Hypnotherapy
As I found out, hypnotherapy isn’t about being made to make chicken noises, or paying someone to sleep for an hour or so.
Where It Began
At the beginning of this year I wasn’t in a great place. To start with, I don’t do well in winter anyhow; what with the lack of sunlight, the cold weather, and the pressure of all the Christmas festivities. I always felt like I ought to be happy and smiley when…

Sorry, it's been a while... Is it safe to come out of hiding?
Sorry, it’s been a while… Is it safe to come out of hiding?
Hi everyone,
I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to do another post. A lot of things have happened and I’ve neglected the website recently. I want to share what’s been going on but it’s going to take me a little time to get the words out of my head and written down.
I’ve been meaning to do a post for a while now, and after noticing that someone shared the Finding Our Voices website on the SMIRA…

Stuck In Mute
I was just going through some of the older magazines and thought I’d start sharing some of the articles on here as it’s the awareness month for selective mutism. Here’s one from the 5th issue of the magazine about the short film Stuck In Mute – an interview I did with the writer/director Shane Meuwissen, and Katie Kleiger who plays Robin, the girl with SM.

31 things about my SM
31 things about my SM
For the October awareness month I’ll be sharing 31 things about my SM – one for each day. Here’s the 31 things I’ll be posting about, feel free to join in!
To me, SM is:
I was diagnosed with it in the year:
But I had symptoms of it since:
Most people assume:
But actually the truth is:
The biggest adjustment I’ve had to make is:
The hardest part about mornings are:
Something I couldn’t live…

Why don't you talk?
Why don’t you talk?
When I was at school, people would ask me why I didn’t talk. Over and over again they’d ask me the same questions, and every time I’d just sit there and wish for the school day to end so that I could go back to being me because I didn’t recognise the person I was at school. They wanted answers that I didn’t have. I wanted to run away but I was surrounded by people who didn’t understand. I didn’t…

Meet-ups and Giant Cookies
Meet-ups and Giant Cookies
This weekend just gone, I met up with a group of amazing people who have (or had) SM, and it was the best weekend I’ve had in a long time. I drove to places I hadn’t ventured to before, and even though I still panicked, I didn’t get too lost and there weren’t any major catastrophes (although I did get poo’d on by a seagull, but that’s meant to be good luck).
It was a really odd feeling being…

#timetotalk
‘Talking’ isn’t the only way to communicate. In fact, I think it’s very over-rated. It’s believed that much more than half of all communication is non-verbal; body language, gestures, facial expression and the written word are often more useful for communication than simple words which can be taken the wrong way or misunderstood. So, for Time To Talk day, I’ll be writing instead.
  When I was…

Crowds + No Eggs = Panic (Apparently)
Crowds + No Eggs = Panic (Apparently)
I don’t understand my mind at the best of times but there’s still the odd occasion when it manages to surprise me.
Last weekend I went to a car show with my other half. We got there early so we managed to walk around and look at all the stalls before it got too busy, which was definitely a good idea because as the time crept up to midday it started to get crowded. There were people everywhere;…

Happy Christmas To You All! I know Christmas can be difficult for some of us. All the extra social gatherings, the expectations, the stress about getting the right present for the right person, spending the right amount of money and, if you order gifts from the internet, hoping they arrive before Christmas!

Over To You.. Q&A Section
Over To You.. Q&A Section
I’m in the process of setting up a new page on the website called Over To You. The main thing I’m hoping to do is to have a Question & Answer section where anyone can message or email me a question about SM and I will post it (anonymously) on the Finding Our Voices Facebook group for everyone to respond with their advice and tips. Then I’ll add the question and answers to the website in the hope…
