Eric hated people seeing him cry as a fully-grown man in his 40s, and in many ways, hated when people offered him comfort just as much. It usually only made him feel even more miserable and pathetic than crying made him feel in the first place.

Still...he knew Shy only had the best intentions. Trusted her, despite his mind's insistence on supplying him with countless what-ifs and disaster scenarios centered on the multitude of potential ways Eric's relationship with her--and Eric's own happiness--could go up in flames.

And it was nice to be able to cry like this and not be told he was either overreacting or being intentionally manipulative for once.

It was still hard for him to speak, but Eric did lean in closer, trying and failing to not audibly sniffle.

"I'm sorry..."

Eric winced, regretting his apology the moment it left his lips.

Hands

Hands can do so much, they’re extremely versatile much like yourself. They can nourish, they can pray, they can comfort. But we both know that’s not what you use yours for is it? You know as well as I do how hands can maim, can strangle, can destroy. They are unthinking and unfeeling, and unlike the others they do not act off instinct but off of command. Every act you commit is purposeful, filled with an intent, sometimes to be cruel and sometimes to be kind. You know who is deserving of your hurt, who is deserving of your love. Always make sure you can tell them apart before you wrap those hands around them.

"I certainly will! Its a very special day for her!! I even managed to find a recipe for hypoallergenic cupcakes after an..." He inhaled, then exhaled in a clearly exhausted sigh, "...incredibly thorough search."

Eric's eyes tended to betray his fatigue more than any other feature on his face, whether that was through the deep bags under them, or the way his pale, freckled skin creased when he smiled, highlighting his laughter lines.

"She'll be so happy to hear you remembered, as well.. Before her, I had no idea a holiday like that even existed!" Eric chuckles, "If only it also meant getting a day off work."

i just had to cut gluten out of my diet entirely after getting diagnosed with celiac disease, and i'm now realizing how impossible it is to eat anything thats not homemade or absurdly expensive under that restriction. so give little claire a hug for me, its rough out here for the fucked up immune system girlies (gender neutral)

"Bloody Hell, that's certainly a diagnosis that will turn your whole life on its head! It's an absolute nightmare having to change such an integral part of your lifestyle like your diet so suddenly, especially when that new diet is treated by the masses as one of those new health and wellness trends to hop onto with no regard as to why that particular diet plan exists in the first place! You don't see people pumping themselves with insulin simply because they read about it in a magazine or saw it on television! ...at least, I hope they don't do that."

"I'll be sure to give Claire an extra hug and kiss on your behalf, absolutely. She'll really appreciate that. I know I do."

"You're adorable and I like you a lot. I get it, though…when you're used to being hurt, and you have that kind of anxiety going on, it's scary to be happy. You think it can't be real, or that it won't last. I trust you, though, and I definitely love spending time with the kids; Claire even had a pretend funeral for Hypoallergenic Dolly with me last week! It's nice getting to be involved with people who are so genuine and caring."

But I trust you as well...and I--" Eric's hesitation is clear, but he continues--perhaps mentally veering off a statement he feels too anxious to say in the moment, "Erm, i'm...trying to remember that the things my mind tells me are true, and what the actual truth is...aren't always the same thing."

Shy doesn't actually like you, you know. She feels sorry that your life is so pathetic and doesn't want you to die of a stroke before your kids grow up. She'd probably end up with them, considering what a flake their mother is

Eric's breath hitches, that does seem to sting him quite a bit. His mortality and the wellbeing of his family was a very big sore spot on a long, long list of sore spots.

He could simply ignore the errant thought, but decides instead to entertain it, contest it.

"Shy does like me. Even if she feels sorry for me, there's something else keeping her around besides pity, because I know for a fact there's only so long you can stay with someone out of pity before you give up entirely.

Even if she truly is simply putting up with me, I know that she loves and cares for my children as if they were her own.

Whe-- If something were to happen to me... I hope-- I know that she would help Maria take care of them."
