Take My Hand Analysis

There's no official lyric translation as of now so this post will be primarily working off of @/WhaleSaph's translation with minor edits.

Overall, Take My Hand is pretty straightforward but I find particular interest in the three distinct identities that appear:

1) "I" or Hyuna

2) "You" or who Hyuna is addressing

3) "My lord" or God / the Great Anakt

First thing's first: "You" does not refer to Luka. Or at least, not just Luka.

A child born within despair Fated to be trampled on We are fierce, you and I

"A child born within despair" at first glance seems to call back to Arise and Walk where Hyuna faces the child Luka and calls him "a pitiful soul [...] who only knows suffering."

But considering the following lyrics: "We are fierce, you and I" that line is likely actually "A child Children born within despair."

In other words, all of them are children who are/have the potential to be fierce due to their fate of being born into a world that won't hesitate to trample on them.

Luka is far from the only child "born into despair" in Alnst...

...and of all characters Hyuna, explicitly known to care deeply about everyone around her, wouldn't ignore that.

So considering her character themes and how generalized the lyrics are, it's far more likely that Take My Hand addresses any and every pet-human listening, aka "you."

Note that we already know the very specific wishes and hopes Hyuna wants for Luka from the Wiege monologue and the Arise and Walk comic. Both of the aforementioned pieces explore Luka's internal conflict with himself.

In contrast, Take My Hand explores Hyuna and the listener's external conflict with their oppressor(s).

'Cause I stand This song resonating through the burning lies

Take my hand Don't sit there and cry All the pain will pass We will take back all of that lost time

The same oppressors who have told them "burning lies," caused them "pain," and taken away their "time" — the segyein.

Take my hand Even if you lose, don't give up I'm biting down the fear We're opening a new era

It is exactly in opposition to all of this that the human rebellion seeks to "open a new era" and bring about change.

Now that "I" and "you" have been covered, what remains is "my lord."

There's a surprising amount of new context regarding Hyuna and her relationship with faith/the Great Anakt.

We've already seen Hyuna respectfully pray to the Great Anakt, and now this is joined by her confession of having once prayed to a diety for salvation:

I prayed for the ladder of salvation to come down I asked for a miracle without realizing The world is broken and shattered Oh my lord I'm hanging on to a rotten rope

"The ladder of salvation" / "a rotten rope" — Though the first reference that comes to mind is the story of The Spider's Thread where Buddha lowered a spider's thread into hell as an act of salvation which ultimately failed due to human selfishness, these lyrics are more likely a reference to the Korean fable "The Sun and the Moon" (as proposed by @/twifairycosplay).

[Brief summary]

A pair of siblings was chased by a tiger and prayed to God: "If you want us to live, please hand down a rope."

A rope came down and the children escaped. The tiger also prayed to God: "If you want me to catch them, please hand down a rope."

A rope came down and the tiger fell trying to climb it because it was rotten.

*As with all fables, the details and wording change with each retelling, so the message behind Hyuna's rotten rope can change depending on which version you follow.

With this specific context:

Hyuna had once prayed to the Great Anakt for rope/salvation...

("If you want us to live, please hand down a rope.")

...Only to see that the rope she climbed, the one "God" had given her, was a rotten one.

In hindsight she saw how foolish that prayer was. Her very request was equivalent to asking for a miracle because the world (for humans) has long since been broken (damned) and their "God" will only ever send down rotten ropes to them.

After that, the faith Hyuna held changed. Hyuna turned to despise the "God" they've been raised to worship.

She came to identify herself as a "sinner" and a "devil," both words with religious connotations for she is now working against "God."

You can make a silver bullet but you can't stop me

I hate you every day, every night Don't ever say you love me It's chilling, the truth

"Don't ever say you love me" — Because what is it that worshippers are told? That their god loves them, cares for them, is watching over them and will protect them.

"It's chilling, the truth" — To be told the Great Anakt loves her is chilling because she is now aware of the frightening truth: the "God" they've been raised to trust and love and respect only see them as swine for slaughter, mere petty entertainment.

When you call my name it makes me stronger I'm facing you at the end of the world

"When you call my name it makes me stronger" — The piles upon piles of wanted posters and warning signs with her name and face pasted all over it.

"I'm facing you at the end of the world" — She will confront "God" to end this world and bring about the new age.

(I understand why it's easy to assume these lines are referring to Luka but the amount of evidence against that could make a whole new post. The biggest reason of which is this: if this stanza is about Luka, that would imply Luka is the enemy they must "take her hand" and stand up to defeat. And in the context of the entire song, those lines being about Luka would be wildly out of place.

In summary, Take My Hand is about pet humans and the hopelessness they face in a world wholly against them, but also about the innate strength that exists inside them still. It is about not despairing, to keep going despite everything.

This is a song for the weak, the oppressed, the suffering.

But I think Hyuna would also mean it for anyone able to draw strength from it... including us.

All characters i chose from crk to be placed in place of alnst characters might not match perfectly, but i had wanted to have mainly pv, white lily, and smilks in this au so i chose others to suite those three
