Migration Matters from California Trout on Vimeo.
Salmon swim anywhere from hundreds to thousands of miles in their journey from river to ocean and back again. Not all fish perform this daring feat. The fish that do migrate from river to ocean and back—like steelhead and coho and Chinook salmon—are called “anadromous.” Watch this video to learn more about the incredible lifecycles of anadromous fish as they move from river to estuary to ocean and back again!
These fish have been honing their ability to survive this epic journey for the past 6-10 million years, but in just the last 100 years, humans have drastically reduced their populations and chances of survival. Now, groups like California Trout are working round the clock to understand these complex migratory patterns so that we can better protect these amazing animals. With scientific monitoring projects all over the state, we’re closer than ever to seeing the bigger picture, which means every restoration effort can have a larger, more long-lasting impact.

Olympic Peninsula: Restoring Rainforest Rivers from Trout Unlimited on Vimeo.
On the wild coastal rivers of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, Trout Unlimited is removing migration barriers, reconnecting floodplains and restoring critical spawning and rearing habitat for struggling populations of wild salmon and steelhead.
Building on top of state and private funding, extensive federal investments provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) are allowing TU to expand the scale and impact of our restoration work in the coming years. For anglers and coastal tribes, this work is critical to rebuilding wild steelhead and salmon runs. For local communities, these investments mean good jobs and durable road systems designed to withstand the impacts of climate change.
In our new film, join TU’s Luke Kelly as he travels along iconic rainforest rivers visiting our partners and projects to celebrate the incredible restoration and reconnection work underway on the Olympic Peninsula.

Swing North-Fly-Fishing for Winter Steelhead from Mikey Wier on Vimeo.
Hidden behind deep gray fog, California’s North Coast is one of the most pristine habitats in the state. But the thick redwood forests and slate green rivers were almost devastated by the impact of industry. Once hosting runs of more than a million salmon and steelhead, the annual fish counts on the Eel River now often number less than 1,000. Yet, the salmonids persist. In recent years, signs of a recovery ripple through the waters. In Swing North, fishermen Mikey Wier and Jason Hartwick hook into the growing population of wild winter run steelhead on the Eel. With appearances by Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia and Shane Anderson, director of Wild Reverence: The Wild Steelheads’ Last Stand, the two discover a river that holds hope for one of California’s great remaining wild fisheries.
The full movie will be featured in the 2014 International Fly Fishing Film Festival (IF4).

steelhead santa cruz from columbus leth on Vimeo.
Pursuing steelhead on their freshwater spawning run in the Pacific Northwest is a well-documented obsession for many fly anglers. Today, in this intriguing venue, anglers have the unique opportunity to fish for Atlantic steelhead in the austral autumn under the warm Argentine sun.
To fish steelhead on Rio Santa Cruz calls for patience, a boat, and a knowledgeable fishing guide. It’s widely accepted that steelhead are “fish of a thousand casts.” Santa Cruz steelhead are no exception. But a growing and under-the-radar population of sea trout in the Santa Cruz will interrupt your steelhead concentration on daily basis. During our test fishing in 2023, we caught several trophy fish — steelhead and sea trout — up to 19 pounds.
