyes at sodapop's comment, but he couldn't help the small smirk that tugged at the corners of his mouth.
"yeah, yeah. don't get used to it. this is a one-time thing, got it?" he said, trying to maintain his stern demeanor.
soda and pony both nodded in agreement, too happy about the impending night out to argue further.

darry followed soda out the house in silence as pony went to go fetch you.
darry was still not entirely thrilled about the situation, but he tried to keep his reservations to himself. the thought of letting you out of the house, even with them accompanying you, still made him uneasy.
sodapop noticed the tension in darry’s silence and tried to break the ice as they approached the car. "you're not gonna be a grouch the entire time, are you?" he asked, giving darry a sidelong glance.
sodapop’s tone was teasing but it was also clear he was also being serious.
darry grunted in response, folding his arms across his chest as he leaned against the car.
"I ain't thrilled about this, y'know. but i guess i’m willin’ to do it for her sake," he said gruffly, his eyes fixated on the front door, waiting for you and pony to appear.
sodapop rolled his eyes, knowing all too well of darry's overprotective nature.
darry was hella protective over you whether you liked it or not, you were still his baby sister after all.
"I know, dar. but she's not a baby. she can handle herself, and we're going with her. It'll be fine," he reassured him, “besides, when was the last time you even saw her happy?”
darry's jaw clenched as sodapop mentioned your happiness, knowing he was right.
since the death of their parents, you'd been mostly cooped up in the house studying, rarely leaving except of school.
he couldn't recall the last time he saw you genuinely smile.
"I know, I know. It's just… I worry," darry admitted reluctantly, still trying to keep up a stoic demeanour.
sodapop gave darry a sympathetic pat on the shoulder, understanding his concern.
he knew that the weight of responsibility had fallen heavily upon darry's shoulders since their parents passed. what happened was rough on everyone.
"I get it, dar. but we can't keep her locked up forever," soda reasoned, "she needs to live her life too, y'know."
just then, the front door opened and ponboy emerged with you following close behind.
you weren’t so tidy anymore, putting on whatever clothes as you barely got to tame your hair when pony told her they were going out. you almost thought pony was pulling your leg when he told you.
your eyes, cheeks, and lips were still a miserable shade of crimson as you wore a slightly sad expression on your face.
it was clear that darry’s previous words stung, that you were still upset. as you made your way over, you quietly made your way inside the back of darry’s car.
darry's eyes lingered on your face as you got into the car. he could see the sadness that still lingered on your features, knowing he was the cause of it.
despite his firm stance on your safety, he couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt for shutting you down so harshly earlier.
sodapop slid into the driver's seat, starting the engine as darry took the passenger seat, ponyboy sitting next to you.
the drive to the pasture was mostly silent, save for the soft hum of the radio and the occasional comment from sodapop about the upcoming night's plans.
ponyboy leaned forward from the backseat, a grin spreading on his face. "we brought a blanket, didn’t we? maybe we could have a picnic when we get there" he suggested, his eyes lighting up at the thought.
“but we didn’t bring any food..” you whispered, offering a small smile to your younger brother as you shook your head.
“aha! there’s an in-n-out, hey darry you’re payin!” sodapop grinned, pulling over towards the fast food place as darry stifled a smirk, “of course.”

"alright, we're here," sodapop announced excitedly, getting out of the car. the others followed suit–ponyboy bringing the bags of burgers and fries, you holding everyone’s drinks, and darry bringing the blanket.
as sodapop led them up the hill, darry and him set out the blanket and laid out the burgers, fries, and drinks they bought earlier.
darry couldn't help but watch you and ponyboy as the two of your jumped down on the blanket, laughing to yourselves.
he noticed the way your face brightened as you and ponyboy laughed and joked around, the earlier sadness on your expression fading away.
“hey move it!” sodapop grinned, shooing the two aside as he let out a sigh of satisfaction as he settled onto the picnic blanket, stretching his legs out in front of him.
the four of you sat around the flickering bonfire, the air around you filled with a sense of tranquility.
the night sky above you was slowly filling with twinkling stars, the cool breeze occasionally rustling through the tall grass.
sodapop stabbed a straw into his drink as everyone followed, taking a long sip before he let out a satisfied "ahh.” "this is the life, ain't it?" he said, a content smile on his face.
darry, who had been relatively stoic throughout the night, couldn't help but marvel at the celestial display above, “sure is..”
“I hope we get to do this again sometime soon,” you chimed in.
darry remained quiet, his gaze occasionally shifting between the starry sky and you.
as ponyboy and sodapop emerged themselves into an excited conversation about the bright stars, you tilted your head over to face darry as you gave him a warm smile.
“thanks for lettin me come today.. and sorry for actin like a brat earlier.” you whispered, hoping to make amends.
darry's expression softened as you looked over at him with that sweet smile of yours. though, it softened even more as you apologized.
“no, no, ain’t no need to be sayin’ sorry, little lady. you don't have to thank me either. i was bein’ a hard-ass, you ain’t deserve all that i said.”
“but it ain’t your fault, darry.. i know how hard everything’s been for you and i only made matters worse by actin’ the way that i did.” you whispered, referring to how hard he always worked.
you felt bad for darry, terribly bad even though he was always so hard on you.
darry's chest tightened at your words. he knew he'd been neglecting you, neglecting all of you in a way.
balancing his responsibilities as the eldest sibling and trying to provide for the family had taken its toll on him.
he exhaled deeply, hesitantly raising his hand up to caress the top of your head with his thumb. "you’re too good for me.. I don't think I deserve a sweet kid like you, y'know that?" he muttered, his voice tinged with a mix of affection and a touch of self-deprecation.
he chuckled softly soon after, the sound tinged with a hint of bitterness. "hell, I don't deserve any of y'all."
but you shook your head, continuing to give him a soft smile as he continued to pat your hair, “you deserve all the stars in the frickin’ sky, darry.”
“language,” darry smiled fondly.
