This guy, Tomoaki Araide, only appears in 29 manga chapters total, and as far as I'm aware hasn't been seen since.
Seeing him interact with Conan here makes me wish he'd stuck around, purely because of how fun it would have been to have an adult (he's 25) who is aware of the Black Organisation/FBI things going on but who isn't part of it, and who does Not know about Conan=Shinichi, just... being part of the plot.
The idea of this guy who's totally out of his depth, but who's willing and wants to help, would have been such a fun foil to characters like Hattori (in the deep end, knows about him being Shinichi) and the full on FBI and double agents that're all over the place, as well as being someone who'd probably listen to Conan who isn't Hattori, another detective, or a member of the Police.
Just imagining him helping out in cases and someone asks him "why are you doing that?" and Araide just goes "[The kid] told me to do it, and I didn't see any reason why not?"

Sigh. Having a normal amount of feelings about the fact that Araide doesn't really know any of these kids and yet all they do is praise and thank him, and consistently predict/assess his behavior based on their past experiences with Vermouth-as-Araide. Definitely not thinking about Jodie's opinion re: Vermouth being such a good actress that she basically managed to replicate Araide's nature 1:1 to the point that apart from him suddenly not "remembering" the students as well as he should he likely managed to reinsert himself into Teitan's environment without a hitch

Damn.
Like, you can sorta predict who's going to be used as the Sleeping Detective in any given case based purely on who's present; if Sonoko is there, but there aren't any police and Kogoro's out of the picture then she's gonna be the one.
I do wish Shinichi didn't rely on it for his deduction shows so much, though - I'd love to see characters actually getting some development in where they follow his lead instead of only getting to be his mouthpiece.
Like... a lot could be done with an AU where Araide figures out the "Sleeping Detective" trick just by being present one or two more times.
He has to have Sonoko "slap" his hands away, so the Qualified Doctor doesn't go "uh, guys? she's actually asleep. this voice isn't her."

This... fascinates me?
Because Vermouth either truly did become the mask as Jodie suggests she did, or... she has her "Vermouth" side, and the side she has when not involved in Organisation business. A sort of "who are you in the dark, when you are being pressured to neither harm nor hurt?"
What Araide is, I think, noticing, is that these people are all seeing how Vermouth, his impersonator, could have acted as a "kind and caring" doctor without showing the sheer amount anxious attention to "his" patients that she does.
I'm reminded of Shinichi's words in New York - "I don't know what sort of reason one would have for killing someone, but does there need to be a reason to save someone?"
Jodie, however... I do think that Araide could have done with asking his question to almost anyone else. Jodie herself is too close to not be biased. She's emotionally compromised by the trauma of Vermouth killing her father and trying to kill her twenty years ago, and then not all that long ago seeing the woman again and being shot. As Vermouth tries to kill two (supposed, and in Jodie's eyes) kids.
What's more, I think that Araide's comments should have been taken into consideration; we know as readers that Vermouth doesn't want to hurt Ran and would prefer not to kill Shinichi if she doesn't have to; they're the two people who've shown her any sort of "grace" in her life, and we don't know what kind of effect that had on her.
If the FBI knew about the fact that she could have a kind streak, then hey, maybe they could use that or at least add it to her profile. Y'know. It'd be useful, maybe.
