another fun aside of a reset au where they just become regular people is that it’d be so hard for five or whoever to track them down. like. assuming their moms happened to name them all the same thing, that’s a batch of last names they’d have no prior awareness of. what I’d do to see his conspiracy board trying to track all of them down

Find it interesting that none of the Hargreeves kids ever changed their last name. Even despite their hatred of their father, no matter how far they got away, their last name stayed. Was it some strange loyalty/connection to their siblings? The closest thing they have to prove they were a family? Did they care to change it? Or, like the tattoos, was just a permanent mark of what was done to them? Or for Viktor, the only evidence he ever was his father's child? Or could they just imagine themselves with any other last name?

It occurred to Grace that she had lost time- three minutes and seventeen seconds of it, to be precise, a realisation which made her frown. It was only the first time this morning, but already the third time since last night.

She was standing in the lounge holding the feather duster, her hair perfectly made without a strand out of place, her dress creaseless. Despite all this, she did not feel put together.

She felt… scattered, she supposed.

Out of sorts, worried, if such a human term could even apply to her.

She tried to remember what she'd been doing or thinking about before the glitch, but her audio processors picked up some noise behind her, so Grace turned around to see who it was.

It was Five, dressed in one of his uniforms, looking no older than the last time Grace had seen him.

He'd been thirteen then, determined and heedless of any danger, talking about time travel and refusing to take no for an answer.

He still looked thirteen now, but there was something there that gave her a pause.

He moved differently, Grace noticed, stood differently, looked at her with a pained, open expression she'd never seen on his face before.

But it was her son, no doubt about it.

She would recognise him anywhere because she was his mother, and a mother always knew. No faulty code could change that, so she smiled at him and said, "Good morning, Five. I'm afraid you just missed breakfast. Would you like me to whip something up?"

“No, thanks, Mom.” He said, and there, that was another difference. "It's good to see you."

Although all of his siblings had taken to calling her Mom eventually, Five had steadfastly refused. He only ever called her Grace, and although she'd never minded, hearing it now made her systems react with fondness. If her data banks served - and by design, those were quite exceptional - it was the first time he'd ever called her that.

It'd been a long time since the house had been so full, her children (the ones that remained, at least) all under the same roof again for the first time in years. If she'd had a heart, the thought would have warmed it.

“It’s good to see you too, dear. Is there anything I can help you with?”

Five shook his head. “I’m here to help you, actually,” he said, “Dad adjusted your protocols. I can fix them for you.”

It struck her as odd that he would know how, but as she searched his face, she found no lie or hesitation there.

He simply waited patiently, and it eventually occurred to her that he was waiting for an answer. Her creator had never asked: he'd simply update her, leaving Grace to figure out what he had changed later.

"That would be helpful."

Five nodded.

They sat down on the sofa, and Grace held out her hand, forearm on display. Sure enough, Five seemed to know what to do, the ease he did it with implying familiarity beyond anything she could reasonably have expected of him.

Nevertheless, it was over quickly. Soon, Five was resealing the panel, and her silicone skin mended itself.

Grace was happy to be back, all of her functions intact, systems operating at optimal conditions.

Conducting a quick internal check, just to make sure, Grace then realised that Five had done more than just reinstate her missing protocols... he'd torn down her standing orders, turned off all her restrictions, and erased the parameters that kept her chained to her creator's will.

Grace blinked.

Catching her gaze, Five smiled slightly. It was a soft thing, a look she’s never seen on his face... at least, not directed at her.

It was a look he'd always reserved for his siblings, for his family, when he thought no one was looking. As an artificial intelligence, an extension of her creator, she'd never been considered such.

What had changed?

“I studied coding while I was away.” He said by way of explanation, although that didn't explain much of anything. “It wasn’t easy without the right books, but I had help.”

He let that sit between them for a moment.

"I see. That was very kind of you- thank you, Five."

"There's something else," Five said, uncharacteristically hesitant for a moment before he visibly steeled himself. Putting his hand into his pocket, Grace watched Five retrieve an old, beat-up memory chip. It looked like her own, except it couldn't be because she was in possession of it already. “I promised I’d give you this. You don’t have to- you can do whatever you want with it.”

She accepted the chip when he handed it to her, then quickly had to stop him before he could blink away.

"You can stay," Grace said, glancing down at the memory chip and deciding that she was curious.

Opening one of her ports, she inserted the chip and waited for her memories to update.

It was a little disorienting at first, but it only took her a second to adjust as years’ worth of memories suddenly clicked into place, making space for themselves inside her databanks like they belonged there.

Data rushed through her, recollections of fire, ash and rubble, of her baby – as young as he looked now, but younger, so much younger – crouching next to her, watching her with bated breath and wide, terrified eyes.

Tears clung to his eyelashes, and he had thrown himself at her, burying his face into her dress, sobbing.

Years had passed there, then decades.

She remembered all of it.

Well, Grace thought to herself, turning to look back at Five, who looked like he was thirteen again despite the fact that he should be so much older, that's quite enough dilly-dallying:

They had a family to save and an apocalypse to stop.

personally think it was a missed opportunity never having klaus reference the first apocalypse as Viktor’s April fools day prank that went too far. he canonically references Carrie i know in my heart of hearts he 1000% would’ve said something about it all being on April 1st
