your version of helen is way better than what we get in the show! i despise her in the show and how she treats tim. thank you for humanizing her just a little bit with your art. im curious about how in the tags of the helen art post you mentioned she has a backstory provided in her trading card?

Here it is! Helen Lovejoy's semi-official backstory as per the Simpsons Mania trading card collection.

The thing about Helen is that I think the main issue that's getting her snagged in terms of likability is that the show doesn't provide us little if any humanizing or endearing traits towards her, she's mainly characterized by her proximity to Marge and Tim's characters and her treatment of those two in particular.

We see that Tim is very negligent of Helen's needs in favor of his model trains but we never really get Helen trying to cope with it outside of her immediate response to that negligence, and we don't really see why it is that Helen targets Marge with her gossip and petty criticisms specifically, atleast not in the way we see the Why when it comes to Homer's petty feelings towards Ned.

The show has a bit of a problem when it comes to its female characters in that they don't heavily characterize them the way they characterize their male counterparts and it's really disappointing because not only does Helen (and other main-stay female characters like her) have the potential to be interesting, she also has the potential to have really fun episodes centered around her own shenanigans! They could do alot of plot stuff with her being a gossip or the wife of a religious man, she could dig so many holes for herself with those two traits alone!!

Make her spread a petty rumor that forces her to pile lies upon lies to keep up her innocence, for example! Alot of conservative protestant moms tend to write biographies or advice books or online courses that bring concerning questions about their personal lives at best, she could join that grift and give us backstory in the process! She's a mom activist who's willing to lead torch and pitchfork mobs against an issue, maybe make her start a riot and then regret it later so she tries to stop it! Or hell, give us a Helen and Marge episode where they're forced to actually work together on something, those are always fun!

The show can genuinely do so much with her and it's so upsetting to see them squander that potential for whatever reason.. I really really do like her being just a petty little lady but I see that that's far from enough to make other people like her and it's really sad to see...... She can be so much more if they let her.
