A little late, but reading your take on Enchanted made me remember how much I love that movie. What are your thoughts on the rest of it? Like say, what do the Prince and Nancy represent? What about the villains? I’m curious how they fit into the allegory

Prince Edward is just like Giselle in the sense that he does what people accuse Disney Princes of doing, and it's funny--but it's rewarded by the narrative, because it's actually a good thing.

People think a Disney Prince is just some dumb hunk with no personality, because he's "just there to be the obligatory love interest so the girl can't save herself." But that's a twisted, hollow way to look at it.

Prince Edward is

Active -- he actually does something, not just in his spare time but when faced with a problem or a dilemma. Doesn't matter if it's troll-hunting or braving a strange world to rescue his bride or turning on a dime to fight his own step-mother when she turns out to be evil. He actually acts.

Keeps His Commitments -- When Prince Eric commits to Ariel he commits; jumps in the water to fight a sea-goddess single-handedly. When Prince Charming says he'll give his heart to Snow White but then she disappears, he won't rest till he's found her. When Prince Edward's fiancée disappears, he won't stop searching for her, either.

Genuinely Cares About the Princess -- People act like Princes in Disney movies are just obligatory--they don't actually care about the girl, there's no real tension or getting to know each other or whatever. That's such bull, obviously. In fairy tales, you cram a lot of nuance into a little scene. The Prince meets Snow White singing at a well and promises his heart to her; but it's after he hears her singing about her heart's fondest desires, after he observes that she's surrounded by doves that aren't afraid of her, after he notices she's just a scullery maid; and he still chooses her. Disney appeased everybody by adding in more rom-com moments with later Princes, like Aladdin and the Beast, but truthfully, Princes do what Princesses do; they know what virtues they're looking for in a good soulmate, so they don't need much to recognize it when it crosses their paths. Then they commit. Edward is willing to go on a date with Giselle. When she grows, he's confused, but he'll go with her. She doesn't sing with him anymore but that doesn't mean he ditches her. When she's cursed and be can't wake her he's 100% onboard with Robert doing it--because it doesn't have to be him, he just cares about her.

Has Just As Much Faith As the Princess -- One of the things Princes and Princesses use as the litmus test of whether or not they're soulmates in Disney movies is if they're both believers in the same Idea. Ariel and Eric are the perfect example. They both believe in something that everyone around them thinks is totally crazy. Eric believes in the fated, Right Girl. Ariel believes the Surface World can be worth loving. Those two things get united when they meet each other. Prince Edward longs to find the woman who's his other half, a companion who fits into his heart and makes his life more than just one quest after the other. (And he's so sweet about it.) He's very romantic. Giselle's been dreaming of her true companion, too. They have that in common, that faith that somebody right for them is out there. It just...so happens that that person isn't each other. But they're not wrong that someone is out there, which is why he is rewarded by winding up with Nancy.

Anyway. If Giselle is the Disney movie, so is Prince Edward.

And yeah, he's not quick on the uptake, he's super confident that everything he's doing is right, and he's definitely convinced that Nathaniel actually likes him. But that is okay. Because Edward is uncomplicated. He knows that what he's setting out to do is Right, so what bothers him is never "people here are mean" or "I'm not the hero in this world." Did you notice that? He's never bothered when he finds out he's not the hero. He's only bothered when the idea that Good won't win is threatened.

He's the first one to turn and look at Robert and go "unless...!" excitedly when he realizes his own kiss isn't working. No trace of bitterness. No suspicion. Just eager to solve the problem.

That's why he's great. His confidence came from being the champion of Goodness. Doing the right thing. He doesn't care if he's not the one who wins. He just cares that it's someone Good who's winning.

Then you have Nancy, who is the first of the "normal" people from our world to really give in to the idea of "True Love's Kiss" being a viable solution, right on the spot. Meaning there was space in her brain to believe in it.

