The kitten’s tiny eyes, green as a forest canopy, stared up at Zuko unblinkingly, intently. The small creature seemed perfectly content to stay curled up in his arms, paws gently kneading his forearm and the world’s smallest purr rumbling from its throat. Zuko had to admit, the thing was adorable, nothing but a ball of tufty orange fur that fit in the palm of his hand. When he’d found it in the box in the alley, alone and crying, it had been almost impossible to just leave it there. And so he’d scooped it up and taken it along with him, a decision he somewhat regretted now as he sat on the park bench, unsure of what to do with the little tabby.
It was only when the kitten’s ears perked and swiveled, head turning to look at the girl standing a few feet away, that Zuko even noticed her arrival. Looking up, golden eyes met caramel ones as Zuko fixed his gaze on the girl, noticing just how intently she seemed to be staring at the small fuzzball curled against his chest. Shifting his arms carefully, Zuko gently lifted the kitten up, offering it to the girl.
❝ Did you, uh, want to hold her? ❞

Zuko had to admit, the last thing he expected to happen when he walked into the small corner book store was to get hit in the head with a 10-pound, leather-wrapped book that looked like it might crumble if touched wrong. But, nevertheless, the book seemed determined to slip off the shelf above the firebender, plummeting almost two feet through the air before the front cover connecting solidly with the top of his head with a loud thunk. Staggering, Zuko almost stumbled right to the ground, only catching himself at the last minute on the shelf next to him, fingers gripping the cool wood like a lifeline.
Preoccupied as he was with staying upright, and the bump blossoming on his skull, Zuko barely even noticed the way the book bounced several feet away, finally coming to rest before a young man that couldn’t be much older than Zuko himself. Really, that hurt.

“Ah—- No, I haven’t yet.”
Her gaze moves, admiring how neat and unique the house was. While it differed from her small dorm room and tiny apartment, it wasn’t entirely uncomfortable. Having two floors, it made sense why she had to be housed with four people. Zuko seemed like a courteous individual, so she had no complaints against their arrangement.
She then remembers that their kitchen was quite stocked with food and drinks alike. Uraraka figured that making some tea would help ease her nerves, and perhaps be a kind gesture to prepare for her new housemate. Looking back at him, she speaks once more.
“U-Um! I think I saw a tea box in the kitchen. Would you like some tea, Zuko?”
Taking a tentative step farther into the house, Zuko forced his shoulders to loosen a bit even as he took a deep breath, air sucked carefully in through his nose and slowly let out through his mouth. The girl before him was clearly no threat, and though he was still filled with a wary caution, Zuko couldn’t deny that the house did look comfortable, and welcoming. It was well furnished, and seemed cozy enough.
It was Uraraka’s offer of tea that really set Zuko at ease, however, the suggestion bringing memories of a steaming cup jasmine tea held gently in his uncle’s hand. It made a faint smile touch the edge of the prince’s mouth as he nodded gently.
❝ Tea sounds nice. Thank you. ❞
#umm wtf!! you and ochako are the absolute sweetest here!!#also shrek is the cryptid of the house#we will never meet him SHSGD#&&URARAKA.01#risingquirk

HOW MANY TIMES WOULD THIS happen? even now he could feel his irritation begin to rise at the accusation, that he had stolen something from the convenience store he had found himself in to get something to drink. minding his own business in the corner, it was bound to happen, though without any substantial proof and claims that the cameras were down at the moment to attest his claim. leaving it only between the employee and himself, voice raised in protest at the unfair treatment.
❝ And I’M telling you that I didn’t steal anything! Are you even listening? Look, that guy has been here the whole time, too. He’ll tell you the same thing I just did. ❞ pointing over toward the random bystander, he only hopes the other wouldn’t mind stepping in to help, let alone if he had even been paying attention. totally dragging in someone who was minding their own business, at that. classic.

Truth be told, Zuko had barely even noticed the argument taking place a few aisles down from him. He was too preoccupied with his own problems, like why the two nearly identical boxes of tea he held in each hand were ten whole stars apart in price. Frowning, he was about to put the more expensive of the two boxes back on the shelf when the angry pair, who appeared to be the store clerk and another customer, turned their attention to him, the younger of them calling out to Zuko himself and making the firebender fumble with the boxes in his hands.
❝ Oh, uh. ❞ He barely knew what they were arguing about, nevertheless what they expected from him. ❝ Sure, I guess...? ❞ Less than a picture of confidence, the Fire Prince could only stand there awkwardly, tea still in hand, as the store clerk seemed to scrutinize him with small, beady eyes.

If there was something about living in Radiale that surprised Zuko the most, it was how comfortable he had become living in the two-story house in Fibonacci Ward. His roommates were often scarce, beyond the kind-faced girl who had greeted him when they’d both moved in, and the house was usually quiet and peaceful. Zuko could come and go as he pleased, and though his room was strange compared to what he was used to, it was clean and cozy and private. The relative stillness of the home made it easy to fall into a routine, and lulled Zuko into a sense of security he had not felt in years.
And so when he padded down the stairs one afternoon, the prince was startled to find a stranger standing in the family room, appearing to be alone. For a moment, Zuko paused, surprise written across his expression. It was only when the boy turned towards him, face falling out of the shadows, that an electric shock went through the firebender, eyes widening a fraction of an inch. The burn scar that splayed across the left side of the other’s face was eerily similar to Zuko’s own, and immediately made a queasy sort of feeling development in his stomach.
❝ Can I help you? ❞ His voice, carefully neutral, gave away nothing, though Zuko had to fight a small part of himself that wanted to reach up and touch his own scar in response.
