Depicting a textiles worker, I wanted to focus on the technique of this piece more than anything. When drawing the image onto the canvas I tried not to include too many lines on his face in order to make it more fluid and experimental.
The blue highlights were a nice touch as it contrasts the warmer tones on the rest of the face. The thread acted as curtains that allows the viewer to be on the other side of. It was very effective as I was able to make the peace a more physical one.

This article gives a very detailed insight into the poor living and working conditions of the workers at this factory. Health and safety is not of consideration as the workers are instructed to operate heavy machinery without the right training. Women are often prevented from taking maternity leave, expressing their poor treatment.

Taking my research about the iPhone factories further into my studio practice, I decided to focus on photographs depicting a toy shop in China that has similar ways of deprived it's workers. Long hours and low wages has almost become a trend in factories based in Asia.
The imagery of the toys shows that she has some relation to them as she was the one who made them. It reminds us of the human cost of these products that we consume daily.

I used an older image of a child construction worker to show that the trend of exploitation is very deep rooted within society. In terms of my technique, I am not very satisfied with the facial tones as it lacks deep shades, but the mark making on his face express his hardships.

Moving away from the dark background, I wanted to try something different. Inspired by the Chinese Propaganda posters, I used the colour red in small amounts to create the connection to Karl Marx's ideas of Communism. It also links into the power struggle in factories/work places that are run by huge (popular) companies. The streak of red also has an element of the Pop Art aesthetic, where the colours are often hard to miss. The finger print pattern on the side was the result of a mistake, but playing around with the potential outcome I used it as a way to signify the human effort that goes into producing everyday goods. That effort is often taken advantage of.
The original image depicts child labour which I have previously done research about.

I found the book making workshop very interesting because it was something very new to me. I found out more about the different types of paper that could be used for different purposes. After creating my own, I have a better understanding of what should be taken into consideration when producing a book. The process was difficult at first but enjoyed making it. I am very pleased with the outcome. The yellow fits nicely into the Pop Art theme.

The concept behind this sample is how Coca Cola runs small farming communities dry due to their huge use of their water. I wanted to try something different with a surface I am not familiar with. The aluminium was a good surface to work on top of due to how easily I could blend the colours. However by cutting the top and bottom halves of the can, it became very sharp and hard to handle.

The colours I used are inspired by Chinese Propaganda. The main message behind these posters was about equality between the classes. Given the recent growing knowledge of how Coca Cola deprives villages of their water, both of the ideas contradict each other. The brand is part of pop culture itself, promoted by celebrities and sold in almost every shop around the world.

Yu Youhan
Youhan’s approach to the pop art movement is something that has provided me with a lot of inspiration when it comes to my own studio practice. The themes within his work has given me a better understanding of my own trail of though when it comes to Marxist ideas.

Introduction to Illustrator Workshop
The new skills that I learnt in this workshop has helped me expand my existing understanding of this software. I have gained a better understanding of how resolution works when it comes to formatting my work to fit certain purposes. Colour Theory is something that I was only familiar with when it comes to painting but it is also used in digital images with the help of RGB and CMYK colour models.
The blend option within the software was new to me so it was good to experiment with unfamiliar tools within the Illustrator program. Each of the samples demonstrate my use of the different types of tools, for example, the gradient tool and the pattern tool.

Sound and Audio Art Capturing Workshop
In today's workshop we learnt about features that distinguish sound art from performance art. After looking at how different sound artists create and represent sound, the group was told to illustrate our interpretation of the sounds we could hear within the room.
I chose to represent the sound within a 3 dimensional space, with a cube. The lines represent the different sounds at different times and volumes. The constant buzzing of the monitor is shown through the stright line that runs across the whole cube. This exercise was very useful for viewing sound in a conceptual way.