I guess if I had to try to distill it, I'd say Nancy is just the reverse-Giselle. In the allegory (it's not all one-to-one) I would say...if Giselle (and to a lesser extent, Edward) is the Disney movie, and Robert is the skeptic, Nancy is us. She's not quite Giselle, not quite Robert...she's someone who wants to believe that the Disney Philosophy is true, but the problem is, nobody in our world believes it or acts like it.

She's looking for a fairy tale but she's stuck in our world. The moments where she's happy with Robert are moments when he's doing something an open-hearted, genuine, selfless and chivalrous Disney Prince would do. The kind of guy who knows who he is and knows what's Good and values Love, so he isn't ashamed or insecure to come right out and declare it.

Gentleness is power, under control. A man in love should have no fear of vulnerability, which again, takes faith—because love isn't about you. It's selfless. Why worry about how telling a girl you love her will make you look, will make you feel? So what if she rejects you; you thought she was worth loving, you gave her that enormous compliment--so what if she doesn't return it? You know who you are. You didn't need her validation--that was never the point of the love-declaration--it was for her. You kindly gave her the world's best compliment, good job, now on to other worthy things. It would've been great if she wanted the same outcome of that love as you did, but she didn't, and that's great too, because it was never that much about you. So you don't have to be hurt, angry, embarrassed, jealous, or any of the anti-love things we associate with bogus unrequited "love."

But in our world, men don't act like that anymore. Because it's all about you. Can't tell the girl how you feel because she might hurt you. How would you be hurt? By finding out she doesn't feel the way you would prefer her to feel about you, by mocking what you've deemed precious, etc. It's all about you, you, you, fear fear fear, etc.

Still, you can tell Nancy thinks she got as close as she could to the fairy-tale guy with Robert because in her first scene, when she finds Robert and Giselle together, she goes on that rant about how she thought he was "sensitive" and "protecting Morgan." Those are the traits she's attracted to; the idea that he wasn't protecting himself, he was protecting his daughter--the idea that he was careful with emotions for other people's sake, not his own--that he cared about emotions at all.

But that's not what it was, it was self-protection, over-planning. Still, the second he's willing to send her flowers or make any kind of heart-on-his sleeve, straightforward gesture of affection, she is SO ready to believe in him again.

She's the grown up who wants to find the Disney fairy tale in "real life" and she's doing the best she can with what she can find. Kinda like a lot of us who grew up on Disney and didn't want to accept the derisive cynical mocking of Disney as we got older, but what could we do?

But good news! It's real! The Good, the Beautiful, the True, exists, and it comes for her.

Then you've got Narissa, the villainess.

She's interesting because she's totally the opposite of everything the movie says is Good. Giselle and Edward wear their hearts on their sleeves—Narissa manipulates people's fondest desires for her own gain. Robert needs to learn to have faith—Narissa believes everybody is out to take what's hers.

Edward gives the gift of love freely, first to Giselle, then, unshaken when she doesn't give him the same, to Nancy—Narissa takes the adoration of people like Nathaniel and treats them like garbage in return.

I also think Pip is important, and it's important that Narissa is defeated by him.

She's brought down by the tiny chipmunk who's been treated with true kindness and friendship by the Princess. The chipmunk who can talk and understand what's going on and be useful, even in a world where people like Robert think there's no such thing. Pip is the unlikely "something wonderful will happen" in our world that Robert didn't believe in. He's the little, fairy tale element that nobody could plan for or calculate or control, coming in to save the day.

How very Disney of him. Ya'll get off of Wish. Disney's tribute to 100 years of fairy tale animation? It has nothing on Enchanted.

WIPs 3 & 8?

Hi Anon @mirrorfalls! Thank you for the ask!

I'd already answered the number 3! But as for the Phantom of Baker Street, it's just a... self-indulgent fic? I guess? It's an SI/OC involved with the Detective Boys in the virtual game world. The kinda catch is that the OC/SI is a deaf character. I've been trying to think of how they would act in the game, how they would interact with the Detective Boys as well as Conan. It's kinda... difficult to decide whether I should have Noah's Ark grant them the ability to, kind of, read what other people say (because, see, it's tech), or just have them... try to understand what the heck other characters are saying. The doc is... mostly blank, I'm afraid to say. I know it's boring. I'm so sorry to disappoint...

