To be part of SKAM España has been, for me, the biggest thing, because besides making my dream of being an actress a reality, I’m doing it bringing my struggle to light and representing what has never been done in Spain. Yeah, there have been other Muslim characters on series and movies in Spain, but they’ve never been played by a real life Muslim and hijabi.
Me too, with Hajar Brown
I’m Hajar Brown and I’m a Muslim. I’m a second generation Spaniard. My mother came here in the 90s or so, she went and told her mom, “I’m going to take a walk,” and she showed up in Spain. And my father kinda followed his girlfriend.
Islam gives me many super practical tools for life, it gives me peace and I like hanging out with people, getting to know them, it’s a super beautiful moral code, it teaches me to be more patient.
The first day I wore hijab was a Saturday. On Saturdays, I trained with my best friend in the morning. We hung around places where nobody knew us. So I thought, “it wasn’t all that bad, nothing happened.” Right, the slap in the face came when the next Monday I went to school. People suddenly quit talking to me or gave me a wide berth, obviously there were comments like, “she started wearing it because Ramadan is coming up, she did it because she didn’t wash her hair, she did it because she got married.” So then I said, “After this, everything is better.”
Islamophobia is to assume that Islam or Muslims or anything that looks like either of those two is bad. To a person with such prejudices, I would just say, “Hello, I’m Hajar and nice to meet you.”
It wasn’t until I started university, that is, 4 or 5 years ago, that I started talking about this, because I didn’t know there were other people going through the same thing. Since I became observant everything has become simpler for me, I mean, because it’s not easy to live in a society such as the one I live in, with the circumstances I have.
My life has changed a lot since I started wearing hijab, in many aspects. Obviously, the privileges I had before I started went up in smoke, because now I wear hijab. So then, I have had to adapt to a lot of things and rebuild from zero. Ever since I started wearing it, it seems like I need approval from everyone for everything I do. Like, “why do you wear the hijab?”
I don’t understand why a religion of peace and love, everyone else thinks is the worst and dreadful and terrible and super violent. I guess it’s because of the acts of terrorism committed in our name, and so, but hello? We’re billions of Muslim people telling you it’s the opposite, and there are three or four monsters doing what they do. And you believe them instead of us. So then the problem isn’t Islam, but rather the idea the rest of you have about Muslims. “It’s different, it’s not the same, it scares me.” Rejection.
I think the solution is to listen to what Muslims, the people who live like this every day and who know more about it, say about Islam, and to believe us. Because it’s essential, that we be believed.

Can we please talk about this?
Richie is not even slightly thinking about the damn clown. His whole entire focus is on Eddie and getting him to look at him. He wants to calm Eddie down and help his distressed friend. He even has both of his hands caressing Eddie’s face, and then he moves his hand to try to get Eddie to look at him. Oh my goddd