(Listen, I just want a deaf OC interact with Conan and the other characters, okay?! T-T)

As an apology, I'll share one more snippet from number 3:

Childhood

“Shi-Shinichi…” Ran whispers so softly, so full of fear that makes Shinichi just freeze, and look down at her. “Let’s go home, okay? Please?”

That voice. He doesn’t want to hear that kind of voice from Ran ever again. Never, until the end of time. This isn’t Ran; her voice should be cheery yet strong. She can be a crybaby— she can cry whenever she needs to. That he can bear. She can even be scared whenever she needs to be.

But that voice… That voice, full of heart-dropping terror, that hand holding her vocal chords and her heart right in its hands, taking away the only thing that matters; her own soul.

She isn’t that. She should more, she is more than that. 

Shinichi doesn’t know why, but he never wants to hear that kind of voice ever again.

4 for the WIP Challenge?

Hello, Marshmallow! Thank you for the ask!

The WIP was just written for a ShinRan Week prompt created a year ago that I'd never touched upon in aaaaages! It was supposed to include a kiss, but I'd needed to, kind of, write about Ran feeling a little sad (maybe even a bit sus) that Conan isn't that cheerful for Ran as much as he usually did. And then the muse refused to tell me anymore scenes aaaaaaaaa! I literally have only two scenes in the draft sobsobsob!

Here's a little snippet! My apologies if it disappoints!

Black Knight and Princess

She stands in the middle of the room, staring idly at her dress. There’s little time to change before her performance, but she can’t help but feel a little despondent. Of course she has rehearsed this play many times, so she knows that she will do her best, seeing as it is her first play in years. She doesn’t want to disappoint the audience, after all. Her dad and Kazuha wished her luck, but the one person she had wanted encouragement from the most… didn’t, for some reason.

She thought he would be most excited for her and would wish her encouragement. Or maybe he would just scoff something about the play, but in a way that would give her courage, she knows, just as he always did before. But today he was a little different. She thought he was acting a little indifferent about her performance. He just said he’ll ‘watch from the audience’ and just… left. Simply that.

His behaviour was a little unusual today.

That’s why she can’t help but feel a little sad still as she stares at her dress.

“－n? Ra－ ou ther－? －arth to R－. Ran! RAN!”

A voice right into her ears snaps her out of her thoughts, making her turn to the right, seeing Sonoko close to her face.

“Ah!” Ran exclaims in surprise, stepping backwards a little. Sonoko simply raises her eyebrow.

“Are you back with me?”

Ran blushes in embarrassment. “Y-yes, I’m sorry. I was lost in thought.”

Sonoko’s eyes narrow a little. “What were you thinking about?”

“Nothing important.”

She stares at Ran for what seems like a long time, before giving out a breath. “Alright, I’ll grill you about it later.”

Ran knows that she will. She doesn’t think she has any choice in that matter, so she just sighs.

“For now, you need to change into your dress. There’s 15 minutes left, and we have work to do in such a short time!” Sonoko pushes gently at Ran’s back towards the dress. “Hurry! We don’t want to be late for the stage!”

She chuckles softly. “Okay, okay, Sonoko! I’ll change now!”

Hi Nymph! Thanks for the ask! my apologies for it being late because life asdfghjkl!

The doc is just… literally short 😭. I wanted to write about Izuku (MHA) who is a few steps closer to snapping upon Katsuki because of his feelings about coughs asshole coughs his dad returning from nowhere. I just don’t have any idea for anything than just Katsuki trying to stop him from killing his sperm donor because they’re heroes. I hadn’t touched upon it for over a year and a half because glares at dialogues and brain asdfghhjkl!

Anyway, here’s all I have on the doc! Sorry if this disappoints you!

“Katsuki.”

Katsuki stops, and stares at Izuku incredulously.

Izuku smiles at him, except that’s not the smile he usually gives his friends. This smile, it’s somewhat terrifying. 

“I love you, really I do, but if you don’t shut up and just let me go, I will throw the table at you.”

Aaaaaaa~! Okay, so! Those two WIPs were written for ShinRan week that I never got to finish for some reason and so were left incomplete for whoever knows how long (it was a year ago, Aina) (shuddup, brain).

'Childhood' was just little Shinichi and Ran going to investigate the rumours at their school, similar to the episode where they first met Kaitou Kid (Touichi). Ran is trying to talk Shinichi out of going there, and he just refuses. Haha, lame isn't it? ^^;

'Vampire' would be Shinichi thinking that Ran is acting strangely and is trying to find out what's wrong with her. Ran is actually a vampire in this XD. ...I need my muse to come back so I can finish this already T-T

Childhood:

“I have a bad feeling about this, Shinichi…!” she exclaims but, upon seeing that Shinichi has ignored her again, she latches onto his arm, preventing him from walking any further. 

“Wha－!”

“We’re not even supposed to sneak out at night! We’ll get in trouble, I’m sure!” Ran yells into his arm.

“We’re already in trouble!” he grumbles, trying to pull his arm out of Ran, to no avail. Her grip is amazingly strong. “They’ve no doubt noticed our absences by now. Why not just use the time to check out the rumours while we’re at it?”

“Then we can go again earlier tomorrow! I just don’t want to go tonight!”

“Well, I don’t think our parents will let us go after tonight, so this is our only chance!” Shinichi pats at Ran’s arm with his free hand repeatedly, urging her to let him go. “Why did you even tag along anyway?”

She doesn’t reply, just clings onto his arm even tighter, if that is even possible. He pauses, feeling her body tremble.

He opens his mouth, hesitates, closes his mouth. Then it opens again. “H-hey, Ran—?”

“Shi-Shinichi…” Ran whispers so softly, so full of fear that makes Shinichi just freeze, and look down at her. “Let’s go home, okay? Please?”

Vampire:

He raises his upper body off the grass by his arms, groaning as he does so. “Thanks, Ran. I owe you one.” Taking the water bottle from Ran, he raises it to his lips and chugs it greedily.

Hmm! Sweet, sweet relief! He’ll never take cold water for granted ever again!

He doesn’t notice Ran staring at the water droplets slipping past his lips, dripping down his throat. But he does hear Ran make a small noise in the back of her throat. She sounds weird, like she’s holding something back.

“Hmm?” Opening his eyes, he dips down his head, letting go of the water bottle and wiping at his mouth with his hand before glancing at Ran, who is staring back at him with a strange look in her eyes. “What’s wrong, Ran?”

Her eyes snap up to his eyes so fast that he would have missed it if he had blinked. 

He actually blinks this time in a bit of a shock, staring at her. Is it him, or did the colours in Ran’s eyes change for a moment? It is too quick to ascertain the colours, but he thinks they may be red. 

Red as blood...

Before he can ask her about it, Ran dips her head down, her bangs hiding her eyes. She opens her mouth, but hesitates before closing it. And then opens and then closes again. And opens again before clenching her teeth together a little.

Shinichi knows that Ran has something to say but has a little trouble saying what is on her mind, so he waits. Even as his throat dries up and his body feels a bit disgusting, what with his sweats making his clothes stick to his skin and all, he still waits patiently. There’s nothing more important than hearing what Ran wants to say to him.

Ran then takes a deep breath before slowly letting it out, her hands clutching onto the rims of her skirt. “Shinichi.”

He hums. “Yeah?”

“Do you trust me?”

“Yes,” he replies with no hesitation. Ran looks a little tense, so he gives a cheeky grin, “Well, except for your sense of directions. You can’t go anywhere without help, anyways.”

Ran chuckles a little. “I do directions just fine on my own, idiot,” she says, her tense shoulders loosening a little.

Success!

“I’ll believe that when I see it.”

“Idiot.”

She takes one more deep breath before saying, “Then can you please stay still for a bit?”

How much would you recommend Wanikani? I want to use it but it's quite expensive. Do you think it's worth it?

Hi anon, thanks for your question! I apologize for my delayed response; I've been away from Tumblr and Japanese studies for some time.

I first made an account on WaniKani in 2016, but I didn't seriously start using it until 2019. My studies got put on the back burner again over the last year, but I'm back on track as I finish level 2 and start unlocking more of level 3.

My progress has been slow because I take my time (and sometimes I don’t learn 5 new items every day). Nonetheless, I have found WaniKani really fun, and especially rewarding when I see the kanji I learn and am able to recognize and/or read them.

How the SRS System in WaniKani Works

After doing a lesson, there are multiple different levels for a given item (i.e. radical, kanji, or vocabulary word) to be in. Depending on where an item’s at determines how long you’ll need to wait before you’ll see it pop up in a review session.

Here are the levels:

Within Apprentice and Guru, there are smaller subdivisions or stages. Apprentice has 4 of these, and Guru has 2. So further expanded, the levels look like this:

Now, there’s a certain amount of time that you have to wait after review sessions in order for a given item to progress from Apprentice 1 to Guru 1.

Lesson done = an item is Apprentice 1

Apprentice 2 is reached after you get it right in a review session 4 hours later.

Apprentice 3 is reached after you get it right in a review session 8 hours after Apprentice 2.

Apprentice 4 is reached if you get it right in a review session 1 day after Apprentice 3.

Guru 1 is reached if you get it right 2 days after Apprentice 4.

There’s three sets of lessons or things to learn: 1) radicals, 2) kanji, and 3) vocabulary. As radicals progress from Apprentice to Guru 1, some kanji are unlocked. As these kanji progress from Apprentice to Guru 1, additional kanji are unlocked. In order to level up, you need to get all the kanji in a given level to Guru. But in order to do this, you need to unlock all the radicals and get those to Guru first.

Getting kanji to Guru also means unlocking vocabulary words that contain those kanji. These new vocabulary words appear as lessons. Although these don’t count towards leveling up, vocabulary words are still important to: 1) reinforce kanji, and 2) learn the other readings of a kanji.

Once you understand what you’re signing up for, make an account and go for it! The first 3 levels are completely free, at which point you can decide if you want to subscribe for access to the remaining 57 levels.

I should also note that there are a TON of ways to customize the WaniKani dashboard (i.e. the home page where you do everything from) using a nifty browser extension called Tampermonkey. So many wonderful users in the WK Community have made userscripts that can help you study more efficiently! (The above progress bar is one of them.) Pros:

The mnemonics work. If a few don’t work for you, you can come up with your own. I also like using Kanji Koohi and searching the WK Forum for reference to see what mnemonics other people have come up with.

The layout and overall design of the website is really great. Everything is organized really well, and it’s also color-coded (pink for kanji, blue for radicals, and purple for vocabulary). The bright colors are also engaging but not blinding.

Example sentences let you practice reading, and see new vocabulary words in context. Recognizing and being able to read kanji from previous levels when you learn new vocabulary words is so satisfying.

Cons:

The lifetime subscription is expensive - but once a year, WaniKani has a lifetime plan sale and cuts the cost by $100, bringing the cost down to $200. I bought it this year to give myself a kick in the pants to continue studying kanji.

There is no built-in notifications system to alert you when reviews are ready - but you can get around this with browser extensions.

While I totally understand being excited about Kate and Yelena (I am too!!!) I haven’t seen nearly enough excitement for the character of Maya Lopez/Echo!

In the comics she is the adoptive daughter of Kingpin. She’s Native American and Deaf. She has the powers to replicate any physical movement after seeing it once. She’s extremely talented in martial arts, acrobatics, dance, and playing the piano.

She’s being played by Alaqua Cox, a deaf Native American actress.

She’s going to have a main role in Hawkeye and is already set to have her own spin-off Disney+ show!
